4:00
a reading from The Acts of the Apostles
4:04
the apostles and presbyters in agreement
4:07
with the whole church decided to choose
4:11
representatives and to send them to
4:14
Antioch with Paul and Barnabas
4:18
the chosen ones were Judas who was
4:21
called barsavas and Silas leader among
4:25
the brothers
4:27
this is the letter delivered by them
4:31
the apostles and the presbyters your
4:35
brothers
4:36
to the brothers in Antioch Syria
4:40
cilicia
4:42
of Gentile origin greetings
4:46
since we have heard that some of our
4:48
number who went out without any mandate
4:51
from us
4:52
have upset you with their teachings and
4:56
disturb your peace of mind
4:59
we have with one Accord
5:02
decided to choose representatives and to
5:06
send them to you along with our beloved
5:11
Barnabas and Paul
5:13
who have dedicated their lives to to the
5:18
name of our Lord Jesus Christ
5:21
so we are sending Judas and solace who
5:25
will also convey this same message by
5:28
Word of Mouth
5:30
it is the decision of the Holy Spirit
5:33
and of us not to place on you any burden
5:39
Beyond those necessities
5:43
namely
5:44
to abstain from meat sacrificed to idols
5:50
from blood
5:52
from Meats of strangled animals
5:56
and from unlawful marriage
6:00
if you keep free of these you will be
6:04
doing what is right
6:06
farewell
6:08
and so they were sent on their Journey
6:11
upon their arrival in Antioch they
6:15
called the assembly together and
6:18
delivered the letter
6:20
when the people read it they were
6:23
delighted with the exhortation
6:28
the word of the Lord thanks be to God
6:33
I will give you thanks among the peoples
6:36
O Lord
6:38
I will give you thanks among the peoples
6:41
O Lord
6:42

6:46

6:52

6:59

7:06
peoples O Lord I will chant your praise
7:09

7:11

7:14

7:17

all the Earth Be Your Glory
7:25
I will give you thanks among the peoples
7:28
oh God
7:46
and the Lord be with you
7:48
a reading from the holy Gospel According
7:51
to Saint John
7:54
said to his disciples this is my
7:57
commandment love one another as I love
8:01
you no one has greater love than this to
8:04
lay down one's life for one's friends
8:07
you are my friends if you do what I
8:10
command you I no longer call you slaves
8:13
because a slave does not know what his
8:15
master is doing
8:16
I have called you friends because I have
8:19
told you everything I have heard from my
8:21
father
8:22
it was not you who chose me but I who
8:25
chose you and appointed you to go and
8:28
bear fruit that will remain so that
8:30
whatever you ask the father in my name
8:32
he may give you
8:34
this I command you love one another
8:38
the gospel of the Lord
8:43
it's always an incredibly refreshing and
8:46
helpful reminder when in Christianity we
8:49
Define something radically differently
8:52
than the way other people Define it it's
8:54
one of those incredibly important things
8:56
where when people kind of use a
8:58
theological term in its casual sense
9:01
Christianity doesn't make sense and here
9:03
we have an incredibly important one
9:05
where Saint John says listen I want you
9:07
to understand first and foremost that
9:09
love is to be seen in service and
9:13
sacrifice right the highest form of love
9:15
is to lay down one's life for one's
9:18
friends this is heroic love and in fact
9:21
Saint Paul was going to kind of tweak it
9:23
in the very slightest sense by reminding
9:25
us that while we were still sinners
9:27
Christ laid down his life for us and so
9:30
he doesn't just lay down his life for
9:32
his friends but he lays down his life
9:34
for all of us but the best that we can
9:37
hope to do as Saint John makes queers to
9:38
lay down our life for our friends and to
9:41
sacrifice and so our Lord ties love very
9:44
very closely to the idea of
9:47
self-sacrifice the second place though
9:49
that really can start to become
9:51
important is that the Lord says here
9:54
specifically I do not call you slaves
9:58
but the reason I don't call you slaves
10:01
is not that you don't do exactly what I
10:03
tell you to do
10:04
it's that I you are not slaves because I
10:07
am letting you know what's going on I'm
10:09
giving you the reason I'm giving you an
10:11
understanding if you want to understand
10:13
then you can understand and I have
10:16
explained it to you but that in no way
10:18
says you don't have to do it the friend
10:21
is still the person who does what Jesus
10:24
tells them to do the friends simply
10:27
understands why it is that he or she
10:30
does it and the slave does not
10:33
understand but if we look in the modern
10:36
world
10:37
and we think about the way the modern
10:38
world considers obedience anytime
10:41
someone does what someone else asks them
10:44
to do unless it's because they're
10:47
offended then that person is a slave
10:50
that person is not thinking for
10:52
themselves in a short form that person
10:54
is not self-serving in the modern notion
10:57
but our Lord remember tells us that love
10:59
and obedience and sacrifice are all tied
11:04
together they're all aspects of the same
11:06
thing and so if we are going to love the
11:09
Lord then we need to obey him and if we
11:11
are going to obey him that's going to
11:13
demand a certain amount of
11:15
self-sacrifice from us but our Lord is
11:17
not telling us to Simply do that as a
11:20
slave he's going to tell us why he's
11:22
going to give us the reason that it is
11:24
detrimental for us to laugh at jokes at
11:27
other people's expense or the reason
11:28
it's bad to gossip with people or the
11:30
reason that it's it's bad to be lustful
11:33
or to steal or to lie or whatever he's
11:36
given us the reason for for that but
11:38
ultimately we are still expected to obey
11:41
him and I think it's incredibly
11:42
important that we realize this is not
11:45
something that our modern world has the
11:47
right simply to redefine we as
11:50
Christians are obliged to love the Lord
11:53
and in debt to to obey his commands not
11:57
as slaves in the sense of we don't know
12:00
why it is the Lord asks us to do this
12:02
but as friends in the sense that we
12:04
still do what he said but we have a
12:06
sense of why and I think we have to be
12:09
very very deliberate because in the
12:10
modern world of course we have these
12:12
competing ideas these competing
12:14
definitions in the modern world love is
12:16
self-serving service is self-serving
12:19
obedience is self-serving everything
12:22
frankly in the modern world is
12:24
self-serving all that matters is me and
12:28
my experience and my happiness and my uh
12:30
you know oppression and my uh outrage
12:34
and all that kind of that's the only
12:35
thing that is defined as important in
12:36
the the modern world but as Christians
12:39
we reject outright that way of seeing
12:42
things and as Christians we say I will
12:44
do my very best to obey the Lord because
12:47
I love him because the Lord has chosen
12:49
me as his friend that doesn't mean that
12:52
I'm in a position to decide what is
12:53
right and wrong that's the great
12:55
temptation of Adam and Eve but it does
12:57
mean that I am now able to be drawn
13:00
nearer to the Lord and to do what he
13:02
said in obedience not because of fear
13:06
but in obedience that comes from Love
13:09
and so it's a good reminder it's an
13:11
important reminder and frankly the
13:12
number of saints who have found enormous
13:14
satisfaction and happiness in that
13:16
should give us a sense of consolation
13:18
that this is not something opposed to
13:20
our Humanity but it's something that
13:22
genuinely fulfills it because the Lord
13:24
tells us in this love in Disobedience we
13:28
do find Freedom which is so so much more
13:31
than the world has to offer in the name
13:33
of the father and of the son and of the
13:35
holy spirit amen
13:50
blessed are you Lord God of all creation
13:53
and through your goodness we have
13:55
received the bread we offer you fruit of
13:57
the earth and work of human hands it
14:00
will become for us the bread of life
14:08
foreign
14:33
blessed are you Lord God of all creation
14:36
for through your goodness we have
14:38
received the wine we offer you fruit of
14:40
the vine and work of human hands it will
14:43
become our spiritual dream
14:54
I'm praying my brothers and sisters that
14:56
my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable
14:58
to God the almighty father may the Lord
15:01
accept the sacrifice of my hand for the
15:04
praise and the glory of his name for our
15:07
good the good of all his holy church
15:09
receive Holy Father the offerings we
15:11
bring in commemoration of the Holy
15:13
Martyrs and Grant that we your servants
15:15
may be found steadfast in confessing
15:17
your name through Christ Our Lord
15:20
the Lord be with
15:23
lift up your hearts
15:26
let us give thanks to the Lord our God
15:30
it is truly right and just our duty and
15:32
our Salvation always and everywhere to
15:35
give you thanks Lord Holy Father
15:37
Almighty and eternal God for you are
15:39
praised in the company of your Saints
15:41
and in crowning their merits you Crown
15:43
your own gifts by their way of life you
15:46
offer us an example and by communion
15:48
with him you give us companionship and
15:50
by their intercession sure support so
15:53
that encouraged by so great a cloud of
15:55
witnesses we may run as Victors in the
15:58
race before us and when with them the
16:01
imperishable Crown of Glory through
16:02
Christ Our Lord and so with the Angels
16:05
and Archangels and with the great
16:06
multitude of the Saints we sing the hymn
16:09
of your praise as Without End we acclaim
16:13
holy holy holy Lord God of hosts Heaven
16:18
and Earth are full of your glory hosanna
16:21
in the highest blessed is he who comes
16:24
in the name of the Lord hosanna in the
16:27
house
16:30
you are indeed holy O Lord and all you
16:32
have created rightly gives you praise
16:34
for through your son our Lord Jesus
16:36
Christ by the power and working of the
16:39
Holy Spirit you give life to all things
16:41
and make them holy and you never cease
16:44
to gather a people to yourself so that
16:46
from the rising of the sun to its
16:48
setting a pure sacrifice may be offered
16:50
to your name and therefore O Lord we
16:53
humbly implore you by The Same Spirit
16:55
graciously make holy these gifts we have
16:58
brought to you for consecration that
17:00
they may become the body and blood of
17:03
your son our Lord Jesus Christ at whose
17:05
command we celebrate these Mysteries
17:08
from the night he was betrayed he
17:10
himself took bread and giving you thanks
17:12
he said the bless him broke the bread
17:14
and gave it to his disciples saying
17:17
take this all of you and eat of it for
17:21
this is my body which will be given up
17:24
for you
17:42
in a similar way when supper was ended
17:44
he took the chalice and giving you
17:46
thanks he said the blessing and gave the
17:48
Chalice to his disciples saying
17:51
take this all of you and drink from
17:54
for this is the Chalice of My Blood
17:57
the blood of the new and eternal
17:59
Covenant which will be poured out for
18:01
you and for many for the Forgiveness of
18:04
do this in memory of me
18:23
the mystery of faith
18:25
we Proclaim your death O Lord and
18:29
profess your Resurrection until you come
18:32
again
18:33
and therefore O Lord as we celebrate the
18:35
memorial of the saving passion of your
18:37
son his wondrous resurrection and
18:40
Ascension into heaven and as we look
18:42
forward to his second coming we offer
18:45
you in Thanksgiving this holy and Living
18:47
Sacrifice
18:49
look we pray upon the oblation of your
18:51
church and recognizing the sacrificial
18:53
victim by whose death you willed to
18:56
reconcile us to yourself
18:58
grant that we who are nourished by the
19:00
body and blood of your son and filled
19:02
with this Holy Spirit may become one
19:04
body one Spirit In Christ
19:06
and may he make of us an eternal
19:08
offering to you so that we may obtain an
19:10
inheritance with your elect especially
19:12
with the Most Blessed Virgin Mary Mother
19:14
of God with blessed Joseph her spouse
19:17
with your blessed Apostles and glorious

their passing from this life give kind
20:02
