second and he was probably in what we
0:02
would call Greece either at the very
0:04
bottom in Macedonia or if you're a
0:06
historical professional Macedonia or
0:09
possibly a little bit further north and
0:11
remember he's writing to Corinthians who
0:13
are in Greece as well so he's in the
0:15
neighborhood Paul's theme Here is very
0:19
very specifically Ministry now
0:22
specifically he's talking about how
0:23
awesome and wonderful it is to be called
0:25
a minister of the gospel and and it's an
0:28
exciting letter and he's really pumped
0:30
but at the same time
0:32
um
0:33
the but then new drama showed up and if
0:37
we're really being honest with ourselves
0:38
this is probably third Corinthians
0:40
because there's definitely a um so in
0:43
First Corinthians right Paul sent off
0:46
his letter saying there's drama here's
0:48
how to respond to all the things for
0:49
this new little community of Christians
0:51
well Paul's advice was taken and the
0:54
problems in the community we have
0:56
evidence of was cleared up pretty well
0:58
but the new problem is that some Jews
1:02
have arrived from out of town and they
1:04
don't like Paul personally now that talk
1:07
where people get their quality news you
1:09
know that didn't have any slant or bias
1:11
and so they all they knew was that Paul
1:14
was this jerk who you know had done all
1:16
these jerky things and now here he is
1:18
preaching Christianity is it a scam is
1:21
it a lie we don't know so it's not like
1:23
these Jews are bad folks but they've
1:25
arrived in town and they're saying that
1:27
Paul good what a jerk you don't want
1:29
anything to do with him now
1:32
we know that no one ever has had bad
1:34
things to say about their Pastor in
1:36
private but let's assume that that can
1:39
happen that people would complain about
1:40
their pastor and so the the main
1:43
complaint that arises or the one I
1:45
should say that gets grip in the
1:47
community is not that Paul was a jerk
1:49
back when he was in Jerusalem but that
1:51
Paul never met Jesus in person and of
1:55
course all of these people in Corinth
1:56
they were like hang on so this is where
1:58
the drama really begins to arise and so
2:02
Paul is Paul a real Apostle if you've
2:05
never met now we set the stage this is
2:07
where the drama arises and so because of
2:11
of this and because also the uh his
2:14
parishioners whatever that means and
2:16
also no joke they say he's a Shabby
2:18
dresser
2:19
as a frumpy fat guy myself I can say
2:21
that's kind of a pretty dark insult I
2:24
mean you know what are you going to do
2:25
Paul was a tent maker I mean you know
2:27
you know it's not like he was walking
2:28
around in purple but despite all that
2:30
they complained that Paul's a jerk he's
2:32
all these bad things and and he's a
2:35
Shabby dresser which of course is the
2:37
big big blow to his ego so these jerks
2:40
they don't know what they're talking
2:40
about but now he's got to write some
2:43
kind of you know catch-all letter that's
2:46
going to put all these responses
2:47
together and so we we have this kind of
2:52
sort of kind of come to Jesus letter
2:54
where he's going to take his time and
2:56
address these issues that are leveled
2:59
against him also I should say that the
3:01
scholars of this kind of stuff believe
3:04
that the second letter this letter is
3:05
the make this letter scene second
3:07
Corinthians Paul wants to talk about
3:11
Jesus
3:13
Paul was not interested in in talking
3:15
about himself he's not even super in
3:18
fact as they don't like me they don't
3:19
like me what am I going to do he really
3:21
has to kind of be have a good reputation
3:25
his reputation has to be intact
3:27
um and and having been I'm the
3:29
representative of the Gospel in this
3:30
community so I have to fight it's a
3:32
tough place to be in so that's what Paul
3:33
is trying to do in second Corinthians if
3:36
you remember back in First Corinthians
3:38
he's got a new community of people who
3:40
are asking a bunch of specific questions
3:42
about how to follow Jesus and so Paul
3:45
writes this kind of wonderful loquacious
3:47
explanation of all these different
3:49
matters that they're interested in
3:51
reputation and so
3:53
letter and that's important because a
3:56
lot of Paul's other letters Romans
3:58
especially feels like he starts at Point
4:01
a and he makes his way very logically to
4:04
point B and that letter you guys have a
4:06
good afternoon here though because the
4:09
complaints being made about him are so
4:11
distinct it really feels like uh okay
4:14
I'm just going to have to go Point by
4:16
Point down this stupid argument and once
4:18
I get done with this one we're just
4:20
going to stop cold start a new page and
4:22
and it feels a lot like that it's a
4:24
lightning but it is salty and it is
4:27
sarcastic and for somebody who really
4:29
appreciates that and whose confirmation
4:31
Saint is Paul I like this it makes me
4:34
very happy and so for for what it's
4:36
worth Paul was angry he's frustrated not
4:39
know so much because he's been insulted
4:40
but because Jesus is a shin letter that
4:43
he's checked in with Peter and the Gang
4:46
he's had the whole so Paul was first of
4:48
all just kind of kind of SWAT that down
4:50
are Paul's basic self-defense you said
4:53
this and you're this talk and this is
4:55
one of the most uncohesive sections of
4:57
the entire New Testament where Paul was
4:59
like listen having said all that I'd
5:02
love to to you to fill out the envelope
5:04
in your Pew and fuse send a few dollars
5:06
to the church in Jerusalem because
5:07
they're in need and it really does feel
5:10
like a Jerusalem is in need and if and
5:12
we've got to put our money where our
5:14
mouth is kind of thing so chapters one
5:16
through seven are this kind of very kind
5:17
of salty section chapters eight and nine
5:20
are a commercial and then the whole
5:22
letter scripture but it has a very very
5:25
different feel than most of the other
5:26
letters and I want to say uh kind of a
5:29
brief word about the underlying to get
5:31
into it and so on
5:33
um in the Old Testament you you sortic
5:36
the Injustice to his reputation again
5:39
for the purpose of the for the reason
5:41
that it's it's short changing Jesus but
5:45
is it okay to rage for us as Christians
5:47
what matters if I have to suffer or if
5:50
Paul has to suffer an entirely private
5:54
entirely secret Injustice
5:57
then he can try to fix that Injustice he
6:01
can try to bring Justice to it but it
6:04
really is the definition of take up your
6:05
cross and follow me so something happens
6:07
totally private right you make a private
6:09
you know arrangement with someone that
6:11
they're going to give you X number of
6:12
dollars in exchange for your old car or
6:15
for whatever and you know your
6:17
grandmother's biscuit recipe and then
6:19
that person doesn't pay you you don't
6:21
really have any room to rage against
6:23
there's not a a forum in charity for
6:27
public outrage
6:29
but
6:30
and Paul kind of alludes to this if Paul
6:33
is treated with Injustice in a public
6:36
way and
6:39
he represents something more than
6:42
himself in Paul's case of course that's
6:45
Jesus but we could imagine something
6:47
like in our own Community someone who
6:49
was the face of the Council on Aging or
6:52
agency and that person is treated with
6:54
disrespect or is treated with Injustice
6:56
that person almost has a moral
6:59
obligation on behalf of the organ
7:03
again in charity against any represental
7:06
if that person's reputation is damaged
7:08
and they don't do anything to fix it
7:11
then there is a certain crime against
7:14
the Church of Scandal
7:17
um and so we we've of course seen this a
7:19
lot in the last 30 years in in the
7:21
American church but it is something that
7:23
raises a little bit of a question about
7:25
why Paul can or should rage out
7:30
especially in those last four chapters
7:32
against the damage being done to his
7:34
reputation and of course here we see
7:37
that the reason is because Jesus is the
7:40
one being shortchanged with the nonsense
7:42
and as I said if this is the more
7:44
considered more thought out letter I
7:47
really would like to see a copy of the
7:49
actual Second Corinthians where he just
7:51
shot from the hip and just ranted and
7:53
raved
7:54
um but that's it that's that's Second
7:56
Corinthians it's not a particularly hard
7:57
letter to understand but it's not a
7:59
letter I could stick in with First
8:01
Corinthians because it just didn't make
8:02
sense to to put these two together and
8:05
so that is the the entirety of those who
8:07
are watching this live do Please be
8:09
aware are running Us in the CU catech
