or most of us have never heard of me
0:01
doesn't show up much I think he shows up
0:03
very briefly in the lectionary but most
0:04
of us have never even heard the name and
0:06
we think they're talking about Zachariah
0:08
or Zechariah now the prophet Zephaniah
0:11
wrote during the time of King Josiah who
0:14
we talked about a ton when we were doing
0:17
the historical books because he was the
0:19
one who kind of hired a bunch of
0:21
historians and did a lot of kind of
0:23
bringing together of the history of the
0:26
Jewish people so Jose Zephaniah is
0:28
writing about 635 BC or so and like most
0:32
of the Minor Prophets this book is very
0:34
short it's his identity as a writer is
0:37
largely unknown and his theme is very
0:40
focused meaning he's not somebody who
0:42
did a bunch of stuff he's somebody who
0:44
wrote one quick simple direct thing and
0:48
he may have prophesied for years and
0:49
years but all we have is this focused
0:52
little bit his primary importance
0:54
honestly is that he is the first prophet
0:57
that we know of to write anything saying
1:00
after Isaiah the first died after the
1:03
first of the Isaiah prophets passes away
1:06
in fact zephaniah's book comes out 50
1:09
years after Isaiah dies and so all of
1:12
this stuff that we get in the book of
1:14
The Prophet Zephaniah is taking place
1:16
just at the end of the Kings of Israel
1:21
the kings in Judah if you remember the
1:23
history the northern kingdom is
1:25
destroyed in the 700s BC and the kingdom
1:28
of Judea the bottom country the lower
1:30
country where Jerusalem is is conquered
1:34
by the Babylonians in 587 BC so we're a
1:38
generation ahead of the loss of the
1:41
Southern Kingdom and we're a generation
1:43
or two behind the destruction of the
1:46
northern kingdom now as you expect
1:49
because Zephaniah is the first major
1:51
prophet to show up on the scene after
1:53
Isaiah he is going to continue following
1:56
the themes of the prophet Isaiah and
1:58
he's going to continue to follow the
2:00
basic patterns of Old Testament prophecy
2:03
and so the basic way that works is there
2:05
are bad days ahead just get ready but
2:08
those bad days are not just at random we
2:11
earned them and we deserve them and God
2:14
is good and even though he's going to
2:16
swat us around a little bit ultimately a
2:18
Remnant will make it through and so we
2:21
have hope in the future that's the basic
2:23
Pro program for all of the Old Testament
2:27
basically everything the Jews screw
2:29
something up it's okay they deserved it
2:31
God's going to show mercy good things
2:33
will come of this just not right now and
2:36
so as with most of the other prophets
2:38
Zephaniah is going to be very very
2:40
strongly interested in one or two big
2:44
issues of the day and his big issue of
2:48
the day is going to be the idol worship
2:50
so basically once the northern kingdom
2:52
is lost you start having these these
2:55
folks from uh from Modern Day Iran and
2:57
Iraq bring their religions in to the
3:00
northern kingdom and so people who are
3:02
around Jerusalem who have never had to
3:04
deal with Idol worshiping coming from
3:07
the North or with other religions are
3:09
now going to be intermarrying with
3:12
people who are worshiping false gods and
3:14
so Zephaniah is going to come out strong
3:16
and go this is a bad thing we need to do
3:19
whatever it takes to get out of the way
3:21
of that and in fact the the primary
3:24
reason he's going to put for the coming
3:26
tribulation is idol worship and which
3:30
ultimately is a function of this
3:31
intermarriage and um when you read the
3:34
book of The Prophet Zephaniah they're
3:36
going to call that Superstition largely
3:39
because it's very difficult to translate
3:40
idol worship into something that that we
3:43
understand but they're going to call it
3:44
Superstition and in fact the reason
3:46
Zephaniah is giving that the real bad
3:48
stuff is coming is it's not just Bob the
3:51
farmer you know living outside of
3:53
Nazareth that's doing this it's in fact
3:56
Kings who are now intermarrying and
3:58
worshiping Idols in particular the king
4:01
Manasseh the king Amon and the King
4:03
Josiah are going to be in the crosshairs
4:06
for for zephaniah's prophecy he does
4:09
however and this is something that that
4:11
kind of gives him a little bit of
4:12
broader interest outside of just a very
4:15
very small Focus
4:17
Zephaniah actually gives us a little bit
4:19
of information about the broader
4:21
political landscape that's going on in
4:24
in that time in Iran and Iraq which is
4:27
basically going to be the Assyrian
4:29
Empire in the Babylonian Empire you
4:31
remember that the Assyrians are the ones
4:33
that have been there a long time they're
4:34
defeated by the Babylonians which is why
4:38
we call it the Babylonian exile and not
4:40
the Assyrian Exile well Zephaniah is
4:43
coming out before that happens and so he
4:46
is basically explaining that the
4:48
Babylonians are going to win there's a
4:50
war going on the Assyrians are out the
4:53
Babylonians are in and that's probably
4:55
not going to be good for us and so in
4:57
his very very brief three chapter long
4:59
book a lot of stuff happens but not a
5:02
lot of it is especially useful for us as
5:04
Christians now as you can tell
5:07
Zephaniah is not exactly Mr originality
5:10
basically everything in his book is said
5:12
elsewhere it's said frequently the
5:15
primary value of his book is his place
5:18
in history and his comments on the
5:21
broader political situation around him
5:23
so it's not going to be the exciting
5:26
book okay it's just really not I'm sure
5:28
sorry about that there's nothing that's
5:29
going to get you whooped up and excited
5:31
about it the biggest thing that's
5:33
interesting about it that you'll enjoy I
5:35
hope is chapter one has this graphic
5:39
depiction of the day of the Lord what
5:43
will these end of days look like that's
5:46
the most interesting part of Zephaniah
5:48
at least for most folks who are reading
5:50
it and so chapter 1 verses 14 through 18
5:54
are the big poetic verses of zephaniah's
5:57
book and in fact they are going to be
5:59
those those stanzas of his book are
6:03
actually going to show up in the DS era
6:05
Diaz illa the Great hymn that was sung
6:08
for All Souls day and that was sung on
6:11
for Requiem masses and so um that that's
6:15
probably the most interesting aspect of
6:17
the Prophet Zephaniah and why people
6:19
continue to study his book so just to
6:22
give you a brief outline
6:23
we're looking at four parts in three
6:25
chapters chapter one we have the day of
6:28
the Lord especially as it's going to
6:30
play out for Jerusalem and for Judah
6:33
chapter 2 is going to be God's judgment
6:36
on the Nations chapter 3 the first half
6:39
is going to be God's judgment on Judah
6:42
and then chapter four the second half or
6:45
chapter three the second half is going
6:47
to be the promise of restoration so we
6:50
have the day of the Lord God's judgment
6:52
to the Nations God's judgment to us and
6:54
then the promise of restoration three
6:57
very brief chapters not a whole lot more
7:00
to say about Zephaniah we have three of
7:03
the Minor Prophets left to go and then
7:05
once we finish the Minor Prophets
7:07
because there's not a whole lot more to
7:09
talk about we will do a brief or I will
7:11
do a brief overview of the history that
7:15
we've done what are the big events and
7:18
personages of the entirety of the Old
7:20
Testament and then I'll do a little bit
7:22
of reaching into the new Testament and
7:25
then I want to do a second talk a
7:27
separate talk on a bit of a review of
7:30
what we've looked at not just the
7:32
historical timeline but what are the
7:34
sections of the books of the Old
7:36
Testament just to give us kind of a high
7:38
scale overview now that we've had the
7:39
particular one and then we will dive
7:41
into the gospels which will be really
7:44
quite challenging so we have about five
7:46
talks left before we're going to dive
7:48
into the gospels but we have made our
7:50
way through functionally at this point
7:52
the entirety of the Old Testament so we
7:53
can all be proud that we've survived all
7:56
these talks over the course of the last
7:57
year and that's it for Zephaniah and so
8:00
more to come next time until then my
8:03
name is Father Ryan Humphries this has
8:04
been the CU catechast thank you for
8:06
