the historical books we've done the
0:02
Psalms the wisdom books the Major
0:04
Prophets The Minor Prophets and now we
0:07
reach Malachi or Malachi depending on
0:10
whether you prefer more uh kind of a
0:13
uridic slash Aramaic translation or
0:16
pronunciation or a more Greek
0:18
pronunciation most Americans say Malachi
0:21
so I'm going to stick with that Malachi
0:23
is the pronunciation that I was taught
0:25
in seminary I guess because it sounds
0:26
more pretentious I don't know but but
0:28
Malachi is who we're talking about today
0:30
the last of the Minor Prophets and
0:34
technically in most American
0:35
constructions most Modern English
0:37
constructions of the Bible we have
0:40
Malachi and then we have the books of
0:42
Maccabees I of course put the books of
0:45
Maccabees back with the historical books
0:47
uh and and so we are looking at the last
0:49
of the books even though if you're going
0:51
to going through the actual Bible in
0:53
your hand you're looking and saying
0:55
there's still two books left the two
0:56
books of
0:58
um of the um whoever I just said but
1:01
we'll uh we'll we'll knock out the Book
1:03
of Malachi today and so very much like
1:07
Nehemiah
1:08
Malachi is writing about the temple and
1:12
he's writing at a very very specific
1:15
moment in history which is why he's so
1:17
important for scripture Scholars and the
1:19
like so he's writing after the temple
1:23
has been rebuilt so that's 515 BC the
1:26
temple has been rebuilt after the end of
1:29
the Babylonian exile but Malachi is
1:33
writing before
1:35
Ezra's book is actually written in about
1:38
four 45 BC so we're looking at a very
1:43
specific window here the temple is back
1:45
but king or brother the priest Ezra has
1:48
not come in yet and actually kind of
1:51
Knocked everybody's heads around and got
1:53
them all in order and so we're right
1:55
here in that interim window in 450 or so
1:57
BC and the prophet Malachi is ready to
2:00
go now Malachi or Malachi is a Hebrew
2:04
word that just means my messenger
2:07
uh it is not necessarily a proper name
2:12
and because the word doesn't even show
2:14
up until the third chapter almost the
2:17
the late middle of the book it's not
2:20
necessarily likely that there was some
2:23
cat named Malachi walking around going
2:25
I'm Malachi and I'm the prophet who's
2:27
saying these things it is entirely
2:30
possible that this is a pen name it is
2:32
entirely possible that the
2:34
capitalization is accidental and the
2:37
profit is simply operating anonymously
2:39
and so we have no idea
2:41
Malachi was a very very common name so
2:44
it could be a bunch of different things
2:46
we don't really know anything about the
2:49
prophet beyond that fact now the theme
2:51
of the book and this is where things get
2:53
important the book is four chapters long
2:55
the theme is now we have this nice fancy
2:59
new Temple let's not be jerks about The
3:02
Way We Worship the Lord in it
3:05
um basically we don't want to lose touch
3:07
with the authenticity of worship just
3:10
because we've now finished the temple
3:12
that doesn't mean we're done this is in
3:16
a certain sense parallel to we've built
3:19
now this big expensive fancy new church
3:21
and now we can kind of say well I don't
3:23
have to take my faith as seriously
3:24
anymore because we're done with it where
3:27
my parents who have actually they just
3:28
built a new 13 million dollar church and
3:31
everybody was very engaged you know
3:33
fundraisers and and prayer nights and
3:36
vigils and stuff like that but now the
3:37
church is done and paid for and all of a
3:40
sudden attendance said that Holy hours
3:42
has gone down attendance and mass has
3:45
gone down and so it's something that's
3:47
very very human that we see in the Book
3:50
of Malachi now remember
3:53
Maliki his purpose here is to tell
3:55
people to be authentic in worship and so
3:59
his book his prophecy really gives us
4:02
that business I mean he slams the
4:04
business that worship cannot be
4:06
self-centered it cannot be neglectful of
4:09
the pure worship of God we're here to
4:12
worship for God's sake and not for hours
4:16
and if you'd like to see what
4:18
self-centered worship looks like with
4:21
over emphasized interest and personal
4:24
preferences to the detriment of the
4:26
worship of God I would like to invite
4:29
you to or direct you rather to 90
4:31
percent of the Catholic churches in the
4:33
United States where their interest there
4:36
is primarily about what we want and only
4:39
in a very distant way what God wants I
4:42
can also direct you to 99.9 percent of
4:45
seminaries around the world where they
4:47
are begging priests to behave in exactly
4:50
that way because it's just easier to get
4:52
along
4:53
that makes Malachi an incredibly
4:56
relevant book even for us today because
4:59
it is it is absolutely common to walk
5:03
into a Catholic church or a Protestant
5:05
church or whatever and have people be
5:07
rambling on about how this is the way we
5:10
prefer it or this is the way we do it
5:13
here or this is the tradition of the way
5:15
we have it there's actually a church not
5:17
far from here that has just transitioned
5:20
from being a church that's run by a
5:22
religious order for many many years to
5:24
being run by the diocese and one of the
5:27
hard things the priest had to say is
5:30
that several people came up and said
5:31
well the franciscans always did it this
5:33
way and the priest basically had to look
5:35
at them and say and it failed which is
5:38
why the franciscans aren't running this
5:40
Parish anymore they couldn't maintain it
5:42
because they got no vocations because
5:44
their way of doing things failed
5:48
and that's an incredibly uncomfortable
5:50
thing to have to say to somebody but
5:52
that's kind of what Malachi is coming
5:55
out and saying he's saying look you have
5:57
the nice big beautiful Temple but you've
5:59
got to maintain authentic worship you
6:01
can't just rest on your laurels
6:04
now Malachi tells us that the Holiness
6:08
of the Jewish people consists almost
6:11
entirely in their worship it's not about
6:16
earning salvation by doing the right
6:19
things moral living is secondary to the
6:22
religious component of worship it is not
6:25
the big thing we do and I've preached
6:28
about this before frequently where we
6:30
get into our heads the idea that as long
6:32
as I'm living a moral life as long as
6:33
I'm a good person then I'm okay with the
6:37
Lord but that's Buddhism Buddhism says
6:40
as long as I'm doing what needs to be
6:42
done and following the Eightfold Path
6:43
then I'm good with the universe we don't
6:45
believe that worship is the driving
6:48
component of Catholicism and it is the
6:51
driving component of Judaism that's one
6:55
of the reasons that if you can actually
6:57
make a compelling argument that
6:59
Catholicism is closer to Judaism than it
7:02
is to Baptists or president
7:04
Presbyterians or Methodist or even
7:06
episcopalians because worship has to be
7:10
the center of what makes Jews Jews and
7:14
so Malachi argues that if we disconnect
7:15
from that we are not good Jews he also
7:19
says look fear of the Lord AKA reverence
7:22
in the context of Temple worship is the
7:26
Beating Heart of Judaism and so he does
7:29
this by means of six oracles across
7:32
three chapters and then we have two kind
7:34
of appendices that add in for the fourth
7:37
chapter so number one the lord loves
7:40
Israel in spite of her many many many
7:42
many many many many many many many many
7:44
many many many
7:45
faults the Lord is there for Israel but
7:48
Israel has got some troubles and needs
7:50
to recognize them number two
7:53
the priests and the Levites have been
7:57
unfaithful by neglecting the standards
8:00
of worship especially as it relates to
8:02
the offering of sacrifices and the
8:05
teaching of the law especially the
8:07
teaching of the law about sacrifices and
8:11
so just as now and just as then the
8:14
priests are to blame there was a priest
8:17
some years ago who famously said all the
8:20
evil in the world today is the fault of
8:22
priests I could not agree more and
8:25
Malachi would absolutely agree certainly
8:28
as he gets into the second of those
8:30
intense oracles the third Oracle says
8:32
God hates divorce and he hates
8:34
Interfaith marriage we're not going to
8:36
dig into that too much it was something
8:38
that was very very big issue and we
8:40
think Interfaith marriage we tend to
8:42
think oh well Catholic and a Baptist
8:43
that causes some drama we're talking
8:45
here about a Jew and somebody who might
8:48
worship multiple gods and want to bring
8:52
you know a play pigeon into the house
8:55
and say this is an icon of my God and so
8:59
there's a very very different kind of
9:00
GrooVe when you say well I'm I'm
9:03
marrying a Christian who doesn't really
9:05
get Christianity right to I'm marrying
9:08
someone who is an active practitioner of
9:11
Wicca right I mean even nowadays we
9:13
would say I can't approve of a Catholic
9:16
marrying a Wiccan I can't approve of a
9:18
Catholic who's marrying a Hindu because
9:21
that's going to cause real trouble and
9:24
so when we think Interfaith marriage we
9:26
don't want to think Catholic Baptists we
9:28
want to thank Catholic Hindu we want to
9:30
thank Catholic Wiccan things that are
9:33
really going to butt heads on every
9:35
aspect of the marital life the fourth of
9:39
the prophet of the the oracles rather is
9:41
that the Lord is going to come and
9:43
purify both the temple and the Levites
9:47
the the priests which is a big deal
9:49
because it's one thing for us to say the
9:51
Lord is going to have a Remnant that
9:53
comes through with the idea being that a
9:55
messiah is going to come with a stick
9:57
and Beat to Death everybody who's
9:58
Troublesome which is basically the way
10:00
that they were we see or we have seen in
10:03
the Minor Prophets but here we have the
10:05
idea the Lord will purify them not by
10:07
destroying them but by coming into the
10:10
temple and through right worship he will
10:13
make things better
10:15
the fifth Oracle talks about the
10:17
prosperity of the land and how it will
10:20
come back when the people really begin
10:23
to tithe now again we're not thinking
10:26
about tithing in the Joel Olsteen sins
10:29
where we got to keep the lights on we're
10:31
thinking about tithing as a way of
10:33
saying that which I care about I invest
10:37
my entire self in and so the idea of
10:40
tithing is a spiritual act that is not
10:44
about keeping the lights in the church
10:46
on it is about saying I want to give the
10:49
Lord my whole heart soul mind and
10:51
strength and part of that is giving the
10:54
lord of the physical wealth I have
10:56
because if I invest that I myself am
11:02
going to connect with how important it
11:04
is it's kind of like if you have a guy's
11:06
poker night and everybody doesn't and
11:09
the tithe there's a sack of chips or
11:11
something like that I've been to those
11:12
poker nights nobody cares you know you
11:15
feel like you want to get up and leave
11:17
you just say I'm all in and you just get
11:19
up and walk away but if you put in 50
11:22
bucks or something like that just enough
11:24
where you feel like I really need to see
11:26
this through to the end because I put
11:28
money into this it works the same way
11:30
with tithing there's a there's a degree
11:32
of human mindset where the investment
11:35
itself matters and so the idea that the
11:38
prosperity of the land will return when
11:40
the people take the tithing especially
11:42
as it relates to the temple more
11:45
seriously and then the sixth of the
11:46
oracles those who fear the lord who
11:49
reverence the temple and keep his
11:51
Commandments will be saved on the day of
11:54
judgment so we get that in four chapters
11:57
six of these oracles the lord loves
11:59
Israel in spite of its faults the
12:01
priests and Levites have been unfaithful
12:03
God hates Interfaith marriage the Lord
12:05
will surely come to purify the temple
12:07
Prosperity will return with tithing and
12:10
those who fear the Lord will keep his
12:12
Commandments and be saved on the day of
12:14
judgment and and then we get to
12:16
appendices in chapter four one about
12:18
Moses one about Elijah these definitely
12:21
were added later uh and they they kind
12:24
of are are meant to draw in Moses and
12:27
Elijah to the understanding of the
12:29
temple now Malachi's concern for worship
12:32
also foreshadows our own Catholic faith
12:35
right at the beginning chapter 1 verse 1
12:37
we get the Oracle for from the rising of
12:41
the sun to its setting my name is great
12:44
among the Nations and in every place
12:47
incense is offered to my name and a pure
12:50
offering for my name is great among the
12:53
Nations says the Lord of hosts and it's
12:57
easy to see the Eucharist there it's
12:59
easy to see mass in some of the
13:01
components of mass in that the idea of
13:04
offering a pure offering from the rising
13:06
of the sun to its setting and so each of
13:08
these things kind of connects together
13:10
to say that the temple the temple is abs
13:15
absolutely essential in authentic
13:17
worship is what we need to do here even
13:20
the place where Malachi's name is
13:22
revealed feels like something that could
13:25
come right out of the Gospel so this is
13:27
Malachi 3 1. behold I send my Messenger
13:31
to prepare the way before you and the
13:33
Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to
13:36
his Temple the messenger that's Malachi
13:39
the messenger of the Covenant in whom
13:42
you Delight behold he is coming says the
13:45
Lord of hosts that's something you could
13:47
find in Luke's gospel you know it's very
13:50
very much a book that is relevant to our
13:52
own age even though it was written in
13:55
450 BC and so that's the Book of Malachi
13:59
it's a great one it's easy and it is
14:02
very very relevant to our own day and
14:05
time
14:06
next time we will be looking at a a
14:09
numerical timeline of the Old Testament
14:12
so we're going to say you know what's
14:14
the story with Abraham and ER and let's
14:16
walk through what happened all the way
14:18
through until we get to the youngest
14:21
books of the New Testament the book of
14:23
wisdom just a couple hundred years
14:25
before Jesus shows up and then I will
14:27
give a brief timeline about when the
14:29
gospels are written when Saint Paul was
14:31
writing that kind of thing that will
14:33
take us about a half an hour should be a
14:35
pretty interesting talk I've enjoyed
14:37
writing it so far and then from there we
14:39
will do a thematic timeline of the Old
14:42
Testament talking about kind of the big
14:44
themes of the pentateuch the big themes
14:46
moving forward of the historical books
14:48
and so on and so forth and then once
14:50
we're done with that we'll shift gears
14:53
and we'll be in the New Testament and so
14:55
we'll be talking about the gospels we'll
14:57
be talking about the book of Acts and
14:59
then we'll be making our way through
15:00
Saint Paul's letters all the way up to
15:03
the Book of Revelation and then at the
15:05
very end and I will probably do a talk
15:08
that just kind of summarizes up the the
15:11
story of the Bible and then we'll do uh
15:14
one more talk a final talk of this
15:16
series which will be on how to read the
15:19
Bible in a spiritual sense uh the the
15:22
act of lectio Divina the reading of
15:24
scripture in a spiritual sense and so
15:26
that's what we have coming up ahead of
15:28
us but it has been a wonderful gift to
15:30
make our way through the Old Testament
15:31
together and I hope to see you in the
15:33
future I've been Father Ryan Humphries
15:35
this has been the CU catechest and I
15:37
hope you have a lovely day
