0:12
good morning i'm father ryan humphries
0:13
welcome to the cu catacast and today
0:16
we're looking at the third book of
0:18
scripture which is closely associated
0:20
with the prophet jeremiah and so the
0:23
first is obviously jeremiah the second
0:26
is the book of lamentations which
0:28
consists of five psalms that were
0:32
assembled ostensibly by jeremiah but
0:34
probably by
0:35
by someone else working with him after
0:38
the fall of jerusalem
0:40
after that should say the babylonian
0:42
captivity the third and the final book
0:45
we look at today is the book of baruch
0:47
which is attributed directly to
0:49
jeremiah's friend and personal secretary
0:52
baruch
0:54
if you remember jeremiah's great
0:56
contribution to uh
0:59
to scripture is this kind of
1:01
internalized
1:02
self-reflection right all the other
1:04
prophets write these big dramatic things
1:07
that happen or don't happen but jeremiah
1:09
kind of stops and looks within and he
1:12
has some important prophecies for israel
1:14
some important prophecies for other
1:16
things but the best part of his writing
1:19
is this internalized notion of a
1:21
spiritual life and lamentation really
1:24
grabs on to that and of course the
1:27
middle of each of those psalms part
1:28
three we have this kind of internalized
1:31
sort of thing going on which is
1:33
beautiful and it's very poetic
1:36
now baruch's a contribution happens in a
1:39
very similar vein in that he gives us an
1:42
internalized perspective but this time
1:44
not from himself but from the point of
1:46
view of the jewish diaspora
1:50
now what is the jewish diaspora you ask
1:52
yourself and i ask you so i have
1:54
something to talk about well it's very
1:56
very simple the jewish diaspora is the
1:59
group of jewish people who were cast out
2:02
of israel jerusalem and lived elsewhere
2:06
very simply put so if you remember after
2:08
the fall of the northern kingdom the
2:10
jews from the northern kingdom were
2:13
thrown around the middle east you had
2:15
folks in modern-day egypt modern-day
2:17
turkey modern-day libya iran iraq all
2:21
over the middle east you have the jewish
2:23
people spread out after that happened
2:25
and even into the roman empire going
2:28
into rome itself
2:30
going into the northern germanic parts
2:32
of the roman empire and in the other
2:34
direction of course the babylonian
2:36
empire which is iran iraq and turkey but
2:39
even further toward india even
2:42
you have the jews spread out all across
2:44
the the world well after the fall of
2:48
jerusalem happens the same thing the
2:50
jews get chunked in all sorts of
2:52
different directions but instead of
2:54
landing in a place that had no jewish
2:56
background they now found themselves
2:59
being able to connect with ghettos in
3:02
different communities in the city of
3:03
rome and in the the larger parts of the
3:06
world and being able to say hey there's
3:08
a jewish community alive and thriving in
3:10
alexandria egypt
3:13
and so the jewish diaspora kind of gets
3:15
connected and there's all these little
3:17
central uh these little places where the
3:19
jews have set up shop well when
3:22
everything ends when the when the
3:24
babylonian captivity ends and ezra and
3:26
nehemiah come back in and we're going to
3:28
be able to reestablish the temple there
3:30
are plenty of those jews who have
3:32
families businesses who don't want to go
3:35
home they're perfectly satisfied and a
3:37
lot of them were born in this diaspora
3:40
and have no particular desire to go to
3:43
the homeland the motherland
3:45
they just don't have that and so the
3:47
jewish diaspora consists of cultural
3:50
jews and religious jews as well as those
3:55
ethnic jews who want to go home and
3:57
there's different phraseology for that
3:59
but what baruch really does for us is he
4:03
gives us a glimpse into the interior
4:05
life of those jews in diaspora
4:09
especially the ones who want to go home
4:11
the ones who want to return to the
4:13
temple
4:15
and he specifically looks at it from the
4:17
point of view of modern day iran and
4:20
modern-day egypt that's the places where
4:23
these the the jewish diaspora that
4:25
baruch has connections with are doing
4:27
their thing and so that makes for kind
4:29
of you understand it's it's a
4:31
fascinating picture uh and an interior
4:34
look at something we would otherwise not
4:35
have a good way to get a look at so
4:38
baruch is a simple book it's in six
4:40
chapters it starts with a statement of
4:43
authorship which connects it back to
4:46
baruch but the book was obviously
4:48
written by several folks you have
4:50
different sections that have very
4:51
different vocabulary very different ways
4:53
of writing and it was probably written a
4:56
good deal later because it seems to
4:59
reference the maccabean revolt which is
5:01
going to take place in the 2nd century
5:03
bc jeremiah is going to die in the 6th
5:07
century bc so there's no meaningful way
5:10
that his best friend wrote this thing
5:12
400 years later
5:14
and so just like a lot of the wisdom
5:15
books it seems like the the folks who
5:18
wrote this are trying to say look we
5:20
want to put this in the mouth of someone
5:22
close to jeremiah because what we're
5:24
saying is in tune with that and we see
5:26
that in isaiah we saw it of course in
5:28
the wisdom in the history books and
5:30
we'll continue to see some of those
5:32
things happen as we move further along
5:34
even into something like the the letter
5:37
to the hebrews in the new testament that
5:39
seems to sort of kind of be connected to
5:41
paul but not really and we'll look more
5:43
at that when we get to you know 20 books
5:45
ahead and so we have a book here that is
5:48
is in six chapters the authorship is
5:50
claimed to be baruch but probably not
5:52
and its purpose
5:54
is very very much to give us a sense of
5:57
the jewish diaspora now that purpose is
6:00
probably associated um
6:03
with
6:04
with a sense of wanting to not only
6:08
explain what's going on with the jewish
6:11
diaspora but also to instruct and
6:13
encourage the jewish diaspora so just
6:16
like nowadays you might make a
6:17
documentary
6:19
about some people but it primarily wants
6:22
to encourage those people who are in the
6:24
midst of that documentary
6:26
same sort of thing we're trying to kind
6:28
of teach and educate and instruct people
6:30
in the diaspora by writing a book about
6:33
the diaspora
6:35
so that because of that there's no
6:37
single like theological theme we just
6:40
have the idea of this is about what's
6:42
going on in the interior of the diaspora
6:46
perhaps the most important thing that we
6:47
have to keep in mind though is because
6:50
it is about these folks there there is a
6:53
strong sense of the attitudes they
6:55
should have and the attitudes they do
6:58
have and there's a sense of like this is
7:01
the way you should see the world and so
7:04
when we think about themes there's
7:05
overarching stuff like loyalty to the
7:08
temple love for jerusalem obedience to
7:11
the law of moses prayer
7:14
hope in the lord for the future and a
7:17
deliberate sense of resist the pagans
7:20
you know so you have these kind of
7:22
underarching themes but their purpose is
7:24
really to say look for jews in the
7:26
diaspora who are reading this and who
7:28
are connected back to jeremiah who
7:30
ostensibly predicted what's going on
7:33
because he knew because hezekiah was a
7:35
stinker
7:36
because of all these things remember
7:38
these underlying principles from the
7:41
writing of jeremiah and these are the
7:43
attitudes you need to have
7:46
um i find that most readers will tend to
7:48
enjoy chapters three and four chapter
7:50
one is is fairly perfunctory uh chapter
7:53
six has um kind of a songish sort of
7:57
thing to it which is great and all but
7:59
is somewhat difficult to grab but
8:01
chapters three and four really are the
8:03
poetic beautiful center chapter three
8:05
begins with o lord almighty god of
8:08
israel the soul in anguish and the weary
8:11
spirit cry out to you hear o lord and
8:14
have mercy for we have sinned before you
8:16
for you are enthroned forever and we are
8:20
perishing forever you know you have this
8:22
incredibly deep spiritual sense of
8:25
what's going on
8:27
careful readers
8:28
are going to find hints of sirach and
8:31
even hints of job both in the technical
8:34
style and in the kind of the sentiment
8:37
and theme but you don't really need to
8:39
be that close of a reader to to be
8:41
stressed out about anything like that
8:43
this is only six chapters it's a quick
8:45
read it's an easy read the most
8:48
important thing
8:50
by far to remember and you kind of have
8:52
to tattoo this on the inside of your
8:54
eyelid while you're reading it
8:56
is that this is about the jewish
8:59
diaspora
9:00
that's a big deal if we get disconnected
9:03
from that we just kind of feel like this
9:05
cat is just yelling and screaming at
9:07
everything under the sun and it's not
9:09
clear why he's got all these things to
9:11
say uh it's not clear who he's and and
9:14
part of that the difficulty is there is
9:16
a kind of subtext that this is about the
9:18
diaspora rather than him saying in verse
9:20
one my name is baruch and i'm writing to
9:22
the jewish diaspora that would be very
9:24
helpful but he doesn't do that so if you
9:26
want to read it it's an easy read but do
9:29
keep in mind that what he's talking to
9:31
and what he's trying to do is inform
9:34
about and encourage these jews who are
9:37
outside of israel and want to go back
9:40
they want to go back to the temple and
9:42
they should want to go back to the
9:44
temple and they should not simply be
9:46
content with their tent making business
9:49
in downtown ephesus because that is not
9:51
a cool thing to do if you're a jew you
9:54
need to be in jerusalem or you need to
9:56
be in the jewish place and so
9:59
it's a good thing the only kind of
10:01
outside reading note that would be
10:02
helpful is if you are familiar with the
10:06
jewish palestinian stuff going on
10:08
nowadays you can see in the book of
10:11
baruch the attitudes that continue to be
10:15
relevant to the jewish people today
10:17
happening here in baruch the idea of
10:21
it's not just a matter of i want to own
10:24
the gaza strip it's not just a matter of
10:27
you know this 10 miles of territory
10:29
matters strategically or we need to have
10:31
x number of you know whatever we need
10:34
there's the idea of god has told us
10:38
this is supposed to be
10:40
our inheritance and so it doesn't matter
10:42
whether we want 10 miles of random
10:44
desert in the middle of nowheresville
10:46
this is what the lord told us to be in
10:49
charge of and so we're going to be in
10:51
charge of it that's the plan and even if
10:52
it means we have to blow up half of our
10:54
national inventory of bombs missiles and
10:57
everything else we're going to do it
10:59
because this is how the lord wants it
11:01
and that seems insane to us but we can
11:04
see here in the book of baruch the
11:06
foundation of that way of thinking and
11:09
so anyway that's a lot of stuff that's
11:10
not really directly about the book of
11:12
baruch but i still only made it to 10
11:14
minutes it's just what it is there's not
11:15
that much to say
11:17
next time
11:18
we go to ezekiel where there is that
11:21
much to say
11:22
ezekiel is a remarkable prophet there
11:25
are some really exciting passages like
11:27
the valley of dry bones we'll be able to
11:29
point out ezekiel is a monster of a book
11:32
we'll have a lot to say about that also
11:34
after that we'll have daniel which is a
11:36
monster of a book and we'll have a lot
11:38
to say about that and then we'll finally
11:40
flip into the minor prophets who are all
11:42
complicated and we'll get into talking
11:44
about the day of the lord and what joel
11:46
has to say about the end of the world
11:48
and that'll all be a hoot as well
11:50
and so more to come from all the minor
11:52
prophets but we have now finished isaiah
11:55
and we have finished jeremiah and so
11:57
hope you join us next time for the book
11:59
of ezekiel until then i'm father ryan
12:01
humphries this has been the cu catacast
12:02
thank you so much for joining us and
12:04
have a good one
13:33
