8:42
a reading from The Book of Genesis after the man Adam had eaten of
8:49
the tree the Lord God Called To The Man and asked him where are
8:56
you he answered I I heard you in the garden but I was afraid because I was naked so I
9:03
hid myself then he asked who told you that you were naked you have eaten then from
9:11
the Tree of which I had forbidden you to eat the man replied the woman whom you put here with
9:19
me she gave me fruit from the tree and so I ate it the Lord God then asked the
9:26
woman why did you do such a thing the woman answered the serpent tricked me
9:32
into it and so I ate it then the Lord God said to the
9:39
serpent because You' have done this you shall be banned from all the animals and
9:44
from all the wild creatures on your belly shall you crawl and dirt shall you
9:51
eat all the days of your life I will put enmity between you and
9:57
the woman and between your Offspring and hers he will strike at your head while
10:04
you strike at his heel the man called his wife Eve because
10:11
she became the mother of all the living the word of the Lord thanks be to

13:13

13:22
allelu the Lord be with you your SP our reading from the holy Gospel According to St Luke GL to
13:29
the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth to a
13:34
virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph of the House of David and the virgin's name was Mary and coming to her he said
13:41
hail full of grace the Lord is with you but she was greatly troubled at what was
13:47
said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be then the angel said to Hero not be afraid Mary for you have
13:54
found favor with God behold you will conceive in your womb and bear a son and you shall name him Jesus he will be
14:01
great and will be called son of the most high and the Lord go God will give him the Throne of David his father and he
14:08
will rule over the house of Jacob forever and of his kingdom there will be no end but Mary said to the angel how
14:15
can this be since I have no relations with a man and the angel said to her in reply the holy spirit will come upon you
14:23
and the power of the most high will overshadow you therefore the child to be born will be called holy
14:29
the Son of God and behold Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her
14:34
old age and this is the sixth month for her who was called Barren for nothing
14:40
will be impossible for God and Mary said behold I am the handmade of the Lord may
14:45
it be done to me according to your word then the angel departed from her the
14:50
gospel of the Lord
14:55
Praise well we are right in the middle of a string of patronal Feasts that
15:01
apply to us here in the dases of Alexandria this past Sunday was the Feast of St Francis Xavier which is the
15:08
patron of our dicese then this week today is the patronal Feast of our
15:13
nation Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception this coming Tuesday is the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe patroness
15:19
of the Americas and then after we make it through Elvis's birthday on the 8th we have the feast of Our Lady of prompt
15:25
sakur who is the patroness of the state of Louisiana so a lot of patronal Feasts
15:31
all right on top of each other and it causes us to stop and ask what is the
15:37
purpose of patronal fees because we're the country that has to come to mass today right if you go to Spain you go to
15:44
Mexico you go to Germany they have their patronal feast on different days not a holy day of obligation for them it's for
15:51
us because this is our patronal feast and what a patronal feast is ultimately
15:57
is the competent Authority so for us that's our Bishops got together a hundred years ago and decided what our
16:04
nation needs the mysteries of Faith the example of Holiness that we need is
16:11
specifically the Immaculate Conception Our Ladies Immaculate Conception is all
16:16
about purity of intention purity of spirit it is very much about the last
16:21
little bit of Our Gospel today let it be done to me according to your word Lord
16:26
whatever the Holy Spirit wants to bring for me let it be done to me docility
16:32
before the Lord these are the virtues associated with today's feast and we can kind of look around and see that they
16:39
made a pretty good call right because we could use more of that in our lives we could use more Purity we could use more
16:45
purity of intention we could use more sense of Lord you set the direction
16:50
instead of me and that's something that we should think about and take seriously
16:55
because these spiritual matters of ours are not just uh rather these spiritual
17:01
decisions are not meaningless but they are led by the Holy Spirit I think all
17:07
too often we get into our heads the idea that Christianity is just me and the Lord and we're good to go but while
17:13
there is an enormous part of our faith that is Us in the Lord specifically
17:19
Jesus established a church to draw us out of ourselves to get us out of the
17:25
thinking that it's just me and God and so Jesus established around him apostles
17:31
who established a visible Church in order to draw us out remember St Paul
17:36
famously said that faith comes by listening and listening can't be done to yourself right I guess you well I'm a
17:43
little Looney I talk to myself but that's not really how it's meant to be we have to have this back and forth St
17:49
Teresa of Aila said that Christ has no hands on Earth but ours Christ has no
17:55
feet on Earth but ours the Lord established his church in order to draw
18:00
us into this both and there is me and the Lord but there's also us and the
18:05
Lord and this idea of a patronal feast causes us to say what do the we hear as
18:12
opposed to the universal we what do we here need to focus our attention on and
18:19
of course we could ask the same question this coming Tuesday when we celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe a
18:24
feast that is very very much about our Lord coming and being a on us Mary looking with dark skin like a native
18:32
Mayan or a native Mexican drawing us into the reality that God is Among Us in
18:38
the same way we could think about our lady of prompt sucker Our Lady of hasty help being the patroness of Louisiana
18:45
and that draws out of us the way of thinking about how our lady is there when we need her and how God is there
18:51
and we need to focus more on Divine Providence right on God's providing for us in need and so our faith needs needs
18:58
to be genuine in the sense of trusting that God has given us what we need each of those different patronal feasts
19:05
builds together a sense of what it means to be the church here just as the Feast
19:12
of St Edward the Confessor which we celebrated back in October has its own
19:17
specific things that about what it means to be a Christian and a Catholic here
19:22
and so today's feast in particular draws out of us this essential idea of listening to the Lord and of trying to
19:30
free myself of anything that says this is how I think it should be we all have
19:36
an obligation to listen to the Lord and then to live our lives as best as we're able I'm not proposing that we all
19:42
suddenly become nuns and monks sitting around waiting for the Holy Spirit to speak to us in a voice something like
19:48
Charlton hon in the Ten Commandments go do this right that's not what we're waiting on but we are called genuinely
19:56
in our prayer and that's why I've been preaching about it for the last few months to build in some quiet
20:02
time and to listen and to entrust the Lord or to trust that the Lord is going
20:09
to reveal himself that the Lord will tell us what we need and if we're actually listening if we're actually
20:16
pausing then we give God room to speak I think one of the most challenging things
20:22
for us and I'm I'm thankful to God that we have hunters here to remind us of the value of it most most of us never ever
20:29
stop being inundated with noise right even our Farmers now get
20:35
into the uh the the cockpit of the of the machine and there's radio and there's music and there's something
20:40
playing we have screens in front of us and airpods in our ears all the time and
20:46
God forbid that our hunters even now have equipment in their ears so that we're no longer listening even on the
20:51
deer stand and we have to stop and say how much time do we actually have for quiet
20:58
CU too many of us fall asleep to the TV and we wake up and the first thing we do is grab the phone like our lives are
21:04
going to end and the worst fear most of us have is watching that number count down from 10% to 9% to 8% there's no
21:13
charger I might die I might explode the world might end and then that little apple comes up and you go it's bad it's
21:19
really bad when that happens I mean it's bad and we have to wonder whether that's
21:25
healthy for us and we all in intuitively know it isn't and so the very fact that
21:31
our lady was able to listen to Gabriel appearing to her makes us ask how many
21:39
times have has the the the parallel of that has Gabriel tried to appear to me
21:45
but I was busy on social media there's a Tik Tock that was funnier than what the angel felt like he needed to say to me
21:52
and it causes us to pause and if this gospel is meant to be
21:58
for us for our patronal Feast something that is meant to speak to us in particular here in this area of the
22:04
world then we have to in a very real sense say I need to model some more of
22:10
my life on the listening lady who is waiting for the angel to speak to her
22:15
and who is waiting to say let it be done to me according to your word listening
22:20
more and more and more is an essential part of sanity and it's something that we almost never get a chance to do and
22:28
so today becomes a wonderful opportunity for us to think about that now at the same time today is a feast day which I
22:35
love because that means we have a moral obligation to Feast now I'm not going to lie most of us Feast a lot not
22:42
necessarily a good thing and yet today should be a deliberate kind of feast if
22:48
you're used to eating a lot of carbs do something else feasty if you're used to
22:53
drinking six beers every night well you need to cut that down by four or five but do something something different if
22:59
you're used to celebrating a certain way today becomes an opportunity to think about another way that we can choose
23:06
deliberately to make today special and different as a day of feasting and a day of Celebration because that ultimately
23:13
is what the church gives us a feast day and so whatever you need to do to make today a day of feasting do it because
23:21
that is another part of the obligation of a patronal feast it's a big day and we need to let it be a big day day in
23:29
the name of the father and the son and the holy spirit
23:39
amen oh let us stand I believe in one God the Father
23:46
the Almighty maker of heaven and Earth of all things visible and invisible I
23:53
believe in one Lord Jesus Christ the only begotten son of God God born of the
23:59
father before all ages God from God light from light true God from true God
24:05
begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were
24:11
made and for us men and for our Salvation he came down from heaven and
24:17
by the Hoy Spirit was incarn theg Mary and became for our sake he was crucified
24:24
under the pontious pilot he suffered death and was buried and rose again on
24:29
the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and
24:34
is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his
24:41
kingdom will have no end and I believe in the Holy Spirit the Lord The Giver of
24:46
Life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son
24:51
is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets and I believe in
24:56
one holy Catholic and Apostolic church I confess one baptism for the Forgiveness

of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen please be
