18:13
a reading from the holy Gospel According to St Matthew glory to you Jesus told
18:19
his disciples this Parable a man going on a journey called in his servants and
18:25
entrusted his possessions to them to one he gave five talents to another two and
18:31
to a third one to each according to his ability then he went away immediately
18:37
the one who received five talents went and traded with them and made another five likewise the one who received two
18:44
made another two but the man who received one went off and dug a hole in the ground and buried his master's money
18:51
after a long time the master of those servants came back and settled accounts with them and the one who had received
18:57
five talents came forward bringing the additional five and he said Master you gave me five talents see I have made
19:05
five more and his master said to him well done my good and faithful servant
19:11
since you were faithful in small matters I will give you great responsibilities come share your Master's Joy then the
19:18
one who had received two talents came forward and said Master you gave me two talents see I have made two more and his
19:26
master said to him well done my good faithful servant since you were faithful in small matters I will give you great
19:33
responsibilities come share your Master's Joy then the one who had received the one Talent came forward and
19:39
said master I knew that you were a demanding person harvesting where you did not plant and Gathering where you
19:45
did not scatter so out of fear I went off and buried your talent in the ground here it is back and his master said to
19:53
him in reply you Wicked lazy servant so you knew that I harvest where I did not
19:58
plant and gather where I did not scatter should you not then have put my money in the bank so that I could have got it
20:05
back with interest on my return now then take the talent from him and give it to the one with 10 for everyone who has
20:12
more will be given and he will grow rich but from the one who has not even what he has will be taken away and throw this
20:20
useless servant into the darkness outside where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth the gospel of the Lord
20:29
Jus
20:36
Christ there is a madeup word that my generation created and it's a word word
20:41
that I love and that fits I think very well with the the kind of underlying idea of Our Gospel today and the word is
20:49
adulting right the adulting the process of adulting and it's it kind of sums up
20:54
that experience of you're on your own you're not not really sure how to do any
20:59
of this and you're just trying to figure it out you have no meaningful kind of experience to operate from and so you're
21:06
just adulting you're just figuring it out as you go and it's something I imagine most of us remember from our own
21:12
experience of getting out of college and and kind of just figuring out life and the reason I think that word is so
21:19
important now and so valuable now is if we go back to the time of the
21:24
Gospel the experience of people at that time time was very very predictable four
21:33
or five generations back four or five generations forward everything looked the same people lived in the same house
21:40
you lived in the same town if you wanted to get money if you wanted to make a living you did the same thing there was
21:47
no sense of the unexpected nothing changed quickly even something like the
21:52
fall of the Roman Empire didn't have a daytoday effect effect upon the way that
22:00
people lived their lives now you fast forward say a thousand years from then to 1,000 ad even then two three
22:08
generations back two or three generations forward life looks the same you're in the same job as your
22:14
grandparents were and your grandkids are going to have that same job you're in the same basic area and barring
22:20
something like the black death everything stays the same but then you
22:25
start moving up toward our area and history and boy oh boy is that not the
22:31
case life is not predictable you move up to something like say 100 years ago the
22:37
1920s and now you've got the Industrial Revolution and things are speeding up and things are speeding up and your
22:43
grandparents don't look like they have the answers like they used to and all of a sudden people born in 1890 and people
22:49
born in 1910 have very different lives and if you zoom into our own era in
22:55
history I'm relatively young but but I realized that I was born in the 70s and
23:01
so my parents born in the 50s the way that they lived their lives changed
23:06
dramatically when they turned about 1516 and the 60s show up and there's a
23:11
cultural revolution I turned 1516 suddenly cell phones are a thing that's
23:17
a gigantic change a few years later the internet is a thing a few years after
23:22
that we have the war on terror which was already following on from the drugs epidemic then we have the ubiquity of
23:29
the internet we have smartphones and now it seems like every 3 to 5 years we have
23:35
cultural upheaval such that even people who are in college now are looking back
23:40
and saying back in the day when I was in fifth grade and we all chuckle and laugh and go that wasn't that long ago but
23:47
it's incredibly difficult to figure out what our culture looks like it changes
23:53
so quickly that we're not looking at saying things have been basically the same since my grandparents day and I
24:00
know what to expect and how to use the gifts that God has given me we have to almost on a yearly basis pause start
24:09
that whole prayer over again and say Lord the world is basically a different place now so how do you want me to use
24:15
these gifts and talents you've given me and that was the kind of thing that we would say a sermon a hundred years ago
24:22
on this topic would be relatively boring right you say what gifts and talents do
24:27
you have oh you're a teacher oh you're that person who makes people feel welcome in their home you're the person
24:32
who listens to other people or you have the gift of administration or you have the gift of organization or whatever and
24:39
we simply say that's easy put those things at the service of the lord and there you go but nowadays the world
24:46
moves so quickly we have to ask over and over again Lord the gifts you have given me how do I put them at your service
24:54
what do I even do what is it that you're calling me to do and the
25:00
Temptation is to say either on the one hand I can look at my own gifts and I'm
25:06
just going to decide using my own human wisdom how I can put those into into
25:12
service for the Lord right using my own human wisdom I might say to myself Ryan humph I'm a giant nerd and so I know all
25:20
kinds of stuff about computers and social media so what God wants me to do is write a bunch of computer software
25:25
and spend all of my time posting on Instagram and Facebook that's a great Temptation it's a really bad thing to do
25:33
it's not what God wants I know I've prayed about it and gave up social media four years ago and I'm happy as a clam
25:38
about it but if I use my own human wisdom I can find myself going off in all sorts of weird tangents it's not the
25:46
right idea although it's an easy Temptation the second temptation is even worse which is to say you know I'm just
25:53
going to pick something at random at church and I'm just going to do that and
25:59
if I do that then that'll cover my bases right so you say I'm going to be elector at church and that will cover my bases
26:06
and that's what I'll do for the Lord and that'll just be my big plan and both of those are really the easy way out when
26:14
we look at our gospel today what the Lord is calling forth from us is
26:19
generosity but a generosity that is ordered toward the one who is in
26:25
charge right the the the landowner in the gospel as an analog for God gives to
26:31
these individuals specific gifts talents the word talent we have comes from this
26:37
gospel and he says I want you to put these talents to my service as I kind of go
26:47
away these are the talents I want you to use and in fact the gospel even points
26:53
out that the landowner recognizes that this one has this ability and that one has that ability and so he specifically
27:00
gives these talents to these individuals and the challenge for us the challenge
27:06
for us functionally is not simply let me pray once when I'm young and figure out
27:12
what it is that God wants me to do but let me pray on an ongoing basis what it
27:18
is that God wants me to do we really have to do that uh like I said a
27:24
thousand years ago when nothing ever changed you could do this once when you were 10
27:30
years old and say what does God want for me and everything's going to be the same your whole life but for us now we
27:36
genuinely have to ask ourselves what are the gifts that God can use from me that
27:42
have been given to me in this moment for this moment and the reason I'm bringing
27:48
this up is because even 5 10 years ago when I would have given this sermon on this gospel I would have simply said
27:55
we've got to be more generous make a list of the gifts and talents you have put them at God's service and we're done
28:01
but now any one of us may have put our gifts and services or put put our gifts
28:07
at the service of God 10 years ago and now we're looking up and going well that doesn't exist anymore because the CCD
28:14
program doesn't exist anymore or that doesn't exist anymore because that chair that church doesn't happen anymore or I
28:20
was doing this with that priest but then a new priest came in and he decided to do something totally different or this
28:25
bishop asked me to be part of this organiz ation and now that doesn't exist anymore and as we continue to live in
28:32
this changing world we genuinely have to ask ourselves on an ongoing basis what
28:38
does the Lord want for me today not what does the Lord want for me
28:44
last year or just generically speaking what are the gifts I have and I'll just keep doing the same thing but genuinely
28:51
Lord what do you want from me right now and it's a prayer that matters
28:59
because we are in a world that is absolutely turning over all the time and we could imagine saying you know 15
29:06
years ago when the church was relatively stable I mean if we we go back you know to the the mid 2010s there wasn't a lot
29:14
of you know there was there was chaos to be sure but the church was relatively stable and so you could say you know I'm
29:20
going to just teach teach religion and that's going to that'll be good that'll be something I can do but nowadays we
29:26
look up we gosh you know in this Parish we have whole family catechesis St Paul down the road has a totally different
29:32
model delh High's got a totally different model you have father Taylor down in in Tena who's doing something
29:38
totally different as well you have father bosow up north doing something totally different and all of those things are going to change again in five
29:45
or six years and so it's not just a function of what seems like a good idea it genuinely is a function of discerning
29:53
what the Holy Spirit wants from me today and in order to do that just in a very
29:59
very practical way the way we we stop and ask the Lord for any of these things
30:05
whether it's how can I serve him and what talents he's given me or it's what does the Lord want me to do in terms of
30:10
this job or what does the Lord want me to do in terms of our family discernment
30:16
the asking of what God wants is a relatively straightforward thing and I think our gospel today calls for us
30:23
genuinely to embrace it all it boils down to is setting aside some time and
30:30
we need to set aside one some time to Simply pray and ask the Lord to settle
30:36
our hearts down and to listen to him Lord give me the grace to be able to listen to what you're saying that may
30:43
take a few minutes it may take a long time but it's something that we need to do and it requires some practice to
30:49
allow our minds to quiet a bit and then we simply need to bring that question to the Lord Lord what is it that you want
30:56
me to do and let's take a relatively silly question as an example I've got to buy a new car some point in the next few
31:03
months God Bless America and so I've got to buy a new car and so Lord what kind of car do you want me to buy now it's
31:10
relatively easy for me because I don't have a lot of money so I'm going to buy a car that costs about this much and that's only about three cars and one of
31:16
them's got to fit in the garage so I can't get a long one I can't get you know so it's a really kind of a simple thing for me but I could I could
31:22
theoretically put myself into a situation and say Lord what kind of car should I buy should I buy a beat up
31:28
junker because that's more humble and more simple should I buy something that's got a warranty that lasts forever
31:34
because that's important too should I buy something that's this way or that way should I rent something I can't
31:39
really afford because I want an Aston Martin I'm not lying I would really like to own an Aston Martin this is a great
31:45
thing that I have given up in being a priest I want to drive James Bond's car never going to happen but boy do I want
31:52
it and if I bankrupted myself I could rent one it could happen I looked at the price is online a few months ago this is
31:59
a bad idea but this is in the list and right Lord is word should I absolutely bankrupt myself to drive an Aston Martin
32:04
what do you want and then simply I need to put the question before the Lord and I need to
32:10
wait and I'm not expecting the Lord to talk to me and say don't buy the Aston Martin what I am expecting is to have
32:19
the Lord move my heart in a certain direction right which is why it can't just happen one day it needs to happen
32:26
over and over again I need to give myself some quiet time I need to ask the Lord the question and slowly the Lord
32:33
confirms in me the answer this is how I discerned becoming a priest it's how plenty of other people I've met and
32:39
encountered and worked with over the course of time have decided that this one is the one they should marry or they
32:44
should go to this college or yes they should buy this car or take this job it's by allowing the Lord room within us
32:53
to confirm something now there are other components as well there's the need to be courageous there's the need to be
32:59
willing to risk there's the re there's the need to have faith which is trust that God is revealing himself truly but
33:05
at the end of the day this question of discerning is at the absolute heart of Our Gospel today because it's not just a
33:13
function of generosity the Lord is asking of us he is genuinely asking us to put the gifts and talents he has
33:20
given us for this moment into effect and it's more challenging than it has been
33:26
in the past but it is not beyond the Holy Spirit With God all things are
33:31
possible and so every single one of us really does need to have the courage to
33:37
pause and say Lord what do you want me to do with the gifts and talents you've given me right now in the craziness of
33:45
the world in which we live because the Lord may very well say like he said to Mother Angelica I want you to go off and
33:52
start a television network Mother Angelica could not literally could could not set the time on the VCR and God says
34:00
to her go start a television network how ridiculous at the same time any one of
34:07
us may have some great effort in social media and the Lord may very well say I
34:12
want your gift to be something that's much quieter and I want you to back off of all that garbage and turn your
34:18
attention to this and both of those are important both of those are good and both of those
34:25
require a certain certain sense of trust in God and a willingness to risk and so we have to ask the Lord not
34:33
simply ourselves but the Lord what gifts do you want me to use of the talents
34:41
that you've given me what gifts do you want me to use at this moment in this
34:47
situation of my life because that's the only way we can fully be available to God not for ourselves but for our
34:54
community for others St Teresa vava famously said Christ has no hands on
34:59
Earth but ours Christ has no feet on Earth but ours the gifts we are given
35:05
are not for us they are from God for our Christian Community and so let us have
35:11
the courage and the love of that Christian Community to ask the Lord in honesty what do you want and then the
35:18
courage to follow through in the name of the father and the son and the holy spirit
35:25
amen I believe in one God the Father the
35:33
Almighty maker of heaven and Earth of all things visible and invisible I
35:39
believe in one Lord Jesus Christ the only begotten Son of God born of the
35:45
father before all ages God from God light from light true God from true God
35:52
begotten not made substantial with the father all things were made and for us
35:59
men for our Salvation he came down from heav and by the Holy Spirit incarn
36:06
virginy and became for our sake he was crucified under PTI pilot he suffered
36:13
death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the
36:18
scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory judge
36:26
the living and his kingdom will have no end I believe in the Holy Spirit the Lord The
36:33
Giver of Life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father
36:38
and the son is adored and glorified he has spoken through the prophets I
36:43
believe in one Holy Catholic and Apostolic church I confess one baptism
36:48
for the Forgiveness of and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen
36:56
now let us bring our prayers and our needs before the Lord for our faith family living and deceased for whom this
37:02
mass is offered let us pray to the Lord Lord here our pray for believers who
37:07

this sacred mystery humbly imploring oh Lord that what your son commanded us to do in memory of him may bring us growth
55:03
in charity through Christ Our Lord amen I do want to extend a very warm welcome
55:08
to guests and visitors who are here with us please know you do have a spiritual home here at St Ed whenever you're here we're very very happy to have you uh we
55:14
do have a potluck social next door we'd love to have you join us for that there's always plenty of food uh so we'd
55:19
love to have you come by and join us for that also please be aware that it is Thanksgiving as you all know so we do
55:25
hope you have a lovely Thanksgiving but we are not going to be having mass at the nursing home on Thursday because it
55:31
always ends up being a little too chaotic uh and so we will have our ordinary schedule but we will not have mass on Thursday also please note that
55:38
the angel tree has been pushed back by one week uh due to some just random issues we had to have so we will not
55:44
have the angel tree out this weekend it will in fact be next weekend that will be available uh so we hope that you'll
55:51
be able to take advantage of that when the time comes also and finally if you are finding yourself just a little
55:56
off-kilter and very nervous it's because everybody is 3 in closer to me except
56:02
coach we had to we we moved the pews into place to make the back door a little bit less bump into the Pew kind
56:08
of situation and so a handful of these pews the second and third Pew on each side are now 3 inches shorter and so
56:15
everybody in the church is three inches closer to me that's why you're so freaked out it's okay you're going to
56:20
get on with it it's no problem just deep breaths all around uh but thank you to those who did that that's it it's really
56:26
going to help us a lot from the we actually managed to move the bank of pews back almost 9 in just from people
56:33
sitting down and falling into the pews and the whole thing moving back and that was clogging up the door so we've been
56:40
able to put some bolts in and keep everything where it is but it does mean that no matter how hard you try you're not going to be able to push back from
56:46
me you're going to be right where you are for a long time makes me very happy makes you nervous that's fine again we'd
56:52
love you to come by for the social next door if we don't see you then have a wonderful Thanksgiving and we'll hopefully see you again next time the
56:59
Lord be with you your and may almighty God bless you the Father the Son and the Holy Spirit go in
57:07
peace and let us
57:23
ask
57:34
I
