one of my favorite authors of English author named J.R Tolkien wrote a reimagining of the creation of the World

by describing it as God having created a perfect song a perfect piece of music

and the angels then being responsible for creating that music playing singing

that music what have you and he imagines the fall of Satan then as the devil

basically saying I know this is the song you want me to sing but I'm going to sing my own Melody I'm going to create

my own piece of music and God initially responds to that by saying well it's not

going to be a song anymore now it's going to be an orchestra and I'm going to incorporate all the music you've

created and make it good and beautiful again and I'm going to make it even better than it would have been at the

beginning but then when Satan continues to do his own thing the devil basically

whips him around a little bit or God whips him around a little bit and says listen I'm going to let your nonsense

endure but only for the reason that you the other angels and everybody else will be

able to look and to recognize that everything in this world comes from me

and only from me and that everything in this world that lasts

returns to me and only to me and that's how God casts Satan in a certain sense

Out of Heaven so to speak and that resonates strongly with the idea that

everything in our world then has a certain bitter sweetness a certain Discord to it and we see it in every

piece of the Christmas story which has joy and a certain amount of stripe

Strife rather wrapped up together Jesus is conceived by the Holy Spirit but the

gossipy people of Nazareth are only looking to talk about what could have been Mary's adultery Mary's cousin gets

pregnant miraculously but her husband lacks faith and is struck mute just when

it's time for Jesus to be born we have a Government Census that requires Joseph and Mary to travel the joyful birth of

Jesus happens not at home but in a stable an angel appears to Joseph and says hey pick up shop and move somewhere

else right as that's the joy of Christmas is happening even the wonderful scene that will have an
25:40
epiphany where the Persian scientists recognize that Jupiter is for some reason inside of Virgo for longer than

he should be and then Leo comes into the inner planets come and then the sun and the moon are going to line up on such

and such a day and so they gas up the camel and drive on their way to get to Jerusalem and just as all this wonderful

stuff is coming together the king makes a mess of the whole thing all of the

good and wonderful and joyful and amazing aspects of that story are all wrapped up

in bitter sweetness in moments of sadness and we stop and say well why why

is that why does God allow this imperfection to exist within the context

of perfection because after all if you or I had decided how this was going to play out we would have got it right we

would have had it be good everything would have been just wonderful and there wouldn't have been any of this bizarre

negative stuff that looks like it happened outside of God's control and yet no matter how many times we
26:44
think about it the only reasonable response is that God did it that way on
26:49
purpose that God allows evil and suffering in this world for some greater
26:55
reason because it doesn't make sense in any other way God tells us he has set up

a perfect place for us in heaven that is even better than Eden could have been
27:07
and is certainly better than this mess of a world and so we are left with the simple reality that there must be some
27:13
value some good some reason for the difficulties and trials that we have and
27:19
in fact that resonates within us because we understand that anything worth doing costs us right
27:27
I mean our student athletes for example these kids want to be good athletes so what does that require of them well it
27:34
means that they've got to get up all summer in the hot and go work out in the gym that smells like feet for five or
27:40
six hours because that's what it costs if we want to be a good musician we've got to spend hours playing boring little
27:47
exercises on the piano in order to become a good musician the same thing is true of language or any skill or any art
27:55
we want to learn there's a cost that comes from it and so we understand
28:00
somewhere deep down within us that this is the reality that all joy in this world is wrapped up with a certain
28:07
amount of difficulty and trial I mean even the most wonderful family Christmas overwhelming with joy we get to the end
28:15
of it and we say this has been great but now we got to wait a year before we
28:20
can do it again no matter how good something is in this world it always seems to be tied
28:27
together with a certain amount of difficulty and from the beginning the Lord seems to have done that he attaches
28:33
the blessings of this world to trials in this world and the only reasonable kind
28:39
of thing that we can take from that the only reasonable conclusion we can draw is that he does this to point us Beyond
28:48
this world to point us to something better and in fact Jesus tells us in the
28:54
gospel that's what he's doing he pulls the apostles aside and he says hey
28:59
I have created a heaven for you and in this Heaven There are many mansions and

one of them is is this specifically designed for you and he says in fact where I'm going to this Heaven you
29:13
already know the way and the apostles are caught off guard and they go well what do you mean and Thomas looks and
29:20
says what how can we know the way we don't even know where you're going how can we possibly know the way to get
29:26
there and then Jesus hits them I am the way
29:32
and the truth and the life and Christmas ultimately boils down and
29:39
becomes about Jesus the way the truth and the life and his entry into the
29:46
world and his entry into our hearts not just for the purpose of some personal
29:52
connection with him but for something infinitely greater for a worship of God
29:57
as he is for a love of God as he is and just like in tolkien's story everything

in this world comes from the Lord and only from the Lord and everything that matters returns to the Lord and only to
30:13
the Lord and so if I'm looking for joy and happiness I can find it in this life
30:19
but only at its source and if I'm looking for peace and love in
30:25
this life I can find it but only at its source

and that's why there's always a bit of bitterness in the joy because when we
30:37
come to the Lord directly we find this sense of something incredible but the Lord says for now you can only
30:45
find it at its source you can only find it by coming near to me and because we are not perfectly United to the Lord

there's a certain amount of bitterness there's a certain amount of imperfection no matter how much effort we make
30:58
because of course the Lord knows that he has created a better place for us and so

if we're looking for that source of Grace and this life and of joy and Eternity we can find it but we can only
31:11
find it if we set aside those things that separate us from the love of God and of course Saint Paul says nothing

can separate us from the love of God except my own stuff and so if I come to
31:24
the Lord with expectations if I come to the Lord with instructions if I come to the Lord and say Lord this is how you

need to move in my heart all I'm doing is putting a limitation upon what God can and will do but if I

take that away and I come to the Lord as he is without expectation without demand

without limiting my own perspective and I simply say Lord come into my life
31:52
however you want to do it then it starts to make sense

I mean there are three Angels right in the in the story The Christmas Story we have the angel that talks to Mary at the

Annunciation the angel Gabriel who tells her that she will bear the Messiah we have the angel that gives Joseph his

three dreams and we have the angel who speaks to the Shepherds and tells them that there is
32:17
great news of wonderful joy and each of those three Angels asks the person

they're talking to to do something insane it's ludicrous Gabriel looks at
32:29
Mary and says I want you to have a child and she goes can't do it don't have the requisites for it he goes oh no it's
32:35
going to be great it'll be a hoot you're going to Bear the Messiah you're going to name him Jesus and she's like what
32:41
are you talking about and then the angel appears to Joseph and says hey this lady
32:46
who looks like she's been knocked up accidentally you're gonna marry her it'll be a hoot and he's going what are
32:51
you talking about and then another Angel appears again and says oh by the way go ahead and just shut your business down

and move to Egypt for a couple of years it'll be a hoot and Joseph is going this is insane and of course the Shepherds

whose job it is to prevent wolves from eating their sheep get told hey take a

break in the middle of the night go to the random stable down the road and you'll find a child laying in a pig

trough and they're going this is insane it's ludicrous why would I do that

but in each case the person despite having no good reason to do it

simply says well God is God I'm not so if God wants me to do that I'll do it if

God says that he the holy spirit is going to come upon me and I'm going to Bear the Messiah let it be done unto me

according to your word if God wants me to pick my family up and move to Egypt of all places fine I'll put gas in the

donkey if the Lord says to us just leave these sheep behind and that they're an angel protect them from being eaten by

Wolves then I'll go down to the random stable and see what's going on down there and it is that yes despite all the

craziness and expectations that makes those moments the joyful moments they

are and so the more that we are willing simply to trust the Lord and say Lord if

you make clear to me what it is you want I will do it the more likely we are to find the peace and joy and happiness of

the season and the less bitterness that will come with it but the more we insist on the Lord doing it this way or that

way or the the other way the more that bitterness is going to be Amplified because it simply is the way it is that

God is God and I am not and the more freely and wonderfully I accept that
34:38
that's a good thing that's not a limitation at all that is a blessing of the highest order then the more peace

and joy and goodness flows into me because God wants
34:51
wants to be known by us just as the gospel says no one has seen God

but the sun has revealed him because God wants to be revealed to us he wants us

to know him and to love him and to find in him the joys that are in this life

and in heaven and the more that we are willing to set aside our own stuff

the more we are willing to set aside as the angel didn't in that story of Tolkien at the beginning and say I'm

going to sing my own song The more we put that away the more we can be inundated with the merciful and joyful

love of God and that ultimately is what the Lord asks of us at Christmas time in
