while these negotiations with Ottawa are
0:02
ongoing our government will appoint and
0:04
I will chair the Alberta Next panel This
0:07
panel will be composed of some of our
0:09
best and brightest judicial academic and
0:11
economic minds to join with me in a
0:13
series of in-person and online town
0:15
halls to discuss Alberta's future in
0:17
Canada and specifically what next steps
0:20
we can take as a province to better
0:22
protect Alberta from any current or
0:24
future hostile policies of the federal
0:26
government Details of the membership and
0:29
scope of that panel will be released in
0:31
the coming
0:32
weeks After the work of the panel is
0:34
finished it is likely we will place some
0:36
of the more popular ideas discussed with
0:38
the panel to a provincial referendum so
0:41
that all Albertans can vote on them
0:43
sometime in
0:45
2026 To be clear from the outset our
0:48
government will not be putting a vote on
0:50
separation from Canada on the referendum
0:53
ballot However if there is a successful
0:56
citizen-led referendum petition that is
0:58
able to gather the requisite number of
1:00
signatures requesting such a question to
1:02
be put on a referendum our government
1:05
will respect the democratic process and
1:08
include that question on the 2026
1:10
provincial referendum ballot as well
1:21
I also want to state unequivocally that
1:23
as premier I'm entirely committed to
1:25
protecting upholding and honoring the
1:27
inherent rights of First Nations Matei
1:30
and Inuit peoples
1:32
Therefore any citizen initiated
1:34
referendum question must not violate the
1:36
constitutional rights of first nations
1:38
matei and Inuit peoples and must uphold
1:41
and honor honor treaties 6,7 and 8
1:44
should any referendum question ever pass
1:47
This is
1:48
non-negotiable Now let's talk about the
1:50
elephant in the room that being
1:52
separation We are well aware that there
1:55
is a large and growing number of
1:57
Albertans that have lost hope in Alberta
1:59
having a free and prosperous future as a
2:02
part of Canada Many of these Albertans
2:04
are organizing petitions to trigger a
2:06
citizen initiated referendum as I
2:08
mentioned earlier The vast majority of
2:10
these individuals are not fringe voices
2:13
to be marginalized or vilified They are
2:15
loyal Albertans They're quite literally
2:18
our friends and neighbors who've just
2:20
had enough of having their livelihoods
2:23
and prosperity attacked by a hostile
2:25
federal government They're frustrated
2:27
and they have every reason to be I want
2:30
to talk directly to those Albertans I
2:32
know how frustrated so many of you have
2:34
become with our country and the feeling
2:36
of having politicians living thousands
2:38
of miles away passing laws and rules
2:39
that have cost you your loved ones jobs
2:42
careers dreams and opportunities for a
2:45
brighter future As most Albertans know I
2:47
have repeatedly stated I do not support
2:49
Alberta separating from Canada I
2:52
personally still have hope that there is
2:54
a path forward for a strong and
2:56
sovereign Alberta within a united
