EV mandate isn't about the environment, but about Brookfield's bottom line?
Jun 18, 2025
You don't have to allow Canadians to buy one type of vehicle by banning their ability to buy the ones that they actually want. You know, this is raising a lot of questions. Canadians, auto workers, Ford, GM, they all don't want the EV mandate, but the prime ministers intent on pushing it through. Why? Well right before becoming Prime Minister he was chair of Brookfield and he advocated for a ban on gas powered cars. Brookfield is heavily invested in the EV supply chain. If this Prime Minister refuses to reveal his financial interests or self-admitted conflicts, isn't it true that this isn't about the environment, this is about the bottom line for Brookfield?

the honorable leader of the opposition
0:06
this Liberal government is doubling down
0:08
on its insane ban on gas powered
0:11
vehicles the latest Liberal overreach
0:13
kicks in next year and soon your
0:15
favorite car truck and van will be
0:18
illegal but this mandate is already
0:20
driving up prices the average price of a
0:22
new car is 67,000 used cars are
0:24
approaching 40,000 and this Liberal
0:27
mandate will add an additional $20,000
0:30
per vehicle they've already priced
0:32
working Canadians out of the housing
0:34
market why are they pricing working
0:36
Canadians out of the ability to buy a
0:38
vehicle as well
0:40
the honorable Minister of the
0:41
Environment and Climate Change mr
0:43
speaker first let's start with the facts
0:45
which is there is no ban on gas powered
0:48
vehicles but more to the point let's
0:51
also say once again we're seeing a
0:54
conservatives talking down one of our
0:56
most important industries employing
0:58
hardworking auto workers in our country
1:02
at the very moment that we're facing
1:04
tariff threats from the United States i
1:06
find it rich that they are choosing to
1:09
take this position instead of talking up
1:10
a growing and important industry we
1:12
stand with our auto
1:15
leader of the opposition
1:17
there absolutely is a ban it starts to
1:20
come into effect next year and it will
1:23
absolutely devastate the auto sector
1:25
here in Canada the auto sector is
1:27
already under fire from unjustified US
1:30
tariffs and the PM's inability to get a
1:32
deal but GM Ford are all saying that
1:36
this ban will kill jobs in fact a new
1:38
report says that this ban on gas powered
1:40
vehicles will kill 90,000 auto jobs
1:43
instead of sending even more jobs to the
1:46
US why not end the ban on gas powered
1:49
vehicles and let Canadians decide what
1:51
kind of vehicle they want to buy
1:53
the Honorable Minister of the
1:55
Environment and Climate Change mr
1:57
speaker it's nice to hear that they're
1:59
finally recognizing that we we're
2:01
talking about an industry that's facing
2:03
unjustified terrorists from the United
2:05
States but let's also talk about how our
2:08
auto sector is important we need to
2:11
support it in this moment it's creating
2:13
good paying union jobs in our country an
2:16
EV standard actually makes sure that new
2:20
electric vehicles are available to
2:21
Canadians they're cheaper to operate
2:23
they're cheaper on upkeep and Canadians
2:26
want to be able to have access the
2:28
honorable leader of the opposition
2:31
you don't have to allow Canadians to buy
2:34
one type of vehicle by banning their
2:36
ability to buy the ones that they
2:38
actually want
2:40
but you know this is raising a lot of
2:42
questions canadians auto workers Ford GM
2:45
they all don't want the EV mandate but
2:48
the prime minister is intent on pushing
2:49
it through why well right before
2:51
becoming prime minister he was chair of
2:53
Brookfield and he advocated for a ban on
2:55
gas powered cars brookfield is heavily
2:58
invested in the EV supply chain yet this
3:00
prime minister refuses to reveal his
3:02
financial interests or self-admitted
3:04
conflicts isn't it true that this isn't
3:05
about the environment this is about the
3:07
bottom line for Brookfield
3:13
the honorable minister uh for artificial
3:16
intelligence we're in a trade war
3:17
launched by the United States that's
3:19
targeting our auto workers and our auto
3:21
sector make no mistake we will fight for
3:24
every job and every worker we have
3:26
invested in the auto sector including
3:28
the EV sector to build good jobs in
3:31
places like St thomas where the Amino
3:33
Corp is employing people this government
3:36
will always invest in workers and make
3:39
sure that the auto industry is growing
3:43
resilient and uh successful
3:48
the honorable member for Shabbul Shaal
3:51
mr speaker every time this Liberal
3:54
government proposes new environmental
3:56
measures it's either a tax or a
3:59
requirement they want to ban the sale of
4:01
gas-powered vehicles which will cost
4:04
Canadians 50,000 jobs they want to
4:07
punish Quebecers who choose a
4:08
gas-powered vehicle by imposing a
4:11
$20,000 price hike even though they know
4:13
the average price of a new car is
4:15
already $67,000
4:17
why does the prime minister want to take
4:19
away Canadians choice the honorable
4:22
minister of the environment mr speaker
4:24
let's begin by saying we're not banning
4:26
those vehicles secondly in Quebec in his
4:30
writing there are already regulations to
4:34
ensure that Quebecers have access to EVs
4:38
so even in his writing
4:41
there are already regulations in place
4:43
the honorable member for Shalabu Otal
4:47
I'd like to tell the minister that in
4:49
Quebec people are already saying this
4:51
won't work
4:53
the banning gas powered cars after 2035
4:57
won't work it's a question of choice not
5:00
control what we're seeing is the Liberal
5:02
government trying to control Canadians
5:05
but many people can't afford or can't
5:08
use or simply don't want an EV
5:12
tell someone in northern Quebec who
5:14
wants to go hunting or fishing or into
5:16
the woods how are they supposed to do
5:18
that with an EV it's impossible so
5:20
forcing Canadians is not the right way
5:22
to go the honorable environment minister
5:27
Mr speaker once again we are not
5:30
requiring people to buy EVs and we are
5:33
not banning
5:35
combustion engine vehicles but EVs are
5:39
less expensive they're to buy and to
5:42
maintain and Canadians want access to
5:45
EVs so why do they not want Canadians to
5:49
have that choice
5:51
the honorable member for
5:53
Mr speaker that government has already
5:56
tried to control Canadians lives through
5:59
the carbon tax for years what has the
6:03
new prime minister done he scrapped the
6:05
carbon tax because he knew it wasn't
6:07
working we're asking for the same thing
6:09
here stop forcing Canadians to buy EVs
6:13
they want gas powered vehicles they want
6:15
the choice because gas cars work for
6:18
them and uh once again the Liberals are
6:20
making it too expensive for people to
6:23
afford things because of their ideology
6:25
the honorable minister of the
6:26
environment and climate change mr
6:29
speaker this is absurd it's whatever
6:32
anything and everything that we're
6:34
hearing from the other side once again
6:37
we are going to help our auto industry
6:41
workers if the Conservatives
6:47
don't want if they're saying that our
6:49
cars are not good good enough that's
6:52
their choice but on this side of the
6:55
house we will defend our auto industry
