1:37
How's everybody doing today? This nice, sunny, warm, humid Friday. Everybody, welcome to the show
1:49
My name is Mahesh Chan. I'm founder of C Sharp Corner and host of this Growth Mindset Show
1:54
If you are joining us back, welcome back to the show. If you are joining us first time, welcome to the show
2:03
In this show, our focus is really growth mindset and focus around software developers and our C Sharp Corner members
2:11
If you are not a C Sharp Corner member, please check it out. There's a lot of things going on there
2:18
So today I will talk about that, what's going on on C Sharp Corner recently
2:24
There's a lot going on. Atul, how are you? Good morning, everybody. Good morning to the good afternoon. Good evening. Depends on where you are from. Venkat. I see Venkat. I see Atul. Narenda Reddy. Welcome to the show. Let's hang out. We're going to be hanging out here together for an hour. It's 12 o'clock here. 12 o'clock. Good morning. First time of year. Welcome to the show. I hope you like it what we do here
2:51
um so yeah let's get started so what we're going to talk about today today is uh focus on uh
2:58
carrier advice so if you have any questions about your career mostly in software development
3:03
you have questions about growth how to you know i see one of some of the questions i see all the
3:10
time people ask is oh how do i become a software architect oh i have two years experience in dot
3:16
net how do I you know go to the next level or what new technology should I learn in dot net
3:23
oh I'm stuck in a project for so long and I'm not learning new things so all those questions we will
3:29
we will take uh while I'm talking about this but but if you're joining us first time let me explain
3:38
you this show is all about you this show is not for me uh I'm here just to share my experience
3:45
what you know for past 23 24 25 years i have been in it industry mostly in software development
3:53
so if you have any questions and anything on your mind that's where i'm more focused i want to
4:00
help you and answer those questions so if you have any questions start posting them there
4:06
okay we're going to start posting in your comments we take questions live and end of the show if
4:12
you're interested you want to come live hang out in the studio you can also come join live
4:19
so let's get started um it's friday here and i'm sure everywhere it's friday including india asia
4:26
europe and the us it's noon around here outside of philadelphia it's really sunny and and summer
4:33
right now the summer peak summer right so probably 95 degrees and summertime in the US you know things
4:42
really you know they are slow they're slower because a lot of people are on vacation there's
4:47
a lot of sports going on and traveling going on I'm traveling every weekend so every weekend we
4:53
have sports I'm in different town different city today I'm going to travel in the afternoon so
4:59
So that's why you probably see some of the, you know, some Fridays I don't have any shows
5:04
For example, next Friday, I don't think I will have a show. I will be traveling to Atlantic City where we have a weekend tournament on basketball
5:13
So let's start with a few things. Everybody, welcome. I see good morning
5:19
Welcome to the show. Pradeep is here. Deepak is there. Vakas. Bashir is there
5:25
Todd, you're considering your first time from Facebook, joining us from Facebook
5:29
Welcome to the show. If one more thing I ask everybody is if you think you like this show and you are getting any benefit out of this
5:38
you think your friends and co-workers may get benefit out of it. Please, please, please let them know
5:46
Yeah, definitely. Ravi, definitely it's always sunny in Philadelphia. That's not a true statement
5:53
Winter is bad. winter is not that good here but yes right now it's sunny in philadelphia
5:58
oh another one other thing i want to mention here is as your summit so i'm not sure if you
6:07
have seen i'm sure a lot of you have already seen as your summit is doing a fantastic job
6:13
the team is doing fantastic job it's becoming one of the largest conference ever ever when i say ever
6:21
Oh, you see my colors changing? You see my colors changing the video. That's because there's cloud outside, sometimes sunny, sometimes clouds, sometimes that's why you probably see. I'm not doing any magic here. Okay
6:34
So as you submit, I'm very excited about this conference. It's going to be, we were supposed to have this as a two-day conference
6:44
Then we turn it to three-day conference. Then it turned into five-day conference
6:49
Then became seven-day conference. And I have a feeling that we are going to continue to even add more days to this conference
6:56
because there's so many speakers already applying, still applying. and we already have 8,000 sign of registration
7:06
People have registered already, 8,000 registrations already. That's the registration. And imagine live is going to be
7:14
I think it's going to reach 50,000 plus people watching live. So that's something
7:19
Check it out. If you have not registered so far, check out azuresummit azuresummit And you know it going to be exciting so it going to be great great learning experience for everybody So before we take questions we talk about career advice
7:40
a couple of more things I want to cover here is on C-sharp corner we just launched a new feature
7:49
called challenge. If you have not tried that give it a try. Challenges are something fun to test your
7:57
skills. So if you you want to test yourself how good you are in C sharp language there's a C sharp
8:04
challenge. There is a Stratus challenge and there's just I think yesterday we just launched a Java
8:10
challenge. There's going to be Azure challenge. So goal is for every category for example react
8:18
angular c-sharp.net all the as you are we will have couple of challenges and challenge is basically
8:24
simple as fun you just go through these eight or ten or twelve questions and depending on
8:29
skill set you will see you can learn and then you will see how good you are so that's the challenge
8:34
part you check it out c-sharp corner slash challenges and let us know what do you think
8:40
of that we would love to have your any feedback you know a bad good whatever you find any problems
8:46
issues we are always always looking for critics and good good feedback that can help improve the
8:52
platform so with that said we are eight minutes in the show um it looks like more people are
9:00
joining in everybody welcome to the show feel free to post your comments feel free to ask your
9:06
questions no question is a bad question here okay we are not like other communities where
9:10
If you don't know how to ask a question, we don't blast on you
9:15
We don't. Every question is a good question. You can ask any questions
9:20
Not only you can ask career related questions, you can also ask questions about community, questions about jobs, questions about MVP, whatever you have questions
9:30
Just ask. OK, that's what we are here for. And asking questions also makes my job easy and fun because that keeps me engaged
9:39
And I don't have to think about, OK, what are we going to talk about today? Makes sense. All right, Ramakrishnan, welcome to the show
9:46
Hopefully you enjoy the show. So and also on my other side in the studio, I have Simon here who is behind the scene
9:55
We also have our social media team. They're always working behind the scene
10:00
Simon, in our team, you can also jump in, ask your questions as well
10:04
So we'll take all kind of questions today. today is more about just putting any questions related to carry advice
10:16
Hopefully COVID is getting better at your place wherever you are joining us. I know there's cases
10:21
are ups and downs and looks like we are not done with COVID yet. I just saw news this morning that
10:28
COVID cases even in the US now are rising. I thought we were kind of going down and one of
10:34
the challenge is that some people are just not getting vaccinated. We have a lot of vaccine here
10:39
in the U.S. Now you can just walk in anywhere and get vaccinated right away. But there's a certain
10:46
percentage of population. They just, I don't know if they don't believe in it or they ignore it or
10:53
they don't care. They think, oh, I'm healthy. I'm not going to get COVID. I mean, that's great that
11:00
you have the confidence but again this is something where if we are not combined together
11:06
if we are not working together chances are this will still hang around for a while so if you
11:13
can go please please go ahead and try to get the vaccine um so uh hopefully and the good thing with
11:22
that is that it's not about you really it's a it's again dave just said dave welcome to the show get
11:27
the damn shot yes i said get the shot it's not really about you because even though you're healthy
11:34
even though you don't have any symptoms but you could be the transmitter you could be the
11:38
you know conductor who takes the virus from one place one person to pass it to somebody else
11:43
and that person could be somebody elderly somebody who's sick that's that's the that's the problem
11:50
that's the challenge so yes please please go get the shot um one more thing is uh we are always on
12:00
c-sharp corner events and conferences we are always raising money for uh you know helping
12:07
kids children who are in need uh so if you are somebody who are able to donate please go ahead
12:14
and and donate on this conference website we have links everywhere uh so yes i agree uh i agree uh
12:23
thought we have to get vaccine to prevent variant because they want they're going to continue to
12:28
adopt see this this uh cobit is very smart right it's just uh it's just coming over the new forms
12:36
and try to sneak us on so until we get this whole thing 100 done it'll be hard to get rid of it
12:44
so all right let's start the show so we're going to start with the show one of my favorite questions
12:50
which a lot of people are asked some of these questions i have compiled from c-sharp corner
12:56
career advice forums so if you don't know there's we on c-sharp corner we have something called
13:01
career advice forums where you can post any questions ask any questions about your career
13:06
advice and there are a few experts there they're always asking there so one of my my favorite
13:13
question here on this is I need help in choosing .NET technology. So this person he said he's
13:24
two years experience, he's a junior developer, he needs help choosing .NET technology. And as we all
13:31
know that .NET is a big universe. .NET is just not a one platform where you just build one kind of app
13:38
in dotnet you can build all kind of apps you can build windows apps you can build you know mobile
13:43
apps you can build uh web applications you can build services you can build cloud applications
13:50
so and so forth so if you have to learn a new something new in dotnet and make sure you have
13:58
jobs in future and there's a big demand what would that be so if you ask me in this all my feedback
14:04
all comes from what I see in the market, what I read it, and what kind of jobs are available in
14:09
the market. Right now there's plenty of jobs in .NET. If you are a .NET developer, there's big demand
14:16
And as a matter of fact, we can't find, I talk to anybody we can't find in Philadelphia area here
14:22
we can't find enough .NET developers who are, you know, who are good
14:28
So that includes ASP.NET MVC, that includes Blazor, also Azure, Cloud, if you are doing
14:34
doing anything like there's a lot of software being built. If you are building APIs, web APIs, there's a lot of .NET core
14:42
and now probably .NET 5 will be going to be used for that for a while
14:47
So if you are in .NET and you say, you know what
14:51
I want to upgrade myself. So Blazor is something you want to do. We building web APIs Try to build and deploy that in Azure and consume from Azure That something is everything is going to cloud right So Azure is the closest to if you a developer you will find Azure Home
15:08
And also, if you are somebody who is new to Azure, you will get a free account there and there's a free credits available to you too
15:22
So that's something I highly recommend. Other thing I'm seeing a lot is demand is obviously conversion from older .NET to the newer .NET
15:36
Now it's .NET 5. There's .NET Core as well. But now .NET 5 migration is kind of start
15:43
People start paying attention to that because of the performance. And David talked on his show about, you know, he has a show where he talked about .NET 5, how good it is
15:54
and six is coming soon too. So look at that, check it out
15:59
So that's what I would do is probably make sure you have Azure somehow, somewhere in your learning path
16:05
which is important. Get certified, right? Azure has these developer associate and beginners
16:10
all these certification, get certification done. And David just said he's migrating to .NET 6
16:17
And there is a question here. There is a question here. is what percentage of is .NET versus .NET Core
16:27
Well, I think majority of the applications were until now were .NET
16:32
and I don't know the exact number, but if I have to guess
16:36
it's probably going to be a big number like 80 to 20 or even 85 to 15 or even 90 to 10
16:42
It's not net core has not, you know, there's a lot of old applications
16:46
.NET applications running in these big companies, even banks, financial institutions and all that
16:52
They're not converting those, especially if the application was a big Windows monolithic app
16:58
or there's big ESP.NET applications. Even give an example, our C-sharp corner is still in .NET
17:04
We have never converted in .NET Core. It's just a lot of work
17:08
It's just a lot of effort. But we are slowly thinking to migrate to Blazor
17:13
That's what we're going to do. So hopefully this answers the question that if you are in a .NET world, if you want to learn new technology, what should you be learning? That's kind of, that's what my advice would be. And then let's take more questions. Let's take one question from audience now before I go and pick my other questions
17:35
Yes, Dave said he's a good .NET developer. The only challenge we are hiring is that these companies need full-time employees, full-time
17:45
they're hiring for. And obviously they want, I know it's not ideal, but they want somebody who's local
17:52
They want somebody who can go and sit in the meetings and they are not 100% virtual yet
17:58
That's unfortunate. But I see a big trend that there is going to be 40% of workforce now going to be virtual
18:08
60% is going to be in person when everything gets normal. Yep
18:14
All right. So let's take another question from Narendra. He said, is it possible to start and do a startup company while doing your job
18:24
So before I take this answer to this question, everybody who's joining us, welcome to the show
18:30
This show today is we are talking about career advice. So if any questions you have, please feel free to ask
18:37
Just post in the comments here. No question is a bad question
18:41
You can ask any questions. It can be anything. You can ask about even what's behind my back, on my wall, behind my back
18:49
So, yeah, whatever it is, just ask any questions. More questions are good
18:54
So it keeps everybody busy. So let's go back to this startups, right
18:59
So if you are working in a company and you want to do your own startup, so here's the good news, Narendra and bad news
19:06
There's, you know, both sides. Depends on how you see. A lot of startups, companies start this way that people are working already on their jobs and they start this something side by side part time
19:19
Yeah, a lot of people do that. I did that when I started Mindcracker in, you know, 99, 2000
19:27
that's how I did. I was working as an employee. I was young, very young and then side by side I
19:36
start this company. I start the company, start doing some smaller projects and then once the
19:41
company start making enough money then I full-time moved to this my company. Yeah, it's no
19:49
problem doing that. So the only challenge sometimes is that because some startups
19:55
don't have a lot of time so if you have this creative ideas which is very competitive your
20:00
building says something app for food delivery for example and if you do this part-time as a site
20:07
and this is not your primary job what happens there's other people end up building faster and
20:12
launching and then you just end up wasting a lot of time so i see this kind of startups all the time
20:19
i advise startups problem with this approach is that since you're not 100 focused
20:25
you just go too long take too long and things get boring and your company goes nowhere
20:30
I see people work this for five six years and they're going nowhere because they feel like
20:38
they don't want to quit their job they still want to get the salary and they all think like okay I'll
20:43
just build this company and it's going to take off itself this is not really it works it's very hard
20:48
that way I'm not saying it's not possible but it's really hard to get that going because unless you're
20:55
100% focused. So the other approach people do is while they're working at the job, they slowly
21:01
build like a POC or some kind of small concept, an idea that works. And then they go to investors
21:07
They go to investors and say, look, this, I'm working full time. I already built this small
21:13
POC and this idea and concept. It's kind of working. Now I need funding so I can quit my job
21:19
hire more people and then full-time focus on that so that's kind of ideal however raising
21:25
money can be also tricky it's not that easy so depends on what your situation is there are some
21:32
of the things you can do all right so let's take another question here from this uh Todd says I'm
21:41
in Fortune 100 company majority I did Java but my group is using 4.net 4.6.2 with only Windows
21:49
servers in dotnet 5 is more viable than dotnet core yes so 100 and i think dave dave can also
21:55
reply this as well dotnet core is pretty much done there will be no more dotnet core everything
22:01
is going to be dotnet five a good thing with dotnet five is that this is more integrated just
22:07
one dotnet platform for everything including windows um and it's much faster but they they
22:14
They did a lot of those legacy libraries. They did a lot of work on compiler
22:19
They did a lot of work on even the engine. So everything is much faster in 5 I don think it hard to really migrate from 4 to 5 because sometimes if it a Windows I think there should be easily portable options
22:37
And I saw somebody wrote and published that and I did try in one of my applications too
22:42
If you can even just compile your existing same application and just change to .NET 5, you will get a lot of benefit just out of that
22:51
So, yeah, if you have time to move to this .NET 5, that's great
22:58
But if not, then, yeah, you can try to recompile that application in .NET 5 at least
23:02
And if your code base gets to the same, I think all code base works
23:06
It's not they have not deprecated those libraries. Right. So that should work. And also, you know, we were talking on Twitter with Ravi and Dave and all about MAUI
23:20
the new framework coming for apps so it just maui is a new framework in dot net six i believe it's
23:28
just announced where you can just use this to build all kind of applications so you just build
23:33
one code base and it will application will it's kind of building like a hybrid right so when one
23:40
app you just build in this it'll work on windows and mobile and in web as well yeah so that's
23:47
something to think it's too early for mavi i think you know dave was saying there are some issues in
23:51
the template visual switch template but yeah hey if you ask me anything anybody who's building new
23:58
applications in dot net dot net five or even try dot net six because this is much not much
24:04
difference in five and six besides this improvements so it's not something that's going to break
24:09
everything right away so hopefully that answers the question okay let's take more questions from here
24:20
uh and then what we will do is i have some my own questions and then we'll talk a few other things as well too um and then we can also discuss you know
24:29
non-questions as well so you can put anything comments out here simon so here's a question as a computer
24:37
science is to dent how do I choose career path how do I know in advance what career path is good fit
24:43
for me okay that's very good question and I think a lot of students have this question and they they
24:49
always concern and they don't know the direction and the path they go to and we all been through
24:55
that I've been through that I'm sure Dave everybody in the beginning they all go through that
25:00
so if you ask me one thing is very important for you to be happy at your job for long term is
25:13
think of your interest and interest should become inside from you not just what you read
25:21
I see a lot of people talk to young guy and I was like what are you doing like oh I'm doing python
25:27
and why are you doing python because oh everybody's doing python so that's not really what i'm talking
25:33
about when i talk about your interest and your interest it means if you ask yourself deep down
25:39
in which you need to dig in deep sometimes you even don't know what you like to do really what
25:44
kind of applications you like to build are you are you like a ui guys you like to draw create
25:49
things or you're like more like a coder where you just like to solve problems algorithms or you are
25:56
like a database guy you are more better into doing ytics and reporting and engineering from the
26:03
data side what kind of person are you and you may not even know that right away that's fine
26:10
nothing wrong with it just go start with one of anything you want and I think one thing I'll
26:15
I want to really clarify here is that don't don't wait around for example if you like machine
26:23
learning and you say you know what i'm only going to do machine learning don't just wait around you
26:28
can still learn other programming things that's okay to learn data structure that's okay to learn
26:32
even any c-sharp programming because all these combine in the in the big picture when you are
26:38
15 years experience 20 years experience you will need all okay you will need all of it a little bit
26:45
here a little bit there and you will figure it out what you like over time but if you just say
26:51
you know I don't know what to choose and you're just waiting around and there's confusion you
26:56
wanna get out of that just do something whatever the fastest way you can learn anything new okay
27:03
also people ask oh should I do java should I do dot net c sharp it doesn't matter it doesn't
27:09
matter what programming language you choose end of the day you are solving a problem okay so as
27:15
a software engineer or developer you are a problem solver your goal is business comes up with a
27:21
business says oh i have this problem and your goal is to become that solve that problem regardless of
27:28
what programming language what the framework what developer stack you're going to use build the
27:33
solution once you understand the problem solving then everything else becomes easy okay so that's
27:41
what i would focus on more algorithms if you're young algorithms problem solving data data structure
27:47
is always important like how you're going to take the data how everything is important algorithms
27:53
are very important so that's what i would do is pick anything doesn't matter but when you pick a
28:03
company when you pick your very first company and that may actually impact your growth and how fast
28:10
you move is very important the picking the company sometimes you pick a large corporation sometimes
28:17
because a startup sometimes you pick a medium company wherever you pick doesn't matter your
28:22
goal should be the project you're working in is there a learning opportunity there
28:28
are you going to you know work on different things where you can you we are involved in problem
28:33
solving don't just join a big large company where you're put in a corner and nobody's really paying
28:38
attention to just gave you some testing tasks right this happens all the time you are a new guy
28:43
you're just a trainee or you just intern and they'll put you in the corner because nobody
28:47
paying attention to try to get into the team regardless of what company size is where there's
28:53
a lot of learning opportunity let me add one more thing here some people complain that oh i just
29:01
joined this company and they're giving me so much work i can't even handle that if that's the kind
29:07
of company you can find in your early career that's probably the best thing happens to you
29:11
i bet you that's and that's the company you don't want to go to company where they hardly give you
29:16
any work because that's just gonna change your habits and you're just gonna learn bad habits of
29:21
not working hard not solving problem not going through the stress of the solving those problems
29:27
that's important okay and i'm not saying that go join a company where somebody's always yelling at
29:33
you and making you work 24 hours a day. I'm just saying you need to be in a project, in a company, in a team
29:41
where they're giving you more than enough work you can handle in your time, your eight hours a day
29:47
In the long run, what it will do is it will benefit you a lot because you're going to learn how to deal this, how to deal the stress
29:55
and how to handle work pressure. And also, if you want to start your own at some day
29:59
You already have this habit of working hard. Anybody who works hard is successful
30:04
Almost. I can guarantee that. So, that's kind of my personal advice based on my experience
30:12
I would give you is pick a company where you have a lot of learning adversity
30:17
where you have a lot of work, and you try to solve a lot of problems
30:21
where you're really hands-on, not just doing one thing. All right. Hopefully, that answers that question
30:30
let's do more discussions here let's take more questions yeah Simon you got
30:35
anything else let's yeah let's talk about some what's Ravi's talking about
30:40
here is and then we'll take Todd's question Ravi says where's Simon go
30:49
Simon took a break so but in India 90% of companies don't allow to work for
30:58
money apart from the job the way around is to start a startup if name of your
31:04
wife if she's not working okay so you're saying that if you are already have
31:10
full-time job you may have conflicts with the company yeah this is everywhere
31:15
almost right I mean not legally but if company finds out you're doing side job
31:22
yeah that's that's kind of nobody's going to like it so that's best way to
31:27
start companies yeah that's fine too that's fine too anybody can be the owner in the company and
31:34
you can do side works yes and then again continue doing that this is you know important for people
31:40
who don't like their job who don't love it and they want to build their own yeah that's that's
31:44
definitely a way around um all right so let's uh take more questions here i have been working as a
31:53
developer for a couple of years something start my own starting my own do you recommend me a business
31:58
degree before uh there are two questions here right one is that you want to start your own
32:08
business and do you need a business degree um degree is very relative right some unless you're
32:16
trying to become a an employee uh and that most companies require a degree right so for example
32:22
computer science if a company is hiring you chances are they'll be asking for a minimum
32:27
bachelor degree in computer science or application development or whatever um it or computers yeah so
32:36
it's not a bad idea to have a degree if you already have a degree that's a good but i don't think you
32:40
need a business degree to start your own business that's not true nobody cares of you nobody asks
32:45
for my business degrees when you start a business and as a matter of fact most people who are
32:50
entrepreneurs, started their own companies, may not even have a business degree at all
32:56
Yes, a lot of them are computer science people in IT especially if you are. So no, that's you
33:03
don't need a degree, not at all. All right, so but you need experience, right? So if you only
33:11
have two years experience working for somebody and then you go to some other company or person
33:19
to ask for work that's where it'll be a little harder in the beginning because you need to prove
33:25
yourself i need to see for example what have you done i need to see what kind of experience you had
33:30
because biggest thing for me is the risk am i taking risk to give you a project right so if
33:35
you are starting for example software development firm or consulting company if i hire you do you
33:42
have enough experience so it's good to know for more than degrees the experience is more important
33:48
than the degree that's what i'm really trying to explain here uh yeah all right so let's take
33:56
more questions i saw a question from todd um and fear it's gonna be discussion yeah yeah i agree so
34:05
dot says that you know he's uh 55 years old and in there to learn is short because when you're
34:12
under pressure and you learn more work less time yes so productivity and always yes and always
34:19
learning are two important things um waste time is the that's what people don't understand the
34:25
time is probably the most precious thing we ever have which we cannot get it back money yes we can
34:31
everything else we can but time is something that's not going to come so if you you find a way to solve
34:38
the same problem in less time yes very important um and yeah um and you learn over time this is
34:47
something you learn over time right it's not something that will come and today it's just
34:52
a part of the experience as well yeah so definitely agree with that um
34:57
yes we uh so this is a good point right so let's i want to talk this more to a tad just said the
35:05
specialty picks you more than what you choose in my opinion we are at the service of our employers
35:12
yeah so that's another thing right so people don't understand that i see this all the time as well
35:20
when i get this talking to developers in young dumber they think that um they're not growing in
35:28
the company they don't get the growth and they always feel like somebody else's company
35:35
so when you detach yourself from the company and thinking is somebody else's company and I'm not
35:41
saying that you're gonna be a go and slave and work for that company and just don't ask for
35:47
anything that's not questionable I'm saying is that you need to first feel like this is my work
35:52
this is my project this is my company okay first you have to give that part and then if you're not
35:59
getting in return that's a problem right people first expect that company will come and give them
36:05
have come what is company company is a made of people right company self is nothing company is
36:10
made of people people make company so and you are part of that so however people are in the company
36:18
that's what company is right so if you are a part of that and you're feeling like yeah i'm just here
36:23
there to just do work but i'm going to go home and do other things then you cannot also expect that
36:29
company grow or you grow within that company if you don't like the work chances are you just try
36:35
to find your own thing start your own business start consulting become independent there's so
36:39
many options today right now in this today's world where everybody's connected everybody
36:46
almost everybody's worked remote last you know year and a half there's so much out there if you
36:52
have the capabilities if you have the skills if you can offer something better than others you
36:59
have a lot of jobs today doesn't matter if you're a full-time employee you are a consultant
37:04
or you are a you are a you know you know independent contractor doesn't matter
37:12
if you freelancer for example now i see david's comments all the time right david's on twitter
37:18
all the time, good friend, David's show is tomorrow by the way, if you
37:22
are interested, you don't know what David's show is maybe Simon can put a link here so David is posting that nobody hiring He having a hard time finding a job and he telling how bad these companies are
37:37
David, I love you. You know that. But here's my problem, right? If you already start complaining about the companies right away, good or bad
37:44
chances are those companies are going to ignore you. It's not that they're not a good company or bad companies
37:50
because they sometimes as a company, you feel like that you're afraid of that's taking hiring the person who can be the let's call it
38:01
whistleblower right so i'm just giving my opinion that if uh if it's like sometimes you are a good
38:10
guy but nobody wants you because they are afraid that this is a good guy isn't going to say right
38:15
things about us and it's going to basically blow up on our face because we we don't know we are
38:21
doing everything right with. So that's kind of, that could be something you need to think when
38:26
you're going for a company that you may be doing the right thing, but you have to also make sure
38:32
if you're trying to get a job, you need to make sure that what company wants, not what you want
38:37
And I'm not saying that you should not be saying what you want, but who's in the need? Is that you
38:44
or the company? If you need a job, you need to figure it out. What are you giving offering to
38:50
company so they can hire you but if you are make yourself good enough expert in some kind of niche
38:57
market that company wants you regardless then you can say whatever you want because now they want
39:02
you so it's other way around it's all supply and demand right it's all supply and demand so
39:10
that's where i kind of get you know keep sometimes developers and that's where i disagree with some
39:19
people out there that they just complain they complain a lot about their company about their
39:28
boss about their job but here's the thing why are you complaining there's so much other options are
39:37
out there they're better if you think you're not happy here in this company if you think you're not
39:42
happy with your boss go find something that's where you can be happy that's where they will
39:47
they will value your expertise, they will value your opinion, they will value you
39:52
Right? There's so many options out there. You should not just sit around and complain because
39:57
to me anybody who complains is like why are you complaining? Just go make sure
40:05
get better or something specialized in the field where people then come after you
40:12
that's where i've been my philosophy has always been make yourself you know either expert in one
40:18
field or you know start writing articles start speaking at the conferences and wherever says wow
40:24
this guy's an expert i want this for our project guess what then you can put your own terms so
40:31
that's that's the way approach and then you don't need to complain right because you know that what
40:36
you're offering and they will listen to you and most people are you know like you see a lot of
40:42
these mvps these are microsoft digital directors that's how they are most of them they are good
40:46
enough that companies are always after them so they don't need to really go after the jobs so
40:52
that's kind of my view and how do you do that well you continue learning new things you continue
40:59
improving yourself you continue you know speaking and promoting yourself selling yourself
41:04
other day on C-Sharp Corners growth C-Sharp live show we just launched another live show called
41:12
seven minutes of selling and I found it fascinating it's not even done by software developer it's not
41:19
for software developers for everybody so the the person who's doing is can call him good friend of
41:25
mine Colin Lake he his background is financial in sales right but we can also apply that in our
41:32
lives as software developers we can also learn from that how to sell ourselves how to sell our
41:38
expertise how to sell our you know um experience we had so a lot of is selling too from software
41:46
developer side we you know we are not good we don't sell good ourselves right we are kind of
41:52
you know what to do we know how to do but we're not a good sales sales people so becoming good
41:58
salespeople is also can get you more out of your own what you have right now you can get a better
42:05
salary you can probably get a better project you can get growth and raise in the company and you
42:10
can even move higher in the level so that's another you can think of sales and sales also
42:15
comes means communications communication is probably has to be the most important part of
42:21
our lives regardless of personal professional or anything right if you're looking for growth
42:26
so I always you know my background is program I started as a coder so you know we are not good
42:33
in communication we don't pay attention we just start building applications writing code
42:37
but people who are move who moves faster in the ladder and become more you know senior positions
42:44
are the one better communicator not the better coders okay so that's how you have to think what
42:49
you want in life if you are happy in your life being coding that's great if you want to say you
42:55
know I want more I want this I want this then you have to figure it out so that's kind of my
43:02
it was a long long discussion on one topic but yeah again you have to know your yourself
43:11
and then what you want and then how do you get that and that's where you know people like few
43:17
people like Dave David we are like always telling that you know I trust me I fight with a lot of
43:23
companies because I tell them what I feel like and I like you guys doing this stupid bullshit job
43:28
right that's all those things I said this is nonsense and then we get in trouble but I don't
43:33
want you to get in trouble so you know I you know David I we can do that we already been doing this
43:40
so long but you know if you are trying to grow within a company you need to understand what
43:47
you have to do or say and also show to move higher in the ladder
43:54
All right. So let's change the topic. Let's find some other questions. And then I have some more questions here as well
44:01
And one of my questions I'm going to talk about is how to become an architect
44:05
And there's a lot of software developers ask that question. And I'm happy to get some feedback from you
44:11
And David, if you want to jump in in the show for last 10 minutes, I'm happy to have you in the in the studio here. We can talk more about the you know architect and
44:22
code quality and dotnet 5 and anything else. Hopefully you're awake there it's in it's a
44:27
little early there in California. All right so everybody who's joining us here I see more people
44:37
join welcome to the show. As you know this is a growth mindset show but today we are talking
44:42
about career advice, general tic tac, jobs, growth. It's 15 more minutes to go. If you have any questions, feel free to ask those questions
44:52
You want to hang out with me in the studio come join me in the studio behind the scene and get on the screen Simon just posted a URL so Simon one thing I don understand is I thought okay so you posting this
45:05
comment so if I'm on YouTube I can just click on comment to get in the studio
45:10
okay I get that's okay that works that works I did not know that because I yeah
45:17
I saw the comment. All right. So any more questions? I see more questions from Venkat here. You want to take some more questions
45:29
I like, yeah, there's a lot of questions. Can we take a few more questions here? But I also like, I'll take your comments
45:37
Dave, let's create a product together. I think that's a great idea
45:41
That's a fantastic idea because looks like some of guys, you know
45:45
As you know, you definitely don't like to work for a company. The best way now to do is figure out your own thing that you love to do and then you
45:53
can enjoy that. I think I'm in with this thing. Let's do something
45:57
I agree. Let's take some questions here. Wenkat's question is, how to build a new capability in a company
46:06
What are the things to consider? I'm not sure really what this question is
46:11
It's not clear. So maybe you mean, are you the in charge in the company who are introducing new capabilities
46:21
Is that what it is? Or are you just trying to introduce a new technology to your team
46:29
For example, then that's just more like a learning curve. So maybe you can elaborate this question more
46:36
I'm not sure. Sorry, unfortunately, I didn't get the question. Do you think AI is gonna take our jobs in the future
46:51
Some jobs yes, but it doesn't mean see if you go back in 20 30 years 40 years back
47:00
I remember I was in India and we had a president my favorite president he was a farmer when I was a
47:06
a young child. Since he was a farming background, he wasn't too happy with the computers. He
47:13
said when computers will come, they will take all farmers' jobs and farmers will have no
47:18
jobs. The president, the prime minister's name was Chaudhich Ransi. And I was a child
47:25
there and I kind of agreed with him. But a few hours later, other prime minister came
47:30
and he introduced computers to the country. I don't think it has impacted any jobs for farmers
47:39
even though computers were introduced. And then recently there's newer technologies coming
47:45
and some jobs obviously disappear. For example, right now electric vehicles are coming
47:51
When electrical vehicles are coming, there's not going to be jobs for coal miners
47:55
or for gasoline companies and all that. That's obvious. but there's going to be more jobs in electric vehicle space
48:04
It's a shift, it changes, right? Same thing with AI. When AI comes, this may take some of the automation jobs, yes
48:12
but it will create more new jobs. So who benefit from that
48:17
People who are always learning and adapting are the one who always gets benefit from it
48:22
So if you make yourself adaptable to any environment and learn new things and keeping yourself upgradable
48:29
there will always be job but i don't think ai is not something that can tomorrow wake up
48:35
and say hey i'll do everything for you guys now you just get out of here there's no job
48:39
that's not going to happen um so yeah let's look at right now there's so many jobs out there if
48:46
you have skills you have capabilities you're a hard worker there's so many jobs um in the u.s
48:53
we can't find enough people right now in any industry that's just it's just uh something
48:58
crazy happening nobody's thought of it um all right let's put more questions here
49:05
uh it's not illegal so if you start your own company on your name while working in a company
49:14
uh yeah i mean this you have to look at your contract i don't think it's illegal but you have
49:21
to look at your contract um i think in any country you can start your own company while you're working
49:28
but you cannot be doing same job or similar space you have a something called non-compete
49:37
so non-compete agreement is very important because it says if you are working in a software
49:42
consulting company you cannot go and start your own software company the consulting company that's
49:48
illegal that's kind of against the the contract you have signed with the company and they can
49:53
actually go and sue you. I've seen this many times. Let me repeat this again. So there is
50:00
something called non-compete agreement which you are going to sign when you become an employee
50:05
So it says that you cannot start similar company, you cannot go to same clients, sometimes it even
50:13
says you cannot start a company within so many miles of that company, not only while you are
50:20
working there or even after you leave a job so most companies will have a contract for you know
50:26
it's called non-compete where it will say if you work without join you join this company for first
50:33
after you've done that with the job not when what is your job after you've done with the job within
50:38
for next three years after that you cannot start a similar company or similar space or even in
50:45
similar industry you cannot be in same industry i have seen non-complete agreement where
50:51
if you sign i cannot start or get a client in say philadelphia area within like 50 miles of radius
50:59
because i'm working on them or sometimes says we are a bank you cannot work for next three years
51:05
after you've done with us for next three years you cannot work with any client that's in banking
51:10
industry so you have to look at your contract but yes it's you cannot start seeing the same
51:16
industry business if you're working in a company because that's against again your company you're competing with the same business
51:27
um all right let's take more questions here uh any more questions no while we're waiting on the questions is anybody joining behind the scene
51:38
What's going on David, you around? All right, so hopefully that answered the question
51:47
We only have nine more minutes left. So let's put my favorite question is that I have few more questions came from C-sharp
51:59
corner forums. What is the most demanding and high paying technology? This is one of the questions I picked up from the forums
52:07
What is the most demanding and high paying technology of today? So right now, if you look at the job trends and salaries and demand, the biggest demand
52:21
right now is the cloud and anything in the cloud cloud migration digital transformation AI machine learning data science uh those are some of the bigger fields with other many others right that that the most
52:37
demanding right now is if um so if you're looking for a job in next year or two and say you know i
52:48
want to make more money than others those are the something you want to focus on
52:52
Also, you can make money by specializing in a field where there's less number of people
52:58
There's less number of people and there's demand coming up. That's again, you can get a lot of money
53:07
So for example, blockchain is one of the technologies that's going to grow, continue to grow
53:11
But if you're a blockchain architect, you can, and if companies are looking for it, you can
53:16
ask a very good price for your salary for that or a contract for that
53:21
So again, it really depends on what field you are in and if you are willing to become
53:27
that expert in one field. I think if you have this niche market, you have this specialization in one of those
53:34
that's always a plus, you know, always a plus because there's not too many people there
53:40
But if you are one of them where everybody's doing that, everybody's learning that, then
53:44
it's like it's competition. Again, it's supply and demand. So cloud, data, AI, machine learning, these are all in big demand right now
54:01
Okay, let's take another question. We'll take a couple of more questions
54:07
Yeah, sorry, you want to tell something about architecture? Please explain. Yeah, so one of my questions I'll take is how to become an architect
54:15
You want to become an architect really means here I'm talking about a software architect
54:20
Like how do you architect this new software system? That's what architects do
54:26
I think I've written an article on C Sharp Corner as well, detailed article on that
54:32
So to become an architect, first of all, it's funny. Some of the guys who are just starting a job and they are one year experience
54:39
They're like, I want to become a software architect tomorrow. This is not how it works
54:44
One of the things is it takes time and experience is very important
54:48
If you become a software architect, experience is very important. It requires at least some experience
54:54
So the best way you can become an architect is obviously start reading the documentation, articles, books, watch video trainings
55:03
But with that also try to get involved in projects where you are close to the architects who are building existing systems, right
55:11
try to be in the meetings where software architects are doing deciding okay what are the requirements
55:17
how do we architect the system how do we think I'm not sure everybody can just go and jump in
55:23
those meetings but try to find a project or a company where you're more involved in that or
55:28
you can even say ask your company hey do you mind if I sit and learn more about architecture
55:34
and I'm just going to be, you know, you got to be proactive about it
55:39
And then that's probably the way to do it. If you don't get a chance in your own company or in the team
55:47
maybe you want to start your own system. You want to start building your own, let's say, website
55:51
and see how you're going to architect, where you're going to store the data, what database you're going to choose, what APIs you're going to build
55:59
what kind of local cache you're going to use, how the UI look like
56:03
are there different components so you can also do that now you say you i can i don't have time for
56:09
do that i don't have my company not going to offer me that maybe you want to work with a couple of
56:13
people in a group and then when you work on a group with the with the project yourself then you end up
56:19
doing everything right which includes architecture includes requirements good writing code includes
56:25
testing include deployment and maintenance so that's another way to do that but again try to
56:32
learn first what architects do try to get involved with them try to ask questions and then read
56:40
read books on it you don't even need to buy anything these days you can just go online and
56:44
search as your architectural best practice guidelines and you can start reading so hopefully
56:50
that helps hey good to see you back here uh uh ledger uh yeah i think uh yeah i see good to see
56:59
you back here in the studio, I mean the show, live show. Thanks for joining, coming say
57:04
hi. Todd, what's this Todd say here? Can you, yep, can you click on this Todd here? Let's
57:14
put on the screen here. Yeah. Doing conversations to the cloud, conversions to the cloud. Come
57:20
in, do the conversion, move it to the next project or company, do this to contract or
57:25
company will pay bucks being here yeah of course i don't listen to my own advice i'm 30 year
57:31
yeah so it it's listen uh goal is really it's not about oh i'm full-time employee or i'm a
57:40
contractor or i'm in on my own company goal is really is that what you really wanted if you
57:46
you're happy with that job and all that and sometimes sometimes in life we make these easier
57:52
options they are you know there's security job security right you know you know it's okay i don't
57:57
need to you know it's flexible job gets your vacation gets your holidays still get paid sick
58:04
leaves and all that uh but if you start your own company there's a lot of challenges as well right
58:09
challenges are unless people don't realize biggest challenge you start your own company is that
58:15
uh nobody's paying you if you don't work you don't get paid you take vacation you don't get paid
58:20
if you're sick you get totally so it's like a lot of challenges until you really go ahead and
58:25
establish your own company and there's no guarantee that every year you're gonna get a growth there's
58:30
no guarantee that you're gonna have a stock options or you know retirement plan so it's a
58:36
it's it's challenging for both sides and you have to find the way what makes you most happy and
58:42
successful what drives you right for me for example i don't seem i i cannot work for a company i
58:48
I cannot work for anybody because I move fast. I like quick decisions and it frustrates me if things are taking time and the guys are not learning
58:58
So you have to find that your own space, what makes you happy
59:04
That's the end goal of life, right? And it's nothing wrong with being an employee or nothing wrong with starting your own company or nothing wrong with doing both
59:12
You have to find that what makes you happy. So with that said, anybody coming in Simon to say hi
59:23
If not, then we can just be done with this show. All right. So nobody else joining us behind the scene today
59:30
No worries. What we can do is now time is running out one last minute
59:38
So I want to kind of remind everybody that this is summertime here in the US and I'm sure some bunch of other places as well
59:45
this month and some next month it's going to be slow because of travel, vacations, holidays
59:52
and so on and so forth so stay tuned for next week
59:56
I will not have this show but week after hopefully we will continue this show
