Welcome to Season 2, Episode 5, Commentary for the Residuals
0:04
I'm Michael Paul Smith. I play Pete. Hi, I'm Julian Pentevale. I play Valerie. Hey, what's up? I'm James Tabique. I play Devin
0:10
Hi, I'm Patrick Jones, and I play Lance. Here we have Kathy Searle, Rocco Ciricella, and J. Julian Christopher playing our execs
0:19
They're sort of a nebulous job position team that works with Mark on certain auditions
0:25
And they are hysterical. Yes. And in this scene, they're secretly making a Facebook page for Mark because some client that is unnamed requires it because it must be social media or technology related
0:40
And in order to qualify, they have to have Facebook profiles. And Mark hates that. So they have to do it on the on the DL
0:46
I love how Devin and Valerie sort of just with eye contact said, like, let's not get involved
0:52
Let's just say we don't know anything. Like we don't want to wake the dragon. So we did that in like an instant
0:58
Exactly. I love Devin and Valerie. Let's be friends with Devin and Valerie. Devin and Valerie, I mean, we have a thing
1:04
We have a thing. It was important that we established that because in the very next episode, they try to educate Emmett about things to avoid
1:12
That's right. So their knowledge of Mark is pretty extensive. They just don't want to share it with these execs
1:18
No. Why would we give away the keys to the kingdom? If they didn't know what he likes and hate it, they would not be working there. Yeah
1:25
That's just the thing. The Lylephile. I wanted to explore the Mark Lyle character as the enigma that he is
1:31
He's sort of unknowable. Or certainly unpredictable. What is that shirt? Is that a kitten
1:37
That's like a kitten at a pine. I love how he owns these shirts I know He came out of Mark Esner actual wardrobe And he like went out of his way to find like just the worst shirts possible he really did james what does your shirt say that shirt
1:50
actually depending on which way you read it funny story um says i just want to
1:56
you or i just want to love you depending on which way you read the and the you know that
2:04
that little the blue and red word and i wore that on stage i remember um on broadway uh
2:10
you know, before the curtain had gone up, I was a swing in Mary Poppins on Broadway
2:14
And I remember one of the little children that played Michael or Banks
2:19
actually was reading my T-shirt. And, you know, there's the blue light backstage
2:24
before the curtain goes up. And so it filtered out all of the blue of the shirt
2:28
And all that was left was, I just want to... Was his mother around
2:33
No, no, no, no one was. You know, stage management was around. But they, but you know, these kids
2:38
they're just, you know, they're working in an adult environment. They've seen it all
2:43
He was completely unfazed. But it didn't even occur to me that I was wearing that shirt
2:48
My shirt is all the direwolves from Game of Thrones. Can you name them without looking right now
2:52
Of course. Go for it. Grey Wind. Lady. Nymeria. Shaggy Dog. Ghost
2:59
And Summer. And Summer. Summertime, summertime, summertime, summertime. Kelly Warren, everybody. Kelly Warren
3:06
And this is an outtake that we wound up using. Yes. Oh, that's great. I had to..
3:10
Wait for it. See, that god was actually Kelly Warren saying, God, I can't believe I dropped this
3:19
But we just used it because it worked. And you could hear everyone laughing that I had to edit out
3:24
But it was easy to do that. Ed was also amazing in this getting in Kelly tub to get the shot Yeah he navigated that tiny space
3:36
Look at that, he's in her tub. I mean, there's nowhere else to go. That's great
3:40
And that's Alicia B. Woods, our new friend. Oh my God, Alicia B. Woods. Reprising her angry, evil roommate character from season four
3:45
She's just not going to help her. Everyone in New York City has an angry, evil roommate. She has her own cell phone right there
3:50
I can't tell you when I, so clearly I was not on this set because I'm not in this scene
3:55
but I can't tell you when this finally came out, this episode, how wildly entertained I was by her left breast resting on the top
4:03
Look, it's just completely displaced and resting. And it's featured, really. I mean, it needs a writer
4:10
This is why Kelly Warren is fearless. It should get its own credit. Its own special thanks. It's really, yeah
4:14
Special thanks to Kelly's left breast for resting on top. I do want to say one more thing about Alicia B. Woods
4:20
She is one of the best people I know who can do a lot with a little
4:24
Yes. Oh, yeah. So, just... We can talk more about Kelly's boobs if that's where we're going
4:29
Just the left one. Just the left one, really, in this episode. Aw
4:34
Look at her knights in shining armor. It's one of many pieces of Islanders swag that Nick and I..
4:39
Oh, there's another one that I try to feature as we are beleaguered Islanders fans
4:43
I have to commend you guys because this is a small New York bathroom for getting all of those shots inside that bathroom
4:49
It's not like we're not at Silver Cup. This is Kelly's apartment. Exactly
4:53
I mean, this is legit. and this is Brooklyn. Which is kind of like awesome in general about the essence of the
4:59
residuals is that it's all legit. All of it. All of these people work in this industry
5:04
Yeah. Yeah. No one's pretending anything really. Yeah. We're just kind of showing up and doing
5:09
our lives Yeah Sure When we had our first meeting about the concept of the show I mean our very first meeting it was Jillian myself Nick and Kelly And we walked Kelly back to her apartment because her closet was falling apart
5:23
And Nick actually, like we helped her fix things all around her apartment. So that sort of inspired this scene in itself
5:28
She lived nearby us at the time on the Upper East Side. And I remember she posted a picture on Facebook
5:32
She's like, when your closet breaks and your three friends stop everything and walk you home to fix it
5:37
like that's a New York moment. And so Mike just put it in the show. that ripped apart
5:42
couch is as of yesterday I think it's still on the curb it's probably still
5:46
on our curb outside that's the Game of Thrones theme song is Valerie's ringtone
5:51
I love the idea that Valerie's fighting the dark side by just squeezing a stress ball
5:55
and staring at an open flame she's kind of out of her
5:59
is she praying to the word of light like what exactly is happening
6:03
do we count that as a Game of Thrones reference here do we I like to think that
6:07
Valerie's house dark because I am and when you have your own show
6:11
you can do whatever you want the Starks don't pray to the Lord of Lights you'd have to be Stannis
6:16
you'd have to be a Stannis person you guys had so much fun
6:22
filming that scene and Kelly was very generous to let us spray all over her apartment
6:28
and it really was a Five Guys burger I feel like Five Guys is more special to bring someone
6:33
in like McDonald's didn't you bring us Five Guys on set? yes one day we just bought a bunch of burgers
6:39
Yeah, yeah. We wanted to shout them out more, but they just gave you a thank you
6:45
They don't have a bag that says Five Guys. They just have brown paper bags and a receipt, so that's all we had to show
6:50
Most people aren't stopping. Most people are just like, . Shovel it in
6:54
Five Guys, here's your shout out. Thank you. Thanks. Thanks, Five Guys. And thank you for watching
6:58
Stay tuned for episode six commentary. Bye
