Hello, I'm Richard Ridge for Broadway World
0:08
David Blaine presents Ossie Wynn's Inner Circle, an intimate magic experience. Ossie is one of the world's most celebrated magicians and he begins performances here
0:16
tonight at the Gym at Judson where I caught up with him and he gave me a sneak peek
0:26
So Ossie, here we are at your brand new theater here at the Gym at Judson
0:30
This is the outer lobby, right? So what are some of these incredible paintings
0:34
Are these yours? Yes, they're mine and these are my mentors. The show is called Inner Circle
0:40
This is a hallway. That's how people enter the show. So throughout the hallway, there's about 11 or 12 paintings starting with David Blaine
0:49
who is producing the show and we have the professor, Dave Vernon
0:54
And each and every one of them is a story for me. It's part of my journey
0:58
Okay, so these will be lining the hallway. So who are some of the people we have here? So we have Juan Tamarith who is my maestro
1:04
This is my biggest mentor, a big influence on me. Every one of them is
1:09
But him specifically, we have Cardini who is the greatest solo silent act ever created
1:16
We have Houdini. Maybe you've heard of him. Oh yeah, loved by Houdini. Exactly
1:21
Even though Houdini died almost a hundred years ago, he left lots of blueprints out
1:26
there for me to understand that it's important to create drama in magic
1:31
So I do talk about some of my mentors in the show and how they shaped me as a magician
1:37
and it's because of these people that I can do what I can do
1:41
So here we are sitting in your brand new theater. Now tell me, this is stunning because this is so intimate
1:47
Tell me why you wanted to build a theater for your new show
1:51
We did it because close-up magic requires intimacy. Every seat here has to be great
1:59
They need to be close to the action. They need to be able to see it
2:04
And it's a lot of... We fought on every inch. Like literally, we went to the workshop, you know, at Arcana and we had to play with..
2:14
And we fought one more inch, higher, taller, raked. And it's really important for magic because I want people to not just see magic
2:23
I want them to feel the magic. And distance and intimacy is very important
2:28
The perception is that most magic has bad angles, right? If I only could see over his shoulder, I'll see things I'm not supposed to see
2:35
But look at that. This person right here and you, that's as close as people are going to sit to me
2:42
Magic is being viewed almost 360, which means you can scrutinize it and it's hopefully still
2:49
going to fool you badly. There's a lot of surprises that I am not telling you about because I want people to come and
2:55
discover it for themselves. But from the moment you walk into this theater, you become a part of this show
3:03
The moment you set foot in the theater. So without spoiling too much, if people decide to come and see this show, just know it's
3:11
very interactive, it's personal, and it's a lot of fun. So here we are outside the gym at Judson
3:18
You are one of the producers of this incredible show. Arnie, tell me why you wanted to bring Ossie here
3:24
Well, first of all, my love for magic. And second, I've seen a lot of magicians, produced a lot of magicians over the years
3:32
And he's the next coming to me of magic. And people have to see him
3:38
You have to see it to believe it. So what will you show me today
3:42
Well, I will not show you anything from the show. Because as I said, it's all surprises and stuff
3:49
But let's see what we got. I have a little shelf here. Let's see. Let's see what's under the table here
3:53
No, nothing. Just cards. And I, we've literally borrowed these cards from somebody
3:59
So let's make sure it's a full deck. Would you give them a shuffle? Sure
4:05
Let's see. I'm going to give this to you for a second. Sure. Give them a shuffle
4:09
Let's see if I can do that shuffle here. And I'll give you some pens so you can maybe sign it. Wow
4:15
Look at that. Oh, please. That's it. You have to come to the show
4:19
This is a layman's show. Seriously. I used to do this really, really well. I'm like here
4:23
It's all an illusion. Look at this. Get in there. That's great
4:27
All right. All right. I'll pass you the torch. Perfect. All right
4:32
So here's the deal. I do need you to personalize one of these cards. And it does, you can name it
4:35
I prefer no picture card. Something with like white space or something. So you tell me which card do you want to use
4:40
It doesn't matter. Oh, should I tell you what it is? Sure, sure. We're just going to sign it. Okay
4:45
The five of hearts. And you did see it in here? Yes. Somewhere
4:49
You saw it somewhere or no? Yeah. Okay. You know what? Why don't you do this
4:54
With your free hand, maybe switch the mic with this. And with your free hand, just grab any one of these. Take one. Take any one
4:58
Doesn't matter. This one is good? Yep. Okay. And you said five of hearts
5:03
Let's see what you got. This is crazy. I know. It's five of hearts
5:07
It's amazing. Let's make it more personal. Okay. Sign it with either red, black
5:11
It's up to you. Okay. You're going with the black. I'm going with black. Okay
5:16
I'm signing the card here? Yeah. I'll hold it for you. Put my name on there
5:20
Give it a big signature right there. And put maybe today's date underneath
5:24
Today is September. It is September. September. It's 14th. Yeah. You start tomorrow night. Yeah
5:32
I should know the date. You should know the date. 22. Perfect
5:37
So you agree that this is a one of a kind piece of paper
5:42
There's no other card signed exactly this way with your signature and everything, right
5:47
That's it. And let's place it, I don't know. I think, would you agree with me
5:52
Hold on. I want to make sure it's about center. Would you agree that's about middle
5:56
Yes, that is middle. Before we commit to this, you can, if you want, maybe change it
6:01
Maybe change the location. Maybe move it up or down. Doesn't matter to me. If you want to
6:05
Or as is. It's up to you. Put it in here? Yeah
6:09
Just push it. Push it inside yourself. Push it. Alright, so now, yes? Yes
6:14
The card goes right here. And it was five of hearts signed a certain way, right? Yes
6:22
Did you see what happened? Yes. Did you see the card kind of like leap all the way from here and land under the wallet? No
6:32
Lift the wallet slowly. I don't know. Sorry, sorry. Sometimes, okay, my bad
6:37
Sometimes it happens that it goes inside. So if you don't mind, just take a look. Okay
6:43
There's a flap right there. Can you open it? Okay, yes. And then open the other flap
6:47
And there's one card inside. I think that's the one you signed
6:51
Is that true? This is my card. Richie Rich, 9-14-2022. You may keep that
6:59
How did this get in the wallet? That's the card. How did this get in the wallet
7:03
That I don't know. I just know the part of it. This is amazing stuff
7:08
Thank you so much. This is really great. And again, the good stuff we're keeping for the show
7:12
I was going to say, it's even better than this. It's an appetizer. Just an appetizer
