Hi, my name is Ramin Karimloo
0:01
I'm Emilia Mailem. And we're about to do the new production of the Phantom of the Opera
0:05
And we're bringing it to Italy for the first time ever. In Trieste in July and..
0:10
Milan in October. Here we are to give you a sneak peek of what we've been getting up to
0:16
and maybe a little tune or two? Sure, why not? Alright, enjoy
0:22
Turn back Turn your face away From the garish light of day
0:30
Turn your thoughts away From cold, unfeeling light And listen to the music of the night
0:43
Let your mind start a journey Through a strange new world Leave all thoughts of the world you knew before
0:56
And let your soul take you where you long to be
1:10
Only then can you belong to me
1:24
First of all, this was so beautiful. What you two did here today
1:28
What did today mean to both of you? It meant so much to me
1:32
This has been my first time ever doing press or theater. This is my theater debut
1:37
So it's just so exciting. I feel like this is a whole new world for me
1:40
It's been nice to rediscover something I was so passionate about growing up
1:45
to be able to have done at a younger age. So it's exciting to revisit it with a whole new lens on it
1:53
A whole new direction. A whole new concept. But still, what I love about this one
1:58
both me and Fede, the director, and who envisioned all this, we both are such fans of the original
2:05
We both consider it a masterpiece. So knowing that's on his heart as well
2:09
I felt confident and comfortable to kind of like, well, maybe I will revisit this. So I'm excited
2:13
I'm very, very excited. I love you rediscovering this because you played the Phantom numerous times
2:19
And now you're doing your whole new version of the Phantom with her and this production
2:24
Well, it's funny you say numerous times. I only did it once in London and then Love Never Dies
2:28
It's the 25th anniversary performance and production that I was so blessed to be part of that still lives on
2:36
But I think that's given me a longer association with the part than actually having worn the mask on an actual stage
2:43
But I've been a fan since 12 years old. So it's ingrained in my psyche as to what happens
2:51
And because that original is a masterpiece, so it's, like I said, it was a creative detox
2:58
before we started adding layer. But what was great that first week, we didn't even sing a note. We literally were going text, line by line, discussing it
3:06
We'll keep asking every question as to why. And if some of the choices comes back to the original, well then, great
3:13
Then we move on. We continue with it. But then to be brave with, well, actually
3:18
this is what I feel we could say with this on this occasion. But please promise me that sometimes you will think
3:33
of me
3:58
Taking this to Italy for the very first time, to this beautiful theater, what that means to the two of you
4:04
I'm so incredibly excited to be bringing this to Italy. I have Italian roots and family that lives in Italy
4:10
So they get to actually come see me in the show, which is amazing
4:14
I think that Italy is such a beautiful and a romantic country
4:18
So to bring this piece of theater, which is so passionate, so romantic and heartfelt, to this beautiful place
4:25
that's known for its art and its culture, to bring this piece of culture there
4:31
it's truly a beautiful blend of these two worlds. So I'm excited
4:35
Listen, I'm all for travel. I was accustomed to traveling so much
4:39
And over the last 18 months, I've not gone to the places I usually go to
4:44
So to go to Italy, which has always been a place on my heart
4:48
because it's the first place we escaped when we fled Iran, went to Rome, I started Rome in Ostia
4:54
So to go there with this production that I never thought I would want to return to, and I was like, oh, everything's lining up
4:59
And nothing was saying no. My whole life has been based on instinct, and nothing said no
5:03
I was just like, and every conversation led to a, just kept getting further down the line
5:08
It was never a matter of one meeting with Fedi and we're doing it. It was like, we talked, okay, let's talk again
5:14
Something else, and here we are. Yeah. It's just closed on Broadway after 35-and-something years or whatever
5:21
Now it's going to Italy for the very first time. The audiences are buying tickets from all around the world to come to this production
5:28
Just what it means to you to be bringing this show to a European audience, especially Italy
5:33
It means so much to me because I love this show so much with all my heart and soul
5:39
And to continue its legacy in a new way all across the world
5:45
to bring it to people who have never seen it before, it's so meaningful to me, and it means a lot
5:51
Italy's so steeped with culture and their love and passion for the arts
5:56
and I didn't realize how there was still a market to be explored there
6:00
when it comes to music theatre and the way we tell stories and the way Broadway, West End, Japan, have established markets for that
6:08
how they tell stories. So I'm excited to this be the first of many in a beautiful country
6:14
that's got the facilities and beautiful theatres and a passionate audience. So it's nice to kind of introduce them to probably one of the greatest pieces
6:24
of modern musical theatre
