Hello, I'm Richard Ridge for Broadway World
0:02
Angel Lloyd Weber's Bad Cinderella has come to Broadway, and we're here on opening night to celebrate with the company
0:25
Welcome home to Broadway. How does it be on? It feels amazing
0:29
It's been a like, you know, it's like for everyone. We've had a sort of period of nothing happening
0:34
and then suddenly we're back and it's so good to be back doing something so joyous and fun
0:38
and with such an incredible cast. I feel crazy, emotional, overwhelmed, grateful
0:45
It's just, I can't believe this night is finally here. To be playing Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cinderella
0:51
like when you first found out, like, was it a big pinch me moment? Could you tell everybody
0:56
I mean, he asked me in the room and I said yes, I was hysterical and I was told I couldn't tell anyone
1:01
So that was really hard, just my immediate family. I was just overwhelmed
1:05
I couldn't believe it. I couldn't believe what was happening. And sometimes I still can't even
1:10
You're also an inspiration to so many little girls who are in that audience like, oh my God, I look just like her
1:16
It's a huge responsibility in the honor of my life because I didn't have that growing up
1:20
And so to be that, hopefully for even one person means everything to be
1:24
It is opening night. First of all, welcome home to Broadway. How does it feel
1:28
I mean, it's the honor of a lifetime to be able to, first of all, do this for a living
1:34
and to do 16 Broadway shows and to have this one be an original Andrew Lloyd-Weber musical
1:42
I mean, you know, a girl can't ask for more than that
1:46
I feel amazing It so cool to be back at the Imperial a place that I already know and love and I feel so comfortable in It amazing to be back here and celebrating another beautiful piece
1:58
You just crossed Schubert Alley to be here, right? Yes, just one block away to be here, so it's so exciting
2:04
It is opening night. How do you feel tonight? I just feel like full of love. I feel like everyone is just excited to be here
2:10
and it's just like coming off of everyone, so I'm pumped. I'm so excited. I'm excited to be back
2:16
at the Imperial and I made my debut here 26 years ago with Le Miz so I'm back
2:23
here making my OBC debut so it's really exciting I think the energy of the cast
2:28
and the crew truly everyone is such a positive energy every day and it makes
2:33
coming into work this is my Broadway debut so as nerve-wracking our Broadway
2:37
debut we got 15 of them yeah we're two of them so that is really really special
2:42
and to do it with this group with this show I'm so grateful I'm
2:46
The thing that's really special for me is I was at Andrew's house and they called
2:52
lockdown and I locked down with him for three months and we created what became the
2:59
original album and you know with you know with him and then Andrew's son Nick produced
3:07
that album with Andrew and the three of us were locked down at his house together and
3:14
We did it in a very, very unusual way because of very extraordinary circumstances
3:21
And, you know, it's going to be with me forever. And tonight, you know, I feel this is for Nick and Andrew
3:30
because you know we put our hearts and soul into making the start of what has become this massive Broadway production Do you remember when you first fell in love with the Angeloid River World like the first musical of his you saw I saw Evita when I was still in college and it blew me away
3:52
I mean, it's still one of my favorite shows of all time
3:56
And to watch a woman on stage with that kind of power and that kind of, you know
4:02
those songs, it just, it made me think, like, what if I could
4:07
could do that. I mean, at that point I had no dreams of being on Broadway at all. But that sort of
4:13
stirred something in me that blossomed a couple of years later. I saw Phantom of the Opera when I was
4:19
14, the touring production in Orange County, and it blew my mind. I went in not knowing anything
4:26
and I'd never seen a musical like that before. That's chandelier. What are you going to do? It's
4:31
outrageous. My parents actually met on an Angeloid Weber musical on Starlight Express. Neither of them. My mom was
4:37
a paralegal, my dad's an attorney. They have nothing to do with the business. So I like to say I'm literally the product of Angela Weber
4:43
musical, and so that was my first exposure. Everything about Phantom. I watched the 25th anniversary version of Phantom every day in 10th grade
4:52
That was my introduction to Angela Weber. And I think it's a beautiful show
4:58
The music is sweeping. It's gorgeous. Rameen and Sierra, greatest cast of all time
5:04
Katz, was the reason I'm here today, truly. My mom took me to see cats when I was a small boy
5:09
I saw it 11 times before I was 12 years old, ran the VHS into the ground
5:15
It is truly why I started dancing and why I'm here today. Patty Lepone singing a New Argentina, the Tony Awards thing
5:24
when she was like, well, you'll do, nah, da, da. I lived for that
5:28
When I was in middle school I was like this is what I want to do for the rest of my life And it actually wild that I now in an angelo river show yes it was cats I was seven years old I saw it in London and I remember one of the
5:39
cats came up the aisle as they do and like nudged my arm a little bit and left a little bit of makeup
5:44
on my shirt and I wouldn't let my mom wash it and I loved it and it happened to be my Broadway
5:49
debut a bunch of years ago and so now I'm come full circle Broadway debut OBC of a new
5:56
Andrew Lloyd Weber musical and I'm just ecstatic audiences are falling in love with this, especially young kids, what that means to you
6:03
Yes, it's so exciting because they're the next generation of theater makers. So to perform for so many kids who are excited and you can see it in their eyes because that was us
6:11
Like my first Broadway show, my eyes lit up and I was like, I think I got to do this
6:16
And it's happening every day here at Bat Cinderella, so it's fun
6:20
Sometimes it's like a party in there. I mean, people are going nuts
6:24
Listen, I think that's what makes me so happy about that is that, you know, it's just
6:28
It's just good to go and go back to theatre for what we actually want. We want to be entertained and we want to feel joy and we want to feel moved and we want to cry
6:36
And the show provides all of that. So I think it's a joyous piece to be part of and it's so colourful
6:43
It's a joy. Well, mostly we just want people to have a really good time
6:48
And I think there's certainly a time for a campy, fun, laugh out loud, romantic show
6:54
This is the time. So I hope people feel that way
