Hello, I'm Richard Ridge for Broadway World
0:02
The hit musical Back to the Future continues to play to packed houses here on Broadway at the Winter Garden Theater
0:08
and now they're getting ready to kick off a brand new production that will hit the road
0:12
and we drop by the rehearsal room to meet the company. You two are about to hit the road with Back to the Future
0:20
You've been on the road before, Mike Friday. How excited are you... I got lost. I just found my way back
0:25
I just got back. It's been years. I was on the road. I took the wrong turn. Don't go left at Albuquerque because you know where you end up
0:33
Well, you may be playing there again. I know, I can't wait. I love Albuquerque. Albuquerque, here we go
0:38
So for you, first time touring? Yes. First time, I'm so excited to hit the road to see the whole country
0:45
and to be able to do like this beloved show for everyone
0:51
Okay, you guys are playing these iconic characters. Talk about who you play and what you love about them already
0:55
Yeah, I'm playing Marty McFly, which is the good. coolest sentence I've ever said
1:00
Like, he's just, he's like the coolest person you can be without being a
1:04
superhero, and it's the best. I'd love it. You're a superhero. I've seen it. It's superhero
1:10
like. You can't believe it. He has gamma. He has superhuman strength
1:16
He's amazing. I've never seen anything like it I play Doc Brown and the iconic Doc Brown I love Doc because Doc is innocent and has childlike wonder about everything which is why I perfect for the part because I still have that
1:32
See? You too. I am so thrilled to be part of such an iconic story, an iconic original movie
1:39
and now to get to bring that stage adaptation to life, I can't wait to share it with audiences across America
1:46
I play Lorraine Baines. I absolutely love her. She has a part of my heart
1:50
She is so sweet. She is so innocent, but she is ready to know what she doesn't know
1:55
And I love that about her. She wants to learn. She wants to discover. And I think you guys will be really excited for this state adaptation
2:01
The DeLorean car is on stage in the show. The first time you saw it, what went through your mind
2:06
Theater magic to the extreme. When I saw the Broadway show, I left in awe
2:11
I was fully enveloped in the world of Back to the Future. And when I saw that DeLorean come on stage, I was like, I want to see it 20 more times
2:17
Let's go. Incredible. George McFly is George is he's just trying so hard
2:23
he's trying so hard I mean there's so much anxiety but his imagination
2:28
is so fruitful and it is just budding and the relationship with Marty
2:32
is just one of my personal favorite in the show it's a real father-son
2:36
moment of growing together and to get to tell a story with Caden Brouch is awesome awesome what are you looking forward to the most
2:42
about bringing this musical across the country it a true love letter to the fans of yesterday and today and Today truly I mean Bob Gale has been in the room the entire time and reminding us time and time again of who this is for
2:55
It is for the people of this great country. And to be able to bring that to them and really have a true dialogue is how it's meant to be
3:03
Yeah, I play Biff Tannen, so I'm the bully and the villain of the show
3:07
But, you know, it's a lot of fun, lots of laughs. People like to laugh at Biff
3:11
And so, and I like to clown around. So it's perfect. Gosh, you know, it means so much
3:15
is it means so much to so many people. It has such a special place in so many people's hearts
3:20
So excited to bring the nostalgia of the film to people that already know and love it
3:26
and then bring this show to new audiences. And, you know, we're going to take them for a ride
3:30
It's full-blown theater magic. It's a lot of fun. I can't even like put into words how excited I am. It's like Christmas and Thanksgiving
3:39
and the Easter Bunny like all rolled in one. I play Marvin Berry and Goldie Wilson the mayor
3:45
What I love about him already is his resilience. Because in the beginning of the show, he starts off as like a worker in a diner
3:52
and the evolution of him where he becomes the mayor in the future. And his whole song got to start somewhere
3:58
It's like, yes, I might be at the bottom now, but I can become this thing that I've always dreamed I could be
4:04
How excited are you to be bringing this incredible musical to a whole new audience
4:08
Well you could argue this is the greatest time travel story ever written This is Academy Award dominated screenplay that Bob Gail wrote with Robert Zemeckis And I think that people
4:21
are going to love it. You're going to love it. You have to come outside of your
4:25
house and turn off your television, turn off the Netflix, and come see
4:28
back to the future. Come out. Because there's lots of troubles in the world
4:32
and you will come and enjoy yourself and forget about it all for two and a half hours
4:37
Yeah. Yeah. It's has everything that the movie had Plus, we sing and dance, and, like, there's heart, there's fun, there's excitement
4:47
It's, like, the best time. It has all of the things that the movie has, and Bob says that he wants people to feel the same way they felt when they saw the movie
4:58
But when you see it on stage, if it's happening in front of you, you're looking at it differently
5:02
You're going to experience it differently because you're looking at it from a different angle, and it has all of the sci-fi wonder that the movie has
5:11
but also, as Caden says, the heart and the relationship. Getting to know your parents in a different way is something that is amazing
5:20
and something that you can't really ever do because you weren't there. Well, Marty gets to be there and see that
5:26
and I think that's what makes it always universal, is the heart that it has
5:32
And there's a DeLorean. Oh, and there's the DeLorean. Yeah, get excited for that. I'm excited to see how it works
