What's made this so special for you with working on this show? Oh, well, you know
0:14
working with all these wonderful actors and seeing it come. We started in 2014 in one iteration of the play
0:22
And I'm just so happy for Steven, too. And this Broadway community
0:29
That's the thing. You know when you get that nomination that you're going to be able to be in the midst
0:34
of the community. Because nobody gets to see everything, but to get to see everyone
0:40
when you come to the Tony Affairs. You have brought so much joy with this show
0:46
Old audiences, new young audiences coming to the theater for the very first time
0:50
What that's meant to you? Oh, that's the whole thing. I mean, the young people and the audiences
0:57
that come back again. Because we got audiences that saw it once
1:02
and come back again. And that's the kick. That's the kick. And you know the conversations
1:09
that when you leave and you go to the restaurant and they're like
1:12
can you sell this for me? Well, why did you do this? Why did you do that? You know, it's a joy to be a part of that
1:19
Take me back to young, young Steven. Like the youngest, that first play you did
1:23
in kindergarten or whatever. What was one of the first things you did and what would older Steven tell younger Steven now
1:29
Oh, wow, that you're doing the right thing, kid. You're doing the right thing
1:32
I, in high school, first year high school, I was asked to play Linder in A Raisin in the Sun
1:42
And I said, what? I was going to all black high school, you know
1:46
And I said, okay. And I did it. And because all the people who were in the play
1:52
were upper class people that I wanted to know and that I did know from the community
1:57
So I did. And then the next time that director was doing a play in college, she cast me as Walter Lee
2:05
So I got to go from Linder to Walter Lee. And now I've played Bobo with Denzel Washington
2:11
and Jim Pickens, Roger Robinson through the years. So Raisin in the Sun is one of my favorite plays
2:18
And so that was my first one. I love it. I love it
