Girl, I love a little opening night party, honey
0:02
And it's like immersive, so we must be dancing for 90 minutes. No intermission
0:06
Sign me up, honey. We outside. Hello, I'm Richard Ridge for Broadway World
0:14
Welcome to the disco. We're on the opening night red carpet for David Byrne and Fat Boy Slim's musical
0:20
Here Lies Love. No, I've a previous thing, American Utopia with David Burns
0:33
So me and David, we go way, way, way back. So I'm a big supporter
0:38
He's one of the great American artists. Multidimensional. That's my brother, David Byrne
0:44
And how important it is to the three of you to have a story like this told on Broadway
0:50
I think the more diverse we get, films, Broadway. We got to open stuff
0:58
We got to be open. Let's open it up. Let's let everybody have a chance to tell their story
1:04
You know, the other great thing is you're also entertained by this and you also have a history lesson
1:11
which I think is amazing what theater and creative people do. Well, if you had told somebody, I'm gonna make a musical about... Yeah
1:19
But then they... That's David. That's David. What about getting you on Broadway, sir
1:27
Gotta dance. Welcome to Broadway. How does it feel? This is a dream come true And I not even trying to like I don even know what I trying to say right now This is literally something I wrote down a long time ago that I wanted to be involved with some type of musical or something to do with Broadway
1:45
And this just fell on my lap beautifully. Like the timing was right, the universe was right, and the people were right
1:52
And this is a great time for this story to be told. Talk about what this show means to you personally and why you said, yes, I have to be a part of this
2:00
Well, one, I'm half Filipino. It's my mom's story. and I also lived in the Philippines during the Marcos regime
2:06
You know, I was there. I was there for five years from five to 11, so five to ten
2:12
But I was 11 when I moved back to the States. And yeah, so this is that story
2:17
You know, a lot of people don't know about this, you know. And what a wonderful way for us to tell our story through music and dance
2:23
You know what I mean? That's something that's beautiful about Filipinos. We love to entertain
2:27
And this is a great way to tell, you know, a very horrific story
2:32
in a beautiful way. Tell me why you wanted to produce Hearly's Love
2:36
Because Hearly's Love is a completely revolutionary musical, that type of musical that's coming to Broadway
2:43
And I believe that this is the future of audiences, particularly post-COVID
2:48
People want to get involved. They want to experience something. And what a better way to see a Broadway musical
2:54
and to also have an opportunity to participate in it? So that's why
2:59
It's very exciting. You know, it's an all-Filippino cast, and all Philippine, you know, producing team, it's really worthwhile
3:06
It's a testament to how far our community has come with the allyship of everyone in the Broadway community
3:12
The importance of having this story told on Broadway what it means to you It a sign of how far we come and how inclusive Broadway continues to become
3:22
And I'm really happy that above all, it's an amazing story. It's a really entertaining play
3:28
So I'm looking forward to all of it. What about getting you back here on Broadway again
3:32
You've been here before. You've worked in the theater. Would you like to come home again to Broadway? I would love to. And in fact, with any luck I'll be here soon
3:38
The importance of having this on Broadway telling the story now, telling this story now means what to you
3:43
Oh my gosh. As a Filipino American, it means everything to have this amazing all-Philippino cast
3:48
telling a really important story that's incredibly relevant to what's happening in politics
3:52
in the Philippines right now and really speaks to representation on Broadway. I am so excited. When this was at the public, I was dying to see it, and I never got around to it
4:01
And now I get to see it, I'm going to be, and you know I'm a huge Alex Timbers fan
4:06
Love me some Alex Timbers, so I'm really, really excited to see it. Now, were you sitting or standing tonight
4:12
I am standing. So when I did my European tour, my pickup line was
4:17
I want to shake my dance and legs. And so I am like not wearing my flats
4:23
I am ready to dance. We saw this at the public. And when I renegotiated my contract in Milan Rouge
4:31
I said, I need this one night off. Because I know that it's going to be the night of the year here on Broadway
4:37
So we're delighted. We're so excited for us. I mean, that's really, for Alex and the entire company and Leah
4:44
it's fantastic, we can't wait. So we first fell in love with this is the public theater
4:49
Did you at the same time? Yeah, exactly. I was trying to remember what theater was in Was it the Lewester Yeah it was amazing back then with the amazing Ruthian Miles and now we here with a whole new cast I can wait How excited to you too I thrilled
5:02
To be, yeah, to be able to support Conrad, who's a dear friend
5:06
just amazing, and I think just to have a show that's cast entirely by Filipino
5:10
Filipino performers is just like way overdue. I am so excited. Theater is still here
5:16
We are still good and it's strong, and I'm happy to be supporting a new company and a new show
5:20
company and a new show. Now, you didn't see this at the public because you're probably working, right
5:24
I actually did see it in the public, so I'm so excited to see the changes
5:28
I cannot wait. I had so much fun at the public, and I know my mind is about to be blown
5:33
I'm really thrilled and excited to see Broadway shows that are sort of breaking the idea of how we do things
5:38
Absolutely. And how we do things in these houses and what these houses can be shaped like. I think it's tremendous
5:42
And invitation to the audience. You know, inviting the audience in a totally new way
5:46
I'm so, so excited to be here for the opening of Here Lies Love. of Julia Buevas in the cast
5:51
and I'm so excited to see her. Clint Ramos is one of the producers, Leia Salonga, the legend, the icon
5:57
so I'm super excited to be here today. Oh my God, I am ecstatic
6:00
You know, this is the first time that I see, like, my other side on stage, which is so important
6:05
representation is so important. So to be here is such an honor. Is it your first time seeing it
6:09
No, I've seen it. I saw it at the public, we saw a rehearsal
6:15
we saw a preview. I'm not even counting the public, five times. Five times if you get it
6:19
I saw it twice at the public, So it's six times. So you can start the fan club
6:22
Seriously, the here lies up. You have to name it. Yes, absolutely. And if you can't get tickets, I would say you just call us up
6:28
but we can do the whole show for you. Literally no problem. We're ready. We're ready. We do it worse, but we do it
