Well, congratulations. So well-deserved
0:02
What does this Tony mean to you? Well, this is my second Tony
0:08
You know, throughout the years, and I'm just trying to think how many Tonys that I've been nominated for
0:13
and I think this might be my seventh Tony nomination. I've won it twice, the first for Hamilton, which was The World
0:25
And this is so meaningful. Winning for Death becomes so meaningful because it rounds out this amazing year that I've had that, again, is hugely meaningful
0:40
To win the Oscar for Wicked was unbelievable. I mean, and, you know, I was deep in the midst of creating a story
0:53
And, you know, it was because of my love for what I do that, you know, the design, I think, worked
1:02
The design was really intense. I was always engaged with it And you know to be acknowledged for then you know because when I came back home from filming in London you know I was right on to Suf and then on to Death Becomes Her
1:18
and it just you know it it it's so meaningful to bridge you know and have collaborators
1:28
There's work with me in bridging from film work to theater work back to film work
1:35
which just speaks to my love of designing costumes, telling stories through costume, and doing really great work
1:46
You design big projects. I mean, Wicked, there was hundreds of costumes
1:51
Death Becomes Her, there are hundreds of costumes. Designing Wicked, did it make it a little easier to create Death Becomes Her
1:58
I know nothing's easy. Nothing is easy. I mean, there are challenges
2:02
And I approach each challenge, each production, new. I mean what I carry into the production is the experience of problem solving But what different is the the collaborative you know the the director is always different john m true what his ask is you know telling the story of wicked
2:27
is different from what chris catelli needs and also the venue is different you know what i can
2:32
do for film is different than what i can do for theater and vice versa really um and so i always
2:39
enter into that process, hopefully with fresh eyes and with fresh ideas
2:48
And, you know, as well, a different cast of actors. And, you know, with that
2:56
the storytelling changes, you know, qualities change, you know, and with Death Becomes Her
3:01
it's hugely over the top. And that's the fun of it, you know
3:05
and that's what's so exciting, you know, designing in that realm. With Wicked, everything is down to the last detail, very specific, but also magical
3:16
So with both, I'm in heaven designing both. You designed one of Cynthia outfits tonight right Which one did you design for her and how special was that Oh my gosh Well you could say that there a theme that carries from Death Becomes Her in its coloring in its color palette
3:38
But also it speaks of, you know, when she won the Tony in the Color Purple
3:47
as I said it. And then, you know, I just think, you know, to come together with Cynthia as well
3:54
You know, she will always have a very big place in my heart
4:01
And, you know, the time we spent when I was designing Harriet and she was playing Harriet Tubman
4:08
And then on to Wicked and both films of Wicked. And, you know, I love Cynthia
4:14
I would do anything for her. It's a full circle moment. And from one fashion icon to another fashion icon, what you designed for her tonight is gorgeous
4:23
and congratulations on this. Thank you very much. Yeah, it's so exciting
4:27
I can't wait to see it on stage
