Hello, I'm Richard Ridge for Broadway World
0:02
The latest from Second Stage Theater is Larissa Fasthorse's hilarious new comedy
0:06
The Thanksgiving Play. And we're here on opening night to celebrate with our first nighters
0:12
It's opening night, how do you feel tonight? I'm just like, this has been truly one of the most like
0:18
for a heavy and silly and beautifully like exuberant play, this has truly been one of the most joyful
0:26
and weightless processes I've ever been a part of. And it feels like we're caring a lot
0:30
and also giving a lot of it away. And I just am so excited for opening
0:35
Now I can officially say it, welcome to Broadway. How does it feel
0:38
Oh my gosh, it's overwhelming honestly. And it's just so moving. I mean, right behind you are some of our super fans
0:44
who've been to this show dozens of times and we haven't even opened yet. This community is like no other, it really is
0:50
I've gotten to know people here. I feel like I'm leaving a family when I leave tomorrow
0:54
to get to my next show, it's beautiful. You're making your Broadway debut
0:58
a native writer introducing your work, what that means to you? It means so much
1:03
I mean, I'm so honored to follow in the footsteps of the great Lynn Riggs. Someone sent me a beautiful article about him today
1:08
just to reflect on the legacy that he left. And then I'll admit it, it's a little bit of pressure
1:15
I'm a little nervous, I wanna make sure it goes well and I wanna make sure there's so many more native artists
1:20
who deserve to be here walking in the same carpet and having this experience that I'm having right now
1:27
How excited are the two of you to be here for another second stage opening? Well, you know, he's all proud of this
1:33
because he is part of the second stage family but now we get to celebrate our Scandal family too
1:37
Yeah, Scott Foley who's in the show. Yeah, who's our old pal
1:41
And Katie Finneran. And Katie Finneran. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So lots of reasons to celebrate and this amazing play
1:47
Thanksgiving play, which we're super excited to see. Wait till you see this, this is super, oh, okay. Me
1:54
Well that's right, you already came. Yes, yes, yes. Isn't it amazing? It's hilarious
1:58
And you know, we should all listen, it's cautionary. How excited are you to be here tonight
2:04
I can barely contain myself. I think the last time I was at this theater was for Between Riverside and Crazy
2:10
I had my mind blown, I saw some of the greatest acting I've ever seen and I expect a robust followup to that, yeah
2:16
But see, this is what second stage does. Oh, second stage, they do it like nobody's business
2:21
I mean, to have these living playwrights actually get another chance at sharing their great plays
2:28
it's just something that doesn't happen enough and I just love the mission of second stage
2:31
I'm stoked, to put it simply. I just, I love the haze
2:37
This is my second time back since Take Me Out. I saw Riverside here and yeah, just another, you know
2:45
wonderful reason to celebrate and, you know, honor American writers, real American writers, you know
2:51
the most American it gets. How excited are you to be here tonight? So, so, so excited
2:57
This is bringing so much back for us because I met Scott
3:01
We actually met when he was on Broadway 20 years ago doing The Violet Hour. So it's 20 years later, we moved back to the East Coast
3:07
and he's on Broadway again and it is like kismet. I'm so, so happy, yeah
3:12
I'm ready for some laughter. Yeah, we deserve a moment of laughter. A moment of levity
3:17
Also, can you imagine, not just on stage, their backstage life? How hilarious, like literally, I just
3:24
I don't even want to be in the play with them, I just want to be in the dressing room with them
3:27
Like that would be the best. I'm so excited. I'm so excited to see Darcy and her Broadway debut
3:34
I'm excited to see Katie Finneran. Everybody's Scott Foley is like someone who I've loved
3:40
my whole life. Would you like to do Broadway? I don't think I have the stamina for it
3:46
I don't. I think I've like aged 40 years working at SNL
3:51
I don't think my body can handle it. Eight shows a week is like, I do two a week
3:57
and it ruins me, so I don't know. If you do SNL, trust me, you could do eight shows a week
4:02
on Broadway. We'll see, I mean, I don't know. I hope to find out if that's, I don't think
4:07
I think I will perish if I ever try. I love Katie Finneran, we've been friends
4:12
for a long, long time. I'm a huge Darcy Carden fan from the Good Place. Yeah
4:16
Oh my gosh, to see Darcy Carden on stage is wonderful, but also Katie Finneran is a favorite
4:20
Oh, you're gonna have the four of them up there. I'm sure the men are fine, I'm sure the men are fine
4:26
The ladies, the ladies, hello. How excited are the two of you to be here tonight
4:31
for this opening? First of all, best date ever. We're having an amazing little friend day tonight
4:36
and also to see my girl Katie Finneran display all of her comic gifts tonight
4:42
It's always a reason to celebrate Katie on Broadway. You two grew up together, right
4:46
Yes, we grew up together in Miami and I've been giving her standing ovations
4:51
from my living room since we were 14 years old. I am so excited. I'm always excited to be invited
4:57
I'm always really excited because opening nights always feel like the most profound vibration of love
5:02
for the actors, the storytelling, all of the elements coming together and just saying tonight is magic for you
5:11
the offering of just being there for you. Everything is sort of like left out of the, at the door
5:19
Ego is left at the door and it's love. Since this is a play that takes place in like a school
5:24
when you were young, like doing a school play, did something crazy go wrong or something
5:28
Would you have a fun school play that you did? We did, oh, we did Star Wars
5:34
I was R2-D2. Yeah, I had to make my own costume and everything
5:40
Did you look like R2-D2? Just like R2-D2. And my girl Tamara was C-3PO
5:49
And you turned it out. We turned it out. I mean, listen, we were the ones
5:52
who were facilitating the whole story. So you were following us. Forget about the rest of them
5:59
Obi-Wan Kenobi or Luke Skywalker. Nope, nope, nope. Just you two. R2-D2, C-3PO
6:12
We're done. We're done. We're done. We're done. We're done. We're done
6:18
We're done. We're done. We're done. We're done. We're done. We're done
