Hello, I'm Richard Ridge for Broadway World
0:02
Start spreading the news. New York, New York, the musical. It's opening tonight, and we're here with the first-nighters
0:09
How excited are you to be here tonight for New York, New York? I can't believe that John's melodies are going to be soaring through this
0:21
It's a very movie. And at his age, You know, still to be out there popping them out, you know
0:37
And New York, New York, I mean, here in New York, you can't beat that
0:42
You can't beat it. And he's the purest form. And then, well, I mean, they're the purest form of Broadway there is
0:54
And why shouldn't they be here? And then there's Fred Ebb. His lyrics are on stage tonight, too
1:03
I can't control myself when I think of Freddie being gone and Freddy being here
1:14
Freddy is here tonight. Isn't it wonderful how they live on someone like Fred
1:19
it's a new Broadway musical for Freddy tonight? That's exactly right. Freddie is starring tonight
1:28
and we'll always be starring as long as New York, New York is running
1:33
What a night, my friend, but you have the longest history, or one of the longest histories with John Cander
1:39
because he's a new stuff for you. Did he play your auditions
1:43
He did, yeah. He played auditions for me I would give him like And he was thrilled He needed it And he would play and I would never get the part ever
2:00
And I kind of like thought, it's not going to happen for me
2:04
And then along came a little show called, Dum, Dum, Dum, Dum
2:13
Cabaret! And I still feel the same way about him. He's like my great, great older brother
2:24
It is opening night, New York, New York. How excited are you to be here tonight? Yeah, really excited
2:29
And excited to see the show and excited to see friends. And it's great
2:34
It's like family. But this is so amazing because Fred Ebb is no longer with us
2:38
but here he has a brand new Broadway opening tonight. That's amazing, right
2:42
When you think about creating? Yeah, because there's just. The shows live forever. Our shows just keep going
2:47
Listen, when we're gone, the shows will still be here. Yeah. Giving life to the theater and to other people
2:53
I am extremely excited. Susan Stroman Show and New York, New York, and Jimmy Borsleman is in it
3:01
Naomi K. Cook. Those are my producers, buddies. And it's such a great idea, and I can't wait to see us
3:08
Your husband, Clyde Alves, is returning to Broadway, stopping the show in New York, New York
3:14
What does tonight need to you, Robin? It means everything. The last time I got to go to one of Clyde Alves openings, it was 2015
3:22
We had a 10-month-old. He is now 9.5. So this is pretty spectacular
3:28
I have never been more. I just said I'm more excited about this opening than my own opening
3:34
I just ready to be his number one cheerleader be New York New York number one cheerleader and just have a great time and celebrate Broadway Because this is Broadway How excited are you to be here tonight for New York New York number one cheerleader and just have a great time and celebrate Broadway Because this is Broadway How excited are you should to be here tonight for New York New York
3:47
Oh, my God. So excited. We're in Fuego. We're really pumped. It's so awesome to be in a New Canter and Ep Show
3:53
Yeah, we're dying. We're dying. Come on. This is all about friends. I'm watching all of you on this huge carpet
3:58
I know. It's crazy. Everyone has worked with these people and just love them. Yeah, I mean, this is sort of what New York, for me
4:07
When I came to New York, I dreamed would never happen, and here I am. It's happening
4:11
It's happened and it continues to happen. That's the surprise. It continues to happen
4:16
I mean, all we're thinking of is Freddy, of course. That's who we're thinking of a John, of course
4:21
And Lynn, our great friend Lynn. It's just so special. I don't know
4:25
Freddy's with us here tonight. I mean, his songs are up there. I mean, that's thrilling
4:29
And we just love him so much and miss him every day. You had the opportunity, of course, working with them on curtains
4:35
I mean, favorite memory of working on. on that show for you, David, as well. I'll tell you this, that we just recently
4:41
had a reunion of curtains, and everyone said it was one of the greatest
4:45
experiences they've had in the theater. The whole process, just working together. It was just
4:49
a charmed project, so, and maybe the best part was the first time
4:53
Kander played through Coffee Chop Nights, which was a song for my character
4:57
just played through and sang, and it was like, I can't believe I'm here, and I can't believe I'm here
5:01
Do you favor Kander Nev's song or something that plays in your mind? Because they play in my mind
5:05
all the time. Well, of course, I'm partial to all the score of curtains
5:09
So I think I missed the music that Kander wrote because it's so deeply felt about the loss of Fred
5:16
But let's see. How about the entire score of Cabaret? Or the entire score of Chicago
5:21
both of which I can sing every word of, start to finish. Anytime
5:26
Well Kanner and Ebb I worked with when I did Kiss of the Spider Woman back in 1994 Right across the street of the Broadhouse Right exactly And then Stroh Susan Stroman just worked with her last year in POTUS and all the gals
5:38
came to support her. So, you know, Broadway is a community. We all, I mean, just getting to you at the mic, I ran into five people and we're talking about
5:48
when do you get it back, do you back on? What's the latest thing that we can see you on
5:52
We've got some ideas. It's, we're all, we're all want to help each other, and we're all in it together
5:57
We're all in it together, and we love each other. You know, getting to do this show, this sort of love letter to New York City was a joy
6:04
I've done a lot of New York City sets, but I've never tried to do one that was the entire damn city
6:08
And the challenge of it was incredible. And the show was written in such a way that it showcases a lot of the great locations of New York
6:15
To figuring out how to present that and then present it in a way that is both sort of the grit of New York but the glamour of New York was a great joy
6:22
I'm very excited. I'm excited because, first of all, I'm a New Yorker
6:26
And so I feel like my whole life has sort of been celebrating New York
6:30
and to be actually doing a show and to be following Mrs. Maisel
6:35
which for five years was a celebration of New York, this sort of feels like a peak moment for me
6:40
And to be doing it with these great composers and director, it's really fantastic
6:46
We set out to write a love letter to New York and to remind everyone, remind the entire world
6:52
what a glorious city this is. And with that company of actors
6:56
under Stroh's direction with Kander and Ebb and Lynn and Tommy and Sharon and my friend
7:03
Sonia we are hearts burst with pride. I've been coming to New York working here for 25 years and it's always been a place for
7:12
dreamers and that's what our show is. It's about dreamers hoping and trying to make the best of it and and that's what this city
7:22
is and that's what this show is
