Hello, I'm Richard Ridge for Broadway World
0:02
Three new stars have joined the Tony Award-winning best musical, Hades Town
0:06
Australian pop star Betty Puis, Betty Hu, who's making her Broadway debut, Philip Boykin and Solia Fyfer, and I caught up with all of them here at the Walter Kerr Theater
0:17
Okay, Hades Town. Tony Award-winning incredible musical people fly in from all around the world to see it here on Broadway
0:24
and now you're a part of this. What that means to you? Say it again
0:28
It sounded so good. Wow. It means the world to me. I'm really excited to be in a show that has such a loyal fan base
0:37
I mean, a lot of people who I meet at Stage Door have seen the show four, eight, 16 times
0:41
You know, people are really, really into the show, and I've seen lots of iterations of it
0:46
And so I think the honor it is to sort of be a part of this Lodgea community, I think, is really refreshing for me since my whole career to date has been like
0:58
it's my music and it's my willpower and the show does not go on if I'm not on
1:04
And so to be a part of something that exists outside of me and just getting to be a part of it feels really
1:10
it's like igniting my passion again in a really important way. Welcome home to Broadway and welcome back
1:15
Thank you. How does it feel? It feels amazing. It feels so, it was actually, I think, when the announcement came out, a dream of mine kind of came true where I felt like, I was like, wow, I'm really in this community
1:27
Oh my God, like everyone online really had me feeling like I was somebody, which was kind of a first where I was like, oh my God
1:35
There's all this support and all this excitement. And I think that's the most that you can really hope for in our business
1:43
And so I have felt just like so embraced by the fans of this show from Jump and by Eva, who has just been like the most welcoming
1:51
It was just like let me know whatever you need And I was like girl Tell me everything You done yes you done it all But this has returning to Broadway with this show
2:02
with the show that I have loved for so long and that I really think has kind of instilled a really steadfast faith in this art form
2:12
Yeah. It feels amazing. Well, I play Hades in Hades Town. And let's see, what do I love about him
2:23
I love everything about him. I love his journey from trying to please Persephone with material things
2:38
And he finds out that she, that's not what she wants. She wants his heart
2:45
She wants that love that they had in the beginning. when he met her in her mother's garden
2:53
and that's what she's after. But, you know, men sometimes they get blinded by their status
3:07
and their ego is, they think that's what women want from them
3:14
but what they want is their heart. I've had a lot of people at the stage door
3:20
come to me in tears, saying that they've been married for several years
3:27
and they wish that their husband could express the love that they know that they have inside
3:38
They wish that he could express it the way Hades does and rekindle what they once had
3:48
and maybe do that wonderful dance that we do in the show Because of your success as a pop star many people will come to see you who have never seen a live show before a live musical
4:01
And, you know, we all remember that first time. What that means to have introducing a whole new audience to the theater and to Hades Town and to watch you do this
4:10
It's strange to have people come to the show wearing the Betty Who shirts. Because I look out and I'm like, wait, but that's not me currently
4:17
because look at this wig. Like, this is not Betty Who. So I think that it's an interesting experience
4:24
It must be from an audience member's perspective because you come expecting to see me and you see a whole different
4:28
You get taken on a journey that's totally different. And so I think that, I mean
4:32
I remember my first, the first time I saw Wicked. I was 16 and I saw the touring company with Annalee Ashford
4:39
as Golinda changed my life. I'm obsessed with her. And so I remember seeing Wicked for the first time at 16
4:47
and feeling like totally taken over by the experience. And so if I am responsible for bringing somebody
4:54
to see their first musical theater performance on Broadway where it's the best version of it
4:59
on the entire planet, you know, that to me that I get to be a part of that still blows my mind
5:04
And I, especially young people, I love leaving an impression, because when you show kids the magic that theater can be
5:14
it stays with them for the rest of their lives, because I know what that feels. like. Can you sum up so far what it means to being a part of the Hades Town family
5:23
It is a responsibility that I take very, very seriously because I know that the fan base of this show
5:33
from what I've gathered seems to be a lot of people who were like me when they were kids
5:38
who kind of felt like they were on the outskirts of things, maybe didn't feel like they'd found
5:42
their group And I know what Eurydice means to you all and I want to provide that space Like my DMs are full of just you know beautiful messages
5:56
and the letters that I get from people who tell me what this show means to them
6:01
I don't take that lightly in the least. And so to be a part of this family is such an honor
6:07
To be a part of this legacy feels really, you know, how many people can say that they've been, you know, a part of the show
6:15
of a show that really stood the test of time in this way. You know, and it's a sisterhood too
6:21
There's all these people who have played Euritacy now, who each have been so unique and have their own individual take on the role
6:29
And so I share this with all of them. And, yeah, I'm honored beyond measure
6:37
I think it has changed my perspective about a lot of the things
6:42
and the reasons I got into doing what I do. I think that being a part of a show like this
6:48
that I ultimately believe is a metaphor for life and death and for, you know, believing in ourselves
6:57
and not letting negative self-talk drive our entire lives, which is such an artist's experience
7:05
And so I learn things from the show every night doing it that I still are processing and sinking in
7:10
And so I think that being a part of something that is this important and this beautifully told and extensively thought through
7:19
everything happens for a reason. And as an artist that, you know
7:23
is trying to build my own world so much of the time, being one of many who has this shared goal
7:28
of bringing this story to life, I think it will not only, has already
7:33
but will not only change me forever, but I think change the way I make aught forever. And I hope to, you know, it's also made me realize
7:39
how much I really, uh-oh, I think I love this. Uh-oh. you will be back
7:45
Yeah, I think so
