Hello, I'm Richard Ridge for Broadway World
0:02
The new comedy, Clue, which is based on the beloved board game and the iconic film
0:06
is getting ready to hit the road. We dropped by the rehearsal room to meet the company
0:12
How well did you know Clue before you started? I knew it pretty well. First of all, I grew up playing the board game
0:17
I had seen the film, you know, a thousand times, like everybody else in my generation, and I loved it
0:22
You know, I think the biggest challenge was figuring out how to pay homage to the film
0:26
to the board game, to everything that fans expect. but also make it feel authentic to me as a writer
0:32
and to be able to offer something new to audiences so that people could come in and experience something
0:37
both nostalgic and fresh. So that was the biggest challenge, but it was such a joy to do it
0:42
Oh, I feel so lucky to work with Sandy Rustin on this. This was the very first piece we ever collaborated on
0:48
This is the first one. So we were friends for years, and then this turned into a work partnership
0:53
that has blossomed into the most wonderful collaboration. And we work so tightly together
0:58
but we have so much fun and there's so much respect and generosity. It's a very special relationship
1:03
I'm excited to go on the road again. I love the road. I do
1:07
We go to different cities and we see everything that might have been there ever
1:12
And it's fabulous. And this cast is amazing. My first time on the road, actually, a career-long goal
1:22
and could not be more excited to be doing it with I mean icons like Joanna I an icon I an icon Yeah so truly so excited that this is the show to be starting out on this incredible journey on
1:36
Why is this so beloved clue? I think the ridiculousness. I mean, you look at that original ensemble of actors from the film, and it is pure genius
1:45
Of course, the movie, you know, didn't do well at the initial release, but it became a cult favorite
1:50
And I think it's partly because of the ensemble acting of all of the. comic geniuses
1:56
Absolutely. And we all love a whodunit. And this is the most classic who done it that there is
2:02
And it's, I mean, it's just, it's the most fun. It reminds me of playing the board game
2:07
when I was a kid. You know, it's the same experience. Why do you think this is such a classic
2:11
clue? Why is it so beloved? I think it's because it has iconic
2:15
lines. It's quick pace. It's fun. Everyone is in the most heightened
2:19
situation. You're locked in a room with a murderer. So what are you going to do
2:23
about it. I think that's just a recipe for a success. And you know
2:27
there's a huge nostalgia factor. I mean, having done this in Cleveland and at Paper Mill
2:31
and it being such a huge success, finding out that people really love the game, really love the movie
2:36
and it's a throwback for a lot of people, so they really enjoy the evening. Let's talk about Tourland
2:42
You've obviously toured before. A lot. This is my fifth tour. So, yeah, the last one I did was
2:47
Anastasia back in 2018. So, pre-patchel. Talk about packing for a tour What advice would you offer for him to put into that trunk This is good This is what I have said to him previously do not overpack your trunk because you are going to accumulate stuff on the road Just things that won fit in your luggage that you don want to take
3:06
Like your yoga mat, namaste, all that stuff. Yes. Blast. Bless. Blat. Hot plate. Yes
3:10
For cooking in hotel rooms because they love it when we do that. What are the go-to things you're like, I have to put in that trunk
3:17
You know, I put my ukulele because I'd like to be able to make little songs and things wherever I go
3:22
You know, I wish I could put my wife and daughter in the trunk, actually. But I've just put the ukulele and call that a day
3:29
I got some boots. I got a nice jacket. Yucolalee tracks with this
3:33
Thank you. It's the vibe. It's the vibe. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Let's talk about who you each play and what you love about them
3:39
I play the cook and the singing telegram girl and some others that you'll see along the way
3:46
How much fun is that when you get to play more than one person? It's exhilarating
3:49
It really is. And on top of that, there's so much physical comedy involved
3:53
that each one is truly its own person, and it's schlapstick comedy at its best
3:59
And you're always off changing into somebody else, right? Fast and furious, yes
4:04
Now, who do you play? I'll be playing Mr. Body and the motorist and the chief of police
4:09
So same sort of situation, changing outfits, characters, accents. And I think what I love the most is how sort of ridiculous
4:17
we can be with these larger-than-life characters. It was like the body is very noir gangster almost and it fun switching from that to mild Midwestern motorists essentially
4:31
So, yeah, that's what I got. And for you, I play The Cop, and he comes in a little bit later in the show, and what's so fun
4:38
about that is that they're already at the height of their hysteria, and I come in and essentially
4:44
am just bombarded by everything that's happening. So I just get to bounce and play off of everything that's already there, which is
4:51
is very, very easy to come into an insane situation with them already being in their heightened state, yeah
5:00
That's a great time to come in a little. You only got one costume. That's really great, though. The insanity ensues, right
5:06
So I almost feel like the audience kind of latches themselves onto that
5:10
be like, okay, well, maybe there's one sane person in the room. But, yeah, it's a great time
5:16
What are you looking forward to that first performance in Minneapolis? us. I, fingers crossed, but there's no better feeling than when you hear a full audience roaring with
5:24
laughter. It just, it never gets old. And especially, you know, we all say these things all the time
5:28
but it's not the easiest moment for everyone these days. And when you're able to just sit in the
5:32
back of a dark theater and hear the whole place laughing that everyone comes in and for 90 minutes
5:37
they're not thinking about anything else, but they are on the ride with us and they're laughing all
5:40
night. That is my greatest joy. This is the perfect show for right now. I think so too. And I think
5:47
people are just going to come in and have a wonderful time. And I hope they leave sore from laughing and that they have a great night with us
