I am so happy to have you sitting here in our room at Broadway World
0:13
What is today like for you? Well, I'm mostly happy to see you, honestly
0:17
because you calmed me down. Even though usually people get nervous for these
0:22
it's just lovely to see a lot of these younger people who have come to that point where I'm just so proud of them
0:29
and so happy for them. And it's very moving to see the journey in the theater
0:34
you know, when we were closed down for so many years. And you see these kids that were just starting out
0:39
five, six years ago, and now they're really blossomed, and it's very moving
0:44
You know, I adored this play and your performances. You know the night I was there. Yes
0:49
What's made this so special for you with working on this? Laura
0:52
Laura, Laura, Laura, Laura, Laura. She's a great actor in a way that was part of the tradition
1:00
that I aspired to be part of. And we're the same age
1:03
but I identify her as the kind of icon I had at that point in time
1:09
When you look at Geraldine Page and Colleen Dewhurst and Pamela Payton Wright and all of these women
1:16
who were exquisite stage actors and did television as well and film
1:22
And you forget that she has this incredible bulk of stuff behind her
1:29
including Academy Award nominations and all that, because she's the most hardworking
1:35
deeply, deeply present stage actress. So she has made the process life-changing
1:42
And then Dan Sullivan gave me my first job doing as an understudy in the Heidi Chronicles
1:48
So the fact that I would come back, you know, I've worked with him four times
1:53
and the other plays were Shakespeare in the middle. I did King Lear and also I did Julius Caesar with Denzel
1:59
So we had these very rich, but big experiences. This has been so intimate
2:05
And I love this play. I think Dave Auburn crafted something so meticulous
2:09
and so, for me and for Laura, endlessly fascinating how to weave our way through it
2:18
Take me back to Young, Young Jessica, like that first play you ever did, like in kindergarten or before
2:23
And what would older Jessica tell younger Jessica? Oh, well, I did You Can't Take It With You
2:28
at the community center in my small Connecticut town. I think I would tell myself
2:34
that it's a very, very rewarding career to be part of the community
2:39
And it's interesting that the first play I did was at a community center. There's something about the civic nature
2:44
of just having a family, like seeing you, you know, and seeing these people that you really feel
2:51
believe in this art form, that's the most rewarding thing. And that I could come into a community
2:56
where there's so many different artists that are finding some success or some home here
3:02
is the deepest thing to me
