Destroy the fast, destroy convention

Anything that hinders are a century. Hello, I'm Richard Ridge for Broadway World, the new musical Lampica
0:15
which tells the story of renowned artist Tamara Di Lampica. We'll open on April 14th here at the Longacre Theater
0:21
where we drop by to bring you a sneak peek and to meet the company. Welcome home to Broadway
0:31
How does it feel to be back? It feels so good. It feels so good and it feels so right
0:36
You know, it's just like the timing of the journey with the show
0:41
And I'm happy that I'm happy my return is with this piece
0:45
You don't get roles this deep, this nuance, this complex, this delicious
0:50
You know, I always say it's like the Valjean of four females, you know
0:55
And especially at this stage in my life, like you might get them when you're a little bit
0:59
younger, but to have it at 46 is just like a gift and a challenge, and it's just an embarrassment
1:09
of riches. I didn't know anything about this person, you know, Tomorrow de Limpica, who
1:17
You know, I mean, I'm not really an art buff anyway, but you soon learned that this woman
1:23
had just epic life of Bolshevik revolution two world wars you know escape aping across the Atlantic you know I don know It like why haven we heard about this person And it a real person
1:37
It's a real marriage, a complicated marriage, full of love and challenges and obstacles and misery and connection
1:48
I don't know. It's what you want to do is play. You know, there's a lot of fantasies that come to Broadway, which is great
1:55
But this is something more. It's a real historical show that hopefully everyone can empathize with and see themselves in somewhere
2:05
When they ask me to like to do Limpica, I was like, what is Limpica
2:09
I thought it was some kind of tasty dish of some sort. And then I opened the book
2:15
I'm like, oh my gosh, everyone should know this woman's work and story
2:19
And here we are. And I will add that what's wonderful about Limpica is that audiences not just in art houses are going to know who she
2:27
she is. Like the way it's presented, you're going to want some of her art, or we aspire to have
2:33
some of her art in our homes, for sure. I just also have to say, I'm sorry, one other adjective
2:39
for word is that this show is really sexy. There's that, too. I am. There's that too. I mean, from Eden Espinosa on down, it's an
2:52
embarrassment of riches to be able to work with this level of talent, commitment
2:57
medication Everybody is giving 125 every day And I blessed to be in this company Iron sharpens iron We all are trying to lift each other lift the story lift this team
3:14
This is such an incredible season to be on Broadway. Like people talk about it being crowded
3:18
I'm like, no, it's wonderful. We should be overwhelmed by the epic greatness of Broadway
3:24
And so I'm so blessed to be in this moment with this amazing group of artists
3:28
Well, I just actually can't wait. for people to be here with us
3:32
to have the audience, have the butts in the seats, and let them have the experience
3:36
of having this epic, epic musical wash all over them. Bring your tissues
3:43
Bring your tissues. Yeah, there's an electricity in this show that I've not experienced before
3:49
that's on the stage and in the audience. And when that lightning bolt
3:53
just like crashes into each other, it's like the epicness of like, you can see it right behind
3:57
It's like, we fill the proscenium with all that this woman was and like all that she wants us all to be in our time now
4:05
The experience has been wonderful. The show is incredibly special to me
4:09
and the cast and creative team are just so brilliant and so kind. It's really like a family
4:13
What a cast you have put together for this show, led by, of course, by Eden Espinoza, who was playing Lampica
4:20
Talk about your cast. I mean, they're so tall. They're so, there is, there just is an iconic quality to every single
4:29
a single person and I think musicals tend to take a long time to develop for many reasons but I think a big part of that is like finding the inevitable person for each role each seat is such a challenge And in this there like there no other
4:45
cast than our cast, and they're just right on. I feel the same way about our ensemble is we've gone through, and many thanks just to all
4:53
of the people who have gotten us here and finding an ensemble that is living in the portraits
5:00
and bring them to life every day is, again, I'm just, just going to keep saying it's a field day because it really is
5:05
What do you hope audiences take away after sitting through this? I hope they are thrilled to learn about this incredible woman
5:15
who I really want to gain the place she deserves in the culture
5:23
And I hope they see themselves in her struggles and in her story
5:27
And I hope that they come out of this a little braver and with shoulders thrown
5:32
back for what comes next. Yeah, I hope. I love that word, braver
5:38
I think, I think, I want people to walk out of this theater and feel like, yes, life is messy
5:47
and love is hard, but it's worth it. And it's, it's all that matters
5:53
And that's, that's, that's what Lampica is about. This minute, the future is here
6:06
It's tomorrow. Now
