No matter what curve on they grow
0:04
we can bet, we can dance, let some music grow. The new musical's the boomia that we all know
0:13
Real, real women have curbs. Okay, okay. I'm good. I'm Richard Ridge for Broadway World
0:23
The new musical Real Women Have Curbs, which is based on the iconic film
0:27
will begin performances on April 1st at the James Earl Jones Theater
0:31
and we drop by the rehearsal room to bring you a sneak peek and to meet the company
0:35
I know my team, and we're the best. We make it work
0:40
It might be crazy, but we'll get it done. A little lipstick, a little stitching
0:46
A little cheese, man, a little , proudly on our mission. So we saw
0:52
We saw. Make it work, make it work. Make it work, make it work for a big promotion
1:00
Make it work, make it work. Make it work. Feeder on the brakes
1:05
200 psalons and no mistakes. This musical is incredibly personal to me
1:12
because it just hits home, first of all, being an immigrant. But also, you know, the fact that I get to pay amage
1:21
and honor my mother, who is an immigrant, who is a seamstress. And, you know, that's really, it doesn't
1:27
get as personal as that and that I get to do it to the thing
1:32
that I love the most musicals. This one is also a story that
1:35
uplifts and celebrates women specifically brown, Latin, women of all shapes and sizes. And I
1:41
think all of us in the cast relate to that so much and these stories so
1:45
much that it's hard not to want to put every ounce of our hard work and effort into this more than any project that we worked on Talk about sharing the stage with these women I could cry
2:00
They are so amazing. Coming into this was a little daunting for me because a lot of them have built a sisterhood already
2:09
from doing it at A.R.T. together. And so coming into this as a newbie, I was a little nervous
2:14
but they just embraced me with the most open of arms. and I've felt so much support and love from them
2:21
and they are incredible to watch every day, and I learn so much every day
2:25
What's making it so special for you with working on this? All the incredible women
2:29
all those women that you just saw right now, all those beautiful Latina women
2:33
that are so talented, that are making their Broadway debut, and I get to be here and say I was there
2:39
I knew them when. I don't know what it is about this
2:44
but I feel like I already know you. Isn't it strange? stranger you make you feel at home
2:52
I didn't believe in Najibu, but I know you're feeling it too
2:57
Because I already, already, already, already, already, already, already, already know you. Already know you
3:02
Already, already, already, already, already, already know you. Already know you. It's having new family here, you know, but also the, the piece itself is really awesome
3:12
We, I feel like we inspire a lot of people, at least that's the feedback we're getting
3:17
and there's nothing that makes you feel great than having that feedback
3:22
I think the hardest thing to do in life is to do a new Broadway musical
3:27
But I think that this show feels like it sings and dances from the play
3:34
And then so when you have this gorgeous score and you have all these brilliant minds coming together to make this, it feels very authentic
3:42
And I think that that really rare and special Yeah Well I am a curvy Mexican immigrant and I originating the role of a curvy Mexican immigrant That so big
3:55
And growing up, I didn't see someone like myself on a Broadway stage
3:59
So now I am providing that for my community, and I feel so blessed
4:04
For me, a queer woman, Mexican woman, to represent my communities is so special
4:10
And also, for me, this is like body positivity. it is about immigration, it is about women's empowerment
4:16
the whole theme of the show, all of these themes together, and it's my Broadway debut, just makes it so, like so many multi-levels
4:25
Yeah. For you. I think I'm just so excited and grateful about the fact that there are so many different types of people up on that stage
4:33
and that's very rare in a Broadway show. You don't see different ethnicities, different body types
4:39
different sexualities, all grouped in one. and I think when you do see a show like that, it's very special and it stays with you
4:46
especially if you're seeing it in a pivotal young age, you can see that and be like, I can do that
4:53
I see me, you know, and I'm so grateful. I am 100% The In The Heights Generation
4:59
Like, I think nothing imprinted on me more than hearing clack, clack, clack, clack, in 2008 in my middle school theater teacher's room
5:07
when she was like, home over here, you'll love this. And I just know that with this show, we are going to be that show for a whole other generation
5:15
And that, I mean, nothing could be more meaningful than that. And I think with my role specifically, I get to speak Spanish, English, and quiche on stage
5:24
And that, I think, is pretty groundbreaking. So I'm excited about subverting people's expectations
5:31
I'm very excited. It's a surreal moment for me, you know? 30 years in the industry, and here I am
5:37
Oh, that's awesome. Yeah and I so excited I mean I been telling everyone but I so excited that the show that I getting to make my Broadway debut and is one that I like believe in the message so much and that I think people are going to be leaving feeling good and also feeling like they learned something about themselves and the community and that they understand people better when they leave And I think that so valuable to me
5:56
It's funny because we wrote the whole first draft of this before we'd even met in person. We wrote it over Zoom because we live in different countries
6:03
And it wasn't until I went and saw her on tour and I met her at one of her concerts and it was like, we'd known each other
6:08
We had. Virtually. But it's just surreal because it's a very intimate experience writing a show together
6:16
The chemistry was undeniable. It was the first time we met. It was supposed to be like, do we get along
6:22
And we already left that meeting, I think, with four-song ideas. He was like, done, done, check, check
6:26
Well, I get to work with Lisa Lumer, who is just, she's an extraordinary playwright
6:31
And she and I share an interest in the stories of women who are trying to make their way in a very weird world
6:37
and she's got humor and heart, and she's infused that into the characters that she's created
6:43
which are in turn based on Josefina's play and movie, and they were created from real life as well
6:49
So everybody here feels heightened and fun for musical, but very real and very relatable
6:55
Flying away, I'll make her see that I'm going to change the world
7:06
and still be the daughter she wants me to be. Could I fly away with the wind on my side
7:16
I hope that I'll fly with them on my side
7:36
Thank you
