Hello, I'm Richard Ridge for Broadway World
0:06
The hilarious new comedy, The Shark is Broken, has come to Broadway
0:10
and we're here on opening night to celebrate with the company, led by the show's three stars, Alex Brightman, Colin Donald
0:16
and making his Broadway debut, Ian Shaw. Welcome home to Broadway. It's opening night, how do you feel
0:23
I feel great, namely because you have let my family go, and so I will absolutely gracious
0:29
give this interview. I'd like to thank the NYPD for finding my family. Richard has taken them
0:36
hostage, but gracious to let them go if I would do this interview. So I am doing this under duress
0:40
Are your parents here tonight? They are, thankfully. My parents made it. My entire family is here
0:46
which is great, and all of my chosen family is here. My friends and people I've worked with
0:51
Alex Timbers is a guest of mine this evening. And so, yeah, a very, very great group of lovely people
0:56
What is it meant to to bring this show to Broadway? Well, I mean, just you even saying that, I can hardly believe that it's true
1:05
You know, however, you know, calm I try to feel, it is very exciting, yeah
1:10
It is opening night, my friend. How do you feel? Overwhelmed I been emotional about it I held it together for a little bit but just you know every opening is so spectacular and this is no different I just feel overwhelmed with happiness to be here Sharing the stage with Colin and Alex what that been like for you here rehearsing with them and then playing this show with them
1:34
Well, it's a joy. It's like playing tennis with a great player
1:40
You pick up your game. They're terrific actors. They're wonderful in this show
1:46
I couldn't be more thrilled to be working with them. They're very funny offstage, which is terrific as well
1:51
as well. I feel there's a lot of chemistry going on. So, yeah, I'm very, very happy about that
1:59
I couldn't have asked for two better co-stars who are just so
2:04
brilliant at playing, and the chemistry between us is so palpable, and it's just been a joy
2:11
It's the best. They're a human trampoline net. You know, it's like they're..
2:16
Or actually, rather, they're more like a trapeze net. So I feel very comfortable doing these dangerous high wire acts, knowing that they're underneath me
2:26
and I will be underneath them to catch them if they're ever in any danger. So I never feel really all that hazardous doing all these crazy things
2:34
because I know I have these two guys that got my back. And that started from day one. And Colin and I have known each other for a while, and have never worked together
2:41
and this is like, I can't think of a better opportunity to do it for the first time
2:44
And Ian is Ian. Ian is, I mean, legendary in his own right
2:48
and it's in his genetics. And getting to work with both of them is a dream that I didn know that I had And now I just look forward to many more three starting with three of us What do you hope audiences take away Colin after seeing this
3:01
Because you listen to them every night, just laughing and having the time of their life during this show
3:05
Yeah, I think, I mean, first and foremost, we want them to be entertained and to laugh and to have a great time
3:11
And then, you know, it's the brilliance of Ian and Joseph's script that one minute we can be making them live
3:20
and then the next minute we're really getting him thinking about these men who are, you know, revealing a lot about themselves
3:26
It's great. It's terribly exciting, you know, to be here at the top of the world effectively
3:30
for what we do, Broadway is the pinnacle. And I've got to pinch myself to realize that my show is here on Broadway
3:37
And it's a magical thing. For me, you know, to see Ian portray his father
3:44
and to create this incredible energy with this guy playing dry for us
3:49
Alex Brightman is remarkable. Conraddle just embodies Shida. It's just a magical thing
3:56
Welcome to Broadway. How does it feel? Well, I've never been to New York before. So, never mind Broadway
4:01
So it feels amazing. Yeah. And I've only just got off the plane as well and dashed here in the rain like this
4:07
And so I'm a bit, it's a bit like one of those dreams where you're not wearing any trousers
4:10
I feel a bit like that. But no, it's marvelous. It's, well, as I just said
4:15
it's the apex of it all Broadway, isn't it? You can get any better than that What I loved doing it with this team Both originally back in London but also here I mean it a killer
4:29
team. It's world class. And everyone is pushing. Pushing, pushing. I've noticed the game shift slightly
4:37
up since we've come to America, you know. We never thought we were doing
4:42
anything by half measures in the UK. But you come here and you go, I don't know
4:46
I don't know. We're tightening again. Okay, well, tick tightening. And I suppose this one keeps sending you to tighten
4:51
tighten, I suppose it's marginal gains, isn't it? And you keep going
4:56
How do you describe this show when people ask you, like, what is the shark is broken
5:00
How do you describe it? Well, I say that it's behind the scenes of jaws
5:06
when the shark is broken. You've got three very distinctive actors with different personalities at different stages of their career
5:14
So it gets quite explosive. But it could be an office in a way
5:21
I mean, I think people relate to it because they understand the boredom in the work environment when things aren't happening
5:30
And they can also understand when, you know, like when we were trapped in COVID, when tensions erupt when you're sort of confined to a small space
5:39
So it is about an extraordinary thing, the filming of jaws, but I think people relate to it
