Hi, Broadway World. We've been expecting you. I am Katie Lynch here on the red carpet of the opening night of Grey House on Broadway at the Lyceum Theater. Let's get to chatting with our thrilling casting creative team
0:30
It's been really fun. It's always fun to be in a room with Joe Mantello. So that's my personal ride that I love to go on whenever I can
0:38
And then bringing it, you know, we worked and worked in the rehearsal room. But it's not until you put it in front of an audience that you really know
0:45
if some of the spooky stuff is going to work or some of the humor is going to work
0:51
And it is, I especially like the humor that runs all the way through it
0:56
I always like the comedy. But then my character has a real interesting
0:59
interesting arc. I have a real interesting journey that I've come to find out in the rehearsal room
1:06
Some of the stuff I didn't necessarily know or understand on the page until we got in, you know
1:12
got it on its feet. But I really enjoy the character and what she inevitably has to go through
1:21
in her own personal journey through the play. And what is it like, I mean, you're a true Broadway
1:28
legend you've done so many unique and different things but this in itself is a
1:34
unique show to bring to Broadway I know I give kudos to Joe and the producers on that I mean to to go out on a limb and and mount something like this for a Broadway run is it been really inspiring to have them supporting us and you know like helping us bring it to life
1:55
And so I can, I thank all those people for taking a chance on it
2:00
Why has it been like for you during previews through all of this
2:04
finally getting an audience for a show that I feel like is so dependent on it
2:09
an audience? Well, it's really fascinating. You know, no one audience is a monolith. So I try to write for
2:16
every single person that's in the theater, and I want them to find themselves in the piece
2:20
And throughout the preview process, we've been able to shape it and sharpen it and sort of
2:26
connect threads that might have been buried underneath the ground a little bit. It's been great
2:32
It's such a necessary critical part of the process. Well, I was really curious what an audience was
2:37
going to think. When we were rehearsing, I mean, look, it's all those things
2:42
It's weird and it's subversive and it's unique and it defies sort of the expectations that people have for sure
2:52
But there was really the missing element of like what is an audience going to do
2:57
because their part is so important in the play, an audience is really culpable to be a part of like what we're doing
3:05
And so it's been, I've been really surprised how into it everybody has been
3:12
It's been really great. It's been so much fun to do the show
3:17
Matinees, Saturday nights, they're all fun. You know it been a really really great experience with an audience which is good because it been a hard show It a hard show It like hard on people It a lot of learning new things and trying things and trying to figure out how it works It been trying but it been really really rewarding to do it for the audience
3:40
Congratulations. First and foremost, Broadway debut, opening night. What is going through your mind right now
3:48
Right now, I'm just going to go with the flow. I'm actually very nervous. I'm sweating a bit
3:54
I have to be honest with you, but I'm very excited. Everyone is so beautiful and supportive, and I'm so excited that people will finally get to see our production
4:03
We've been working on it so hard for months and months, so I'm very excited to, you know, to have it be out there, let audiences see it
4:12
What are you most excited for the audience's reaction to the show
4:19
Oh, yes, definitely. I'm very excited about the audience's reaction. It's very different when you're filming
4:25
I can sit in the audience and see everyone's reaction to my performance on screen
4:29
On the stage, it's live. There are more risks. You're really on edge
4:35
You're really responding to the audience. Their laughter, their screams, it really makes you feel stronger
4:41
It makes us as an ensemble feel stronger. It's such a different experience
4:45
We definitely play off of the audience a lot. This play is as comedic as it is haunting
4:53
So sometimes they'll have an audience who lose more chuckle and sometimes they'll have people who are a little more spooks
4:59
So it's interesting to feel that dynamic and play off of the reactions that we're getting and the energy in the room
5:06
It such an energetic show that is super dependent on the pace and energy of what we feeling So it new and interesting every night How are you feeling tonight Happy opening Oh my God It just it so thrilling and exciting and like a dream come true
5:22
I mean, I, like, I had actually stopped dreaming about it. That's how, you know, it's like amazing
5:27
It's amazing that I'm here. And to be in a play that is so incredible, that the writing is just
5:35
it's just, like, it's so small. it's so fun and it's so soulful it's just and then Joe Mantello it's like he's just a dream director he's so smart and he gets like it's almost he'll he'll do something and it's like wow I'm surprised that wasn't in the script like he's just so intuitive and just things that he that he comes up with it's like oh that's almost inevitable so it's just it's in the actors
6:09
Everybody on this team is to love this. A play and a new play is thrilling
6:15
and the idea of having its first Broadway production is incredibly special
6:21
And to do that with Levi and Joe is a massive honor and a responsibility
6:27
And also hitting on after shocked and somebody get hot, which are so different from each other
6:33
to play with a play that has a sort of darker spirit
6:38
and an undertone that's more of like a psychological drama, it was just a new sort of terrain to play with, which was great
6:46
It's been a while. I mean, I kind of go back to The Pillow Man, which was a while ago, one of my favorite experiences
6:54
So this is another one
