Hi everyone. We're here with Kaylin Allen
0:08
At the Freaky Teaky on 44th Street with Survival Jop. on the Broadway Podcast Network and Broadway World
0:15
We are so excited to talk to you. Thank you so much for joining us
0:20
Congratulations on Elf. Well, thank you. How are you feeling today? You look amazing
0:24
We're here for the coat. Thank you, darling. You know, I'm trying to give a little bit of festive
0:29
It's giving Chris. It's giving Elf. Yes, you see the show. I saw Elf this week, and my God, I'm in the Christmas spirit
0:37
You are phenomenal. We feel your energy from the stage, so congratulations
0:42
We know that this has been a dream of yours, and we're going to definitely chat about it
0:45
as we get into this combo. And of course, we're huge fans of you since Ellen
0:51
to now on your Christmas album, on Broadway, on your Netflix. You have so much to talk about
0:57
But before we dive into that, can you tell us your love? least favorite survival job you had before
1:01
you got to the big time? I know exactly what it was
1:05
I've had a lot of jobs. Oh, yes. Same. Working actor. I remember
1:09
one year I was working from Kansas City. And there was a theater company called Starlight Theater in Kansas City
1:17
A lot of national tours will go by Starlight, whatever. And during the summer, they were doing the summer camp
1:22
but they hired me to be a teacher, basically, a counselor. And
1:26
it was called to Act Like an Animal Camp. And we had to, first we would
1:29
have the children at the theater, then we would take them over to the zoo
1:34
What I learned during that, I'm not good with a whole bunch of kids. That's not my forte
1:39
Acting like animals, number one. We went over to the zoo. Somebody, one of the kids left their water bottles
1:46
I went and tried to go find it in the Africa section. I lost the kids. It was a whole mess
1:50
Why they sent you to the Africa section? Right. Wrong. Wrong. And it was hot down there
1:56
I was like, y'all got heaters down here. Because why's the whole zoo normal temperature until you get to Africa
2:04
That don't make sense. Oh, my goodness. Okay, so we don't like acting like animal camp for survival jobs
2:11
I don't need to be nobody's camp counselor. No, but do you have a survival job that maybe was like a good one along the way that sort of like brought you to where you are now
2:20
Oh. Okay, so speaking of survival jobs, so something that I was very intentional about growing up was that I knew that if I ever needed a
2:29
survival job. I wanted to be able to go in and be the boss. So I only took jobs that led me to
2:34
be a supervisor or a manager. So I was a supervisor at AMC theaters when I was in college
2:40
Shout out. Temple? Yes. Right across the street from campus, actually. It used to be called
2:44
the Pearl, then the AMC bought it and then they redid it. Yeah, because it was a quick commute
2:48
Yeah, real quick commute. And so I worked over there as a supervisor, but that would probably be
2:54
one of the most fun jobs. And I think because I had access, I'd always
2:59
been like a movie geek, but the fact that I could just watch every single movie, like I watched every single movie that came out
3:05
Free tickets. Yeah, absolutely. And I ate a whole bunch of hot dogs. I was going to say, free snacks too
3:09
Oh, yeah. Ain't no, they weren't free. You got a discount, though. Oh, really
3:14
Yeah, I used to be down there tearing up that Coca-Cola. The Slushies
3:18
Oh, yeah. I love a movie theater thirty. Oh, yes. The blue one
3:22
I love it. Oh, no, I only do Coca-Cola. The Coca-Cola Slushy
3:25
I don't like, I don't like fruit-flavored pop. Okay. Yeah, soda if you don't live in the Midwest
3:32
For those of us in the East. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. For those East Coasters. Yes, correct
3:36
Correct. But yeah, I don't believe like orange soda, no, keep it. Great. Nope. Don't want it
3:40
No. No. No pineapple. Oh, no. Absolutely not. I'm dead. So, Kaelin, I was watching some interviews with you
3:46
And speaking of being a boss, we all know you've been on the Ellen show, right
3:50
You were on there and whatnot. But what I discovered from your interview that you wrote your own contract or you made your own
3:57
agreement for the first contract? Yes. Yes. Yes. And you had your own office? Can you just describe that a little bit for us
4:02
Okay. So everybody knows mainly that I started at the Ellen Digener's show after making food reaction videos
4:09
Yeah. And so the original deal that was offered to me was that I was just going to make videos from college at that time, which was in Philadelphia
4:16
So you're going to send the videos in. Exactly. And I would send them in and they would decide if they wanted to put it on the air or whatever
4:21
And I knew in that moment that I was like, well, if I moved to L.A., they will use me more
4:27
And so then in the contract, I put in a relocation. And then that was how then I moved to L.A
4:34
And I finished school in L.A. And then once I got there, then I was just kind of just in this apartment
4:39
And because I was working at L&2, but also in school, I always tell people it was like a Hannah Montana life
4:44
Like I was like, during the day, I was like at Ellen and at night, I was in class
4:49
But I, but the thing. Yeah, people know because it was all on the news and stuff at that point
4:54
But I knew that I was like, one, I'm a cop corn. I like to work
4:58
And I was bored. I was like, I'm just sitting in this apartment all day and there's nothing to do
5:02
And so then I was like, well, if I asked for an office at the studio and be like, yeah
5:08
I want to come in a shadow and watch and stuff, I knew that they would also then be able
5:11
to see me on the daily basis and use me for even more stuff. So then I asked for an office as well
5:17
That is so iconic, just like, you know, setting the things that you need to set to move
5:23
yourself forward because you have to advocate for yourself. and we talk about that a lot
5:27
that like nobody's going to advocate for you the way you are. Well, I tell people all the time
5:30
and I know this because it doesn't matter what space that I go in. I am a visionary from the jump
5:36
Even when it came into elf, like I was immediately like, okay, who's doing marketing
5:41
I'm like, who's working on social stuff? That's my world. You know, I can assist
5:45
I can help. I can give guidance into what that looks like. You know what I mean? And I think it's just because anything that I'm involved in
5:52
I want it to be successful at any point. And I also believe in supporting each other and working as a community
5:57
I don't believe in. I'm very collaborative in that. So even at Ellen, like I was very much working with EPs and writers and producers and in every single sector
6:06
And I'm not a talent that just comes in and does the talent job. And like, wait for your roster
6:10
No, I don't have time for that. That's iconic. That is amazing. So Elf
6:15
so let's talk about Elf. So I did see on Instagram that you were saying, you know
6:19
being on Broadway feels like home. So can you talk a little bit about how
6:24
Elf came to be, how this project came to you? Yes. So the funny thing is a lot of people don't know this, but my degree is in theater
6:31
So it's like I've been doing shows my entire life, you know what I mean? So once I went and did Ellen and it's moved to Hollywood, it felt like I had kind of almost
6:40
given up that part of my life. You know what I mean? And I struggled with that, especially when it came to the Food Reaction videos, because I was
6:46
very much in the space of being like, these are silly. Like, I'm in school getting this degree to be an actor
6:52
what do you mean that it's this one minute video of me talking about some food
6:55
that is giving me my claim to fame, you know? And I think it's taking time for me
6:59
to understand that that was the door to open. And so the way that Elf came about
7:04
is that I actually learned about it the day before the audition. So my friend Brandon Michael Nase
7:08
who works in the Broadway community as well. He called me, he was like, Elf has auditions tomorrow
7:12
You should call your people and get them to get you an audition And so then I said absolutely And I called and they reached out to production They got me the audition And when I went in I didn go in there in the space of being like oh here I am
7:26
I got this many followers or like, you should ask me like, I literally, I went in
7:31
I did, don't let me go from Shrek as my audition song, which I had done donkey in high school
7:36
So I had to really go into my music notes.com and pull that out
7:40
You know what I mean? We right. Had to pull that sheet music. I was like, it was funny, I was calling
7:45
France, I was like, now it's 16 bars, right? That's what I got to do. How am I going to do this
7:49
And so really, mapping it out. I'm still stuck on music notes. I know, right? Throwback, throwback
7:54
That's where I had the sheet music. I already bought. And so then I went in, I did the audition
7:58
I did the car back the next day, and then that's when they offered me the wrong. Amazing
8:02
Well, congratulations. You made it home. Yes. Oh! When I think of home
8:08
Yes. Okay, I thought we were going to get some more notes. I thought we were going to get some more notes
8:12
I thought you were going to sing the Whitney version. I know right. I know you was listening to the Whitney today
8:16
I'm obsessed. Okay, anyway, can we talk about the rehearsal process for this is your first Broadway show
8:22
Correct. Was it what you expected it to be? Like, can you just give us the detail
8:25
What's like audition? I'm rehearsing a Broadway show and then coming to life in front of an audience
8:30
Like, how beautiful is that? I think it was easier than I thought it was going to be
8:34
Oh, okay. And I, but I think that I also want to give a lot of credit. So growing up, I did a program called Music Theater, Kansas City
8:41
At that time, it was called M-T-Y-P. but it was essentially a Broadway training theater organization, basically
8:47
And we used to put up shows in a week. So like we would start Monday and we would go all day long each day
8:53
Okay, New York City Center. Oh, no, right? And put up a show. And I had done that from, since my first musical was 13
9:00
So I had done that since I was 14 up until I graduated high school
9:04
So I was kind of used to that rigorous schedule and having to learn quickly and do stuff like that
9:09
I also did speech and debate growing up, so I'm very good at memorizing. I have photographic memory, so that's not hard
9:15
Yeah. But also, I just think the work ethic of who I am, I always come into it prepared
9:20
So, like, I came into rehearsals with the lines already memorized and already knowing the songs as well
9:26
So the only hard part was the tap. Because tap was not in the audition
9:33
Okay, we were not aware of that. And I remember we got in, and Ricky was like
9:38
okay, so we need to learn the tap for the finale. I said, who's doing that? I said, I don't know
9:42
about that honey that's not that's not in my repertoire okay it was funny and so but one thing about me
9:49
is that I am not a quitter and immediately after like because I struggled with the tap at
9:54
first and then I went on Amazon and I bought me a tap board so I would go home every night after
9:58
rehearsal and I would rehearse that tap thing and if you come see the show oh baby I'm tapping
10:02
I will sign off he is tap and tap and tap on Saturday oh well come on baby because I'm not
10:07
watching tap I know okay where your neighbor's like excuse me what are you doing and
10:12
Oh, no, they can't hear me. I was on my terrorist. Great. With the tap board
10:18
Yes. Iconic. Just looking at the New York City skyline. Yeah, tibety tap tap, tap, baby
10:22
Oh, my God. Tiffany tap tap to New York. Shout out. I love that
10:27
Let's talk to the audience and let them know why they need to go see Elf
10:31
Tell us, tell us why. Why should people go buy tickets right now to go see the show
10:35
You know, I think a lot of that message is in the show itself
10:40
There's a line that says it's never. too late to grow. And I think
10:44
when you grow up, it is very easy to lose that Christmas spirit or the meaning of it
10:50
And I think what's beautiful about Elf is that you feel it as soon as you walk in
10:55
You know, I know before the show starts, they play Christmas music throughout the theater, gets you into the mood. You get
11:00
the Mariahs, you get the Salines, you get the Michael Boublez, you know what I mean
11:05
And it is, I will say this, and not just because I'm in the show, it is entertaining from the moment it starts
11:11
to the moment it ends. I sign off on that. There is not a moment that it drops off
11:16
There's not a moment where you're like, ooh, can we get through this number? That doesn't happen. You know what I mean
11:20
It is absolutely just fun and energetic and full of so much Christmas spirit
11:24
There are so many different surprises. Some of my favorite moments are at the end
11:28
You know, in the movie, the slave flies of everybody, and I always say that is the moment
11:33
where it doesn't matter how many time I watch that movie, I burst into tears every time
11:38
And I can promise you it happens in this show. It sure does
11:42
What's the biggest reward for you so far for being in this production
11:47
Community. Boom. I think it is very, what I have really enjoyed is the difference from working in TV and film
11:54
where you're kind of almost always separated. There isn't much time to really work together because everybody is never one called
12:01
at the same time. And usually you're just going in. Like for instance, like I did this Netflix movie Meet Me Next Christmas
12:07
And all my scenes were with like Christina and DeVal. and Christina Milian and DeValle Ellis
12:13
And like, but Pentatonics is in the movie. I didn't have any scenes with Pentatonics
12:17
So I never saw them. You know what I mean. Is he Scott? No, I never saw God. I know Scott, but I, I never saw each other on set, you know
12:24
But here, the fact that we have spent so much time together and we've become so close
12:29
And actually, so like, I got so excited about doing like an opening night gift
12:34
and stuff like that. Like, I'm treating the entire cast to a private screening of Wicked, actually
12:38
Oh! Opening night. So, and, but the fact that we're able to, to have these moments together and spend them together
12:44
It's like, it's something that I don't really get to participate. That's so beautiful
12:49
Also, speaking of Wicked, you're giving Alphaba. Thank you. Defying gravity, truly
12:54
No, I love, that's what I love about the Broadway community, because even Samantha and I, we're not on Broadway
12:58
but we've been going to these carpets and whatnot, and people are recognizing us and like, Laura Benanzee
13:03
sorry, Laura, Benanti, excuse me, girl. Call and Kaylan. She was like, she was so welcoming to us yesterday, you know
13:11
Because she remembered us from another carpet. And I just feel like that's what it's so beautiful about this community
13:14
It's like everyone has a place. No matter if you're in wardrobe or if you're an actor or if you do the carpet or if you're a reviewer
13:21
Everyone has a place and it's part of the community. So anyway, you talked about your Christmas movie
13:25
Meet me next Christmas. And you have a holiday album. You are the new Mariah
13:29
You're taking over Christmas. How do you have a Broadway show, a movie, and an album
13:33
You know, honestly, I think it was fate. Because first, so the album I've been working on for three years
13:39
And originally it was going to come out last year. year. Oh, wow. But then the movie, when we shot the movie, they told me that the movie wouldn't
13:45
come out until this year. So then I pushed the album to come out with the movie. It makes sense
13:48
Smart business, man. Exactly. I was like, well, then let's not release the album until next year. And then I was not expecting Elf to come along
13:55
So I always, I branded it as a very Kaelin Christmas. A very Kaelin Christmas
13:59
We love. Obsessed at that. Very Kailen Christmas. So you got to work with icons, Shoshana Bean
14:05
Oh, that's my girl. Right. How was it working in a studio with someone like that and Michael and, and
14:10
And what's your favorite track on the album? Oh, my favorite track on the album, it changes
14:16
Okay. Right now it's probably Go Santa Go, which is technically the first track on the album
14:21
That is one of my favorites. I wrote that song from just a voice note
14:26
But it has been absolutely amazing Shoshana. I actually met in L.A
14:30
I was hosting a gala for the gay men chorus of L And she was singing And I sang as well I done Hercules Go the Distance and she stood on the side and watched me and we spoke it and we just became friends
14:45
after that. So then when the Christmas album came along, I was like, you have to be on this song called Yes Mary New. You have to be able to, you have to be on this song, you know. And she has been
14:52
so gracious and now we neighbors because you know Hill's Kitchen is right across the street from L. So it is great. I adore Shoshana. Oh, I love that. And the album is you're so talented
15:01
Kayling like you're rapping on there there's like a little bit of musical theater is there is
15:05
some R&B going low I'm obsessed well that was the goal of the album
15:09
so you know the album's called Christmas Memories and basically what it does is it
15:13
is a time capsule of my experience of Christmas through the years
15:17
it starts at adult Kalen and it goes all the way back to a child Kately so we
15:21
started like funk and pop it and we go to R&B and then we go into a power ballad
15:25
and then we end with a gospel you know what I mean because that's where I first
15:29
started and so it's truly a journey in an experience and I wanted it to be theatrical
15:35
One thing that I was very intentional about was that I wanted it to feel like me from start
15:40
to finish. I love that. That's so amazing. And there's so much intention behind that versus people who are just like, I'm going to make an
15:46
album because I can sing. It's just like so well thought out. So you talked about working with Shoshana Bean
15:52
You've worked with so many icons and met so many, so many amazing people like Oprah
15:57
Michelle Obama. You're like, yeah. Keep it going. Yeah, Nick, get the list going
16:03
Can you share some advice that maybe you've learned from somebody along your path
16:08
That was something that stuck out to you? I think it's more so what I've watched
16:12
Okay. Two, one, working at the Ellen DeGeneres show, I was able to watch people work at the top of their craft and the care that they put into it
16:22
I always say it was like having a master class. I think that's what I enjoyed about watching
16:25
especially when it comes to creating content and developing content. And then second, I would, going back to the Oprah
16:33
watching Oprah work. I tell people all the time, what I admire about Oprah is that she does it all
16:39
She'll do everything. She just shows up and she does it. And that's why she has been able to remain successful and have the stability
16:46
I would say the same about Beyonce. You know what I mean? And I think for me, I've told people that it has inspired me to never get to a point
16:53
where I become lazy, where I stop caring. You know, I went to the Celine D
16:58
on premiere and I watched that documentary and to watch how much she cares about her fans and the craft and what she does is like I want to always have that same drive in myself that no matter how old no matter how successful I get no matter how many awards I get and I kind of even do that now you know it can be very tiring like for instance like I am used to going to bed at 1030 by the time I get home from the show now I'm probably not in bed until midnight yeah but every time I get to the theater
17:28
I'm usually pretty tired then right before the show. I always have this thing that I remind myself that I may be tired
17:35
but for the people that are sitting in that audience, this is their first time. And I have to give them the same amount of energy
17:42
the same amount of funny, the same amount of excitement that I gave the night before
17:45
The tap has to be tapping. Exactly. The show has to be exactly the same amount of energy
17:50
Because I remember going to shows, and I go to like a matinee, I'd be like, they mark it
17:55
You know what I mean? Been there. I think we've all been there, unfortunately. You will never get that for me
18:00
I will always and forever more, no matter how many shows it is, how many shows I've done that day
18:04
no matter how late I was up, I will always give 110%. I'm excited
18:08
I have a matinee on Saturday. I'm coming. All right. 1 p.m. I love that so much because it's just like deep rooted in your passion for what you do that you'll never lose the drive
18:19
Like you said, no matter how successful, no matter how much money, how many awards. Like we come back to going back to your album, like little kid, the little kid us, little kid version
18:28
of us. Yeah. And you can't lose that because then if you lose that, then what's the point of all of it
18:32
Correct. Then what was the point of the hustle in the first place? That's our final question before we go into a really fun game. Okay
18:40
You are getting your master's in journalism? Yes. Currently. Currently. Doing a show and getting your master's
18:46
Yes. And the funny thing, so I've been doing it for a while. Because of my crazy schedule, I only do a class of semester. So I'll actually be done in May. So I actually took a leave of absence to do elf. So I'm not in classes currently, but I go back in January
18:58
And I'll finish in May, and then I will have my master's in journalism from NYU
19:02
Congratulations. I think that's a testament because, like, you're doing this already. So, like, people may ask, why do you need to get a degree, you know, but you're actually going
19:10
You're going to be the best of the best. Absolutely. And I saw an interview where you were talking about manifesting your own daytime talk show or a variety show
19:16
So if you could have five guests living or dead to be on your variety show, who would you choose
19:22
Oh, well, definitely I'm bringing my girl, Ricky Lake. me and Ricky do a podcast
19:26
called Raised by Ricky. She's coming to see Elle. I adore her
19:30
She would definitely be one of my first guests. Icon. Yes, yes. I adore Ricky
19:34
The original Tracy term. You know it, baby. Yeah, before it was a musical
19:38
Right. Uh-huh. Yeah, so definitely, um, Whitney Houston. Come on. If I could have Whitney
19:44
Come on. Definitely Oprah. Definitely Ellen, definitely Beyonce. Oh, wow. Yeah. Those are my top
19:49
Right out of 60. Yeah. You need you had another one. Oh. Well, technically, I've already worked on her
19:54
but I would love to. I would want to do a more in-depth interview with Mariah Carey
19:58
Oh, yeah. Like, I want to dive a little bit deeper. To the deep cuts? Yeah, I want to get like, let's get deep
20:03
Like, I don't want it to just be surface level. Like, I really want to talk about it, you know
20:07
Yeah, yeah. Since you are the new Mariah of Christmas, it makes sense. Don't let her hear that
20:11
I know she'll see. I know she'll be dead. She's like, you're not coming for my Christmas throne
20:17
No, no, no, no, no, man. You're like, I can be the understudy. You're like, I can be the understudy. Well, you know, it's the crazy is that usually every year I go see Mariah
20:23
Oh, yeah. Since, like, 2015, I've always went to see Marais' Christmas show
20:28
and I think this is probably the first year I won't go because of the show. Because you're a little busy. Yeah, I'm a little busy
20:32
I'm a little, I'm a little, books. She'll forgive you. Yeah. She'll be back next year. Maybe
20:37
Maybe the tie. I can see her bringing them babies. They'll bring them babies. Yeah. She can bring them babies
20:41
Morocco and the other one? I forgot the other one. Me neither. No. Merlin
20:45
No. What's your kids' names? No. I have no idea. Oh, gosh
20:50
This should be the, this should be the game. I know. We're going to figure it. Celebrity kids
20:55
Anyway, thank you. I was still trying to figure it out. We'll figure it out there
20:59
Come to us like 3 o'clock in the morning. She doesn't want to always sing, so I don't know why I can't remember my name
21:03
That's crazy. Well, thank you. You know, this has been so fun chatting with you
21:06
Thank you. So, like we said, when we started, we're here at the freaky-tiki on 44th Street
21:11

23:36
No pineapple on this. Oh. Oh. Picoed jalapeno. Who knows what's in the tropical pico
