Hello, everyone. Welcome to Survival Jobs, a podcast in collaboration with Broadway World
0:10
My name is Samantha Dawn Tetzalo, and this is my amazing, beautiful, perfect co-host
0:17
Jason A. Coombs. Hey, Jason. Hey, Samantha Dawn Tetzalo. Thank you for the nice intro. Hey, Survivors. Thanks for
0:25
tuning in survivors happy millionth episode i feel like we have so i don't even know
0:34
i think it's 57 i'm so dead happy million episode can you imagine
0:41
no that's a lot that's a lot what's your temperature check like today thank you um
0:48
you know the change of the weather really was shocking because one day everybody was in shorts
0:53
and then the next day it was freezing i believe it snowed in some areas this week um so i was
0:58
feeling like my head congested a bunch of weird things so that was part of my temperature check
1:03
second part of my temperature check is i am so hyped for thanksgiving
1:08
i love thanksgiving food and that's it that's pretty much it i'm feeling good
1:16
how about you tell me your temperature yeah my temperature my temperature check is good i'm just
1:22
I was a little tired today, but really excited. We had the Bridgeport Art Trail this past weekend, which was a lot of fun
1:29
We had a screening for the Film Fest. And then my friend Sarah, who did her cabaret, the crappy cabaret
1:36
It was awesome. It was like a full house. Lisa Lampinelli was the guest star
1:44
And we had a good time. It was a lot of fun. So I'm feeling very rejuvenated, very happy
1:49
That's one less thing on my plate. Yeah. I'm dead that we're already talking about the Bridgeport Film Festival again
1:55
I know, right? We just did it. I'm confused. Well, you know, we just got to start planning like a year in advance and it's less than a year
2:06
Definitely is less than a year. Yeah, it's wild. But yeah, I was going to say that I saw Black Panther 2, Wakanda, forever
2:18
Yes. um and it was definitely uh uh an experience definitely experience i highly recommend it
2:29
and i think that uh they had a huge challenge ryan coogler director and writer
2:34
had a huge challenge to make a sequel to a movie after your lead you know actor dies unexpectedly
2:43
yeah so um it's a it's a very beautiful uh love letter to chavik boseman and
2:51
yeah yeah it's uh you know cried a couple times um and i think i was watching something where
3:01
angela bassett who plays uh black painter's mom ramonda she was saying how like before they
3:07
started shooting like the cast and i guess like the main crew all went to like
3:10
Tavik Boseman's place of burial and you know did like little tribute to him there and like
3:16
you know so intense right it's like wow to lose someone like that I know right that just gave me
3:23
body chills through my whole body yeah body chills through my whole body because that makes sense
3:29
I literally repetitive okay wow I'll definitely I need to go you you saw it in the theater
3:35
is that the only place yeah I saw it in IMAX yeah I think for now it's you know
3:38
I think you have to see it in IMAX yeah I mean because it's
3:43
it's epic it's epic and what I mean I'm not big into the superhero movies
3:48
just because there's so many and I can't I can't keep track of all of them and there's
3:52
too many and like you know I feel like sometimes they're kind of
3:56
they kind of write them kind of stock like by the stock kind of you know there's like
4:02
I feel like okay a lot of jokes and you know this epic thing and blah blah blah but I feel like
4:07
with Black Panther, you know, it's because it's so, soulful and thematic in ways that really resonate with the culture
4:14
And this film has a lot of like Mayan and, and, and, and kind of a native
4:21
like it's a native Mexican. I don't want to say the wrong thing, but you know
4:25
that kind of like those kinds of roots are buried in this and
4:28
and the actor who plays like the villain, I think his name is Tanakh
4:33
he's a Mexican actor and and you know to see that culture on the big screen in a movie like this is
4:40
also like really cool and really inspiring because I and then I don't want to make this too long but
4:44
he was basically saying like a lot of Mexican like media has a lot of like white Mexicans you
4:49
know so to see someone who is the lead of the superhero movie who's like a darker brown-skinned
4:54
Mexican more indigenous looking is breaking down barriers which is so important and we love that
5:00
we do we do yeah well great i'll definitely have to go see it sooner rather than later
5:06
yeah i mean it's gonna be in theaters for the next 28 months probably so
5:10
yeah i was just gonna say probably for a really long time i quickly wanted you to say one thing before we chat about our guest today
5:19
um i got to go to the opening night of kimberly akimbo which we know i love this show
5:25
and I just want to repeat myself to our faithful listeners this show is so amazing and beautiful
5:35
and touching and funny you laugh you cry I haven't seen musical theater like an original piece of
5:42
musical theater like this in a while I feel like I say that a lot I'm like theater hasn't done this
5:46
to me in a while like for everything that I love but I feel that happened last week Sam yeah no but
5:52
I feel that that feeling comes when things are so great. It got rave, rave, rave reviews, like no notes, like the reviews were flawless
6:04
So I'm telling you guys, run, get a ticket. Past guest Stephen Boyer is phenomenal
6:11
So amazing in it. I love Stephen Boyer. I just love this show. I love Stephen Boyer as well

6:28
phone just so i can give you correct information my good friend patrick is one of the producers on
6:34
mike birbiglia the old man in the pool playing at lincoln center um i have not seen it yet but
6:40
it got also great reviews it's on my list i hear it's like an amazing piece of theater
6:45

10:49
for joining us today from san diego california we are happy to have you like i said before i've been listening to the pod of the audio
11:01
comedy all morning to get ready for this so it's like kind of cool to actually meet you now
11:06
after listening. I'm sure you're not annoyed by my voice yet, hopefully
11:13
Never, never. Yeah, we're so happy to have you. Like Jason said, we're definitely going to talk
11:20
a lot about Rolling Calls, your new audio comedy on BPN as we get in the interview
11:26
But just to kick it off, we always love to start and jump right in and talk about survival jobs
11:31
So before we get into the nitty gritty of it all, what do you think defines a survival job
11:39
What more things defines a survival job? I think a survival job is something that I feel like is inherent to like the arts and artists or people who want to create in that general vibe that have to take on a job, a survival job to supplement their more important life, much to the chagrin of their hopes and dreams
12:06
So it's stuff that pays the bills, pays the rent, and can get you on that subway to and from your surviving job
12:14
On the subway. It's the ultimate goal of never stepping foot in that establishment or on that laptop again for that reason
12:22
Totally. Totally. I really love that question and the kind of answers we've been getting because I feel like ultimately they're all like the same idea, the answers, but everybody describes it a little bit differently
12:36
Yeah. So I really, it's my new favorite question in case anyone wanted to know that
12:41
It's a good question. It's a good question. Yeah. Well, Dan, you are a working actor, obviously, but did you have a favorite survival job while
12:52
you were on your journey trying to get to where you are now? Maybe impacted you positively
12:57
Yeah. So when I first moved to the city after graduating school, I got a job at this restaurant called
13:06
the Isabella's on the Upper West Side. Oh my god, I used to go
13:10
to Isabella's all of the time. Wait, were you on your server
13:14
I don't know. Well, so sorry to always interrupt everyone. My best friend
13:20
roommate is Ben Simpson, who also worked at Isabella's. Who I went to school with
13:25
Correct. So there we go. We always talk about Ben on this show. And he literally
13:29
never listens. So annoying. Okay. Okay, Isabella's. Yes. it was so good. Okay. Sorry. You may proceed. It was a good survival job. And thanks to Ben
13:46
and our mutual friend, Ariel, who I also went to school with, they worked there at the same time
13:51
And I had gotten a recommendation to the GM and I was like, look, I have no money. I'm so broke
13:56
I just graduated with so much student debt, but I need something that's going to pay my rent. It's
14:00
going to let me get a metro car to go to these auditions. And so I started working there and I
14:06
straight up, LOL, lied on my resume. I'd never worked in a restaurant before. Absolutely not
14:12
I put my friend Ashley down as a reference for another restaurant. I don't think they ever call
14:16
it, thank God. But I was like, look, I'm a good people person. I have great organizational skills
14:22
I'll be great at this job. And I got hired, I think on the spot, which was fun. And I worked
14:27
I was there for on and off for about a year. And it was an incredible learning experience
14:32
I saw a lot of celebs up by the Upper West Side by the Museum of Natural History
14:38
And it was super cute. They had a really great brunch. The brunch is where – didn't they have like a strawberry butter something delicious
14:46
Oh, my gosh. Strawberry butter with a biscuit? Yes. Of course I know. That strawberry butter, I like want to eat it with a spoon
14:53
Not actually, but kind of. It was a lit brunch You got one free coffee one free mimosa or cold drink one free hot cold drink and something else it was included in your brunch which was great
15:05
and a lot of strawberry butter did they close during the pandemic i think it closed right before the pandemic
15:16
oh gotcha but there's another cute restaurant there now so nice you know i love that that's
15:23
a sort of a common theme too on this show everybody has lied on their resume you have to
15:27
of course of course because how are you going to get like the head the one foot in front of the
15:32
other you can't really it's like the it's like the chicken and the egg thing right what came first
15:37
it's like they want you to have experience but like how do you get experience without the opportunity like hello hello the door like exactly yeah back in the day like those craigslist ads
15:50
for New York City restaurants were always like, must have New York City experience. And also you
15:55
must send your headshot, which is illegal, isn't it? It's kind of icky, I think. So icky. Not to
16:02
mention illegal, but yeah. Totally. Okay. So Isabella's was like a dreamy survival job. Do
16:10
you have one that maybe wasn't so dreamy, a shocking, funny, worst survival job story
16:17
It was also Isabella's, funnily enough. Yes. I love that. When it was great, it was great because it was all a bunch of actors and we all got the job
16:27
We all understood what our role there was, you know? So like we would help each other with auditions or taking shifts if one of them had to be covered
16:35
But it was also a nightmare to work there sometimes. Only because, you know, you're in an affluent neighborhood and there are certain personalities there that..
16:46
demand certain things instantaneously as if you are a wizard and that can't people suck
16:53
oh yeah so people people suck at restaurants and generally i think we've gotten better since then
17:00
i think since it closed in 2017 i would like to say now it's like twitter and social media and
17:06
everything blowing up with all these like horror stories and stuff like james corden huh yeah
17:12
Yeah. Yikes. Yikes. There were, there were some, I remember one day at Isabella's
17:21
I was like having a terrible brunch because it was so busy and we were in the weeds and I was carrying
17:26
I was carrying a tray of like nine mimosas to this table that was celebrating a
17:32
birthday or a graduation or something. I forget what it was. And I was like not focused at all
17:37
And I had an entire tray of these drinks and these obviously like champagne
17:41
flutes and I take one off and my life just goes in slow motion because as soon as I take one off
17:47
to set it down on the table every single one of those champagne flutes fell on the same guy
17:54
in his leather jacket and I was like having an astral experience because I was watching myself
18:02
like in my face as it was happening and that was a unique day at that restaurant I'll say that
18:10
was it james corden no kidding i mean it could have been so good it could have been yeah oh man
18:19
you know what i want to say is i'm feeling like this i'm having a lot of like pts not ptsd but
18:25
like flashbacks from other episodes julie banco has that same story about champagne flutes yes
18:31
she's like i walked and i spilled a whole thing of champagne flutes and this is why i love survival
18:36
job stories because we all are in it together you know together and we all can relate to those
18:43
freaking champagne flutes yeah every server i think every server has has dropped the
18:48
champagne flute or two or nine at some point oh my gosh
18:54
oh my gosh okay so let's get into rolling rolling calls um so it's a new com audio comedy on broadway podcast network and the opening line which which
19:08
i saw this i was like my mouth dropped open when i got the email i saw this it is when 23 year old
19:14
walt mendez played by you yeah gets a survival job at a struggling level nyc talent agency i was like
19:21
oh my god that's like perfect that aligns with our show so well um so yeah so tell us about tell
19:28
us about it and tell us what it's like portraying someone who's like a struggling actor knowing that
19:34
i don't want to say you were struggling i don't know you that well but you know the the the that's
19:39
kind of like what the stereotype of actors right is that we're always struggling to like yeah the comedy series is so witty and so uh smart it's written by gordon greenberg and steve rosen
19:51
directed by Gordon Greenberg. And it's really just this kid, Walt, who is an artist, who's a musician, a pianist
20:00
who was working at, I think it's Marie's Crisis is what it was
20:04
I don't know if we name it in the show. Yes! I think that's what it was
20:09
And who wouldn't, I mean, doesn't get paid well there. So he has to get a survival job
20:14
at this ultra, ultra low budget talent agency, the Dino Levine Agency
20:20
Yeah, it was famously played by Julie Halston. And it's just it's a blast through and through because you see Walt kind of navigating, trying to get these new skills and skill set of like dealing with high profile clients and dealing with people who need stuff all the time and also dealing with the huge personality that is Dinah Levine and not to give it
20:43
During the series, you see how maybe the business isn't being handled as well as it should be by her husband, who is played by Richard Kind, and all of the shinnigans that kind of ensue with Walt stepping into this world for the first time
21:02
Amazing. It sounds so great. I need to listen to it way more than I have
21:08
so you were just like listing some of the people that are um in the show with you i really want to
21:14
give a shout out to past survival job guest alum mary mcgowan who's also in it yes so this is like
21:22
an all-star cast and mary also worked a survival job with a starting show that's right no we're
21:28
just connecting everything today and i love it yeah i love it all of it um so i want to ask you
21:37
know what are how is the rehearsal process for this what are the differences between your process
21:43
with you know an audio show versus a live show can you talk a little bit about what that was all like
21:49
like and was everybody together you know it's it's it's tough when it's uh I can imagine it must be
21:56
tough it was a unique experience I mean it was so fun I have a really great um a relationship with
22:03
Gordon and Steve the writers of the show I'm actually here in San Diego at the Globe doing
22:07
their version of Christmas Carol, which is called Ebenezer Scrooge's Big San Diego Christmas Show. It's a local extravaganza
22:15
here at the Old Globe. But their type of humor is so fun
22:19
So I was really excited to do this podcast series because I do
22:23
some voiceover work for animation And so this just felt like a natural fit It so different because I never met anyone really I had two Zoom sessions with Richard and Julie and I think Brittany Mack
22:39
But for the most part, all of it was recorded independently with just kind of like this
22:44
Like it was me with my headset and my microphone and Gordon and Steve and Dory, our producer, and Mary, the line producer, just kind of figuring it out one line at a time
22:57
It was pretty funny. I had a session with Richard Kind and because of the audio delay, because it was being recorded, he didn't understand that I wasn't actually pausing between every line, that it was just the internet
23:10
And he's like, why are you pausing? Why are you pausing between every line
23:13
I'm like, he's not pausing Richard. It's just the delay. He's like, oh, okay, okay
23:19
He's like, that's a choice. Yeah, he's like, I don't know if that's the right choice
23:24
But you are making one, so I guess I respect it. But in general, I mean, it was a blast
23:31
We just got to record pretty much straight through over the course of a couple of days
23:35
and do some re-records. But it's so different from being a part of like a live show
23:42
because you have people around you and you're bouncing off of that energy
23:46
But this is a much more subdued style, like mockumentary, like All of the Office or Parks and Rec or something like that
23:53
where it's all just kind of realistic, even though it's theatrical, if that makes sense
23:59
No, it totally makes sense. Yeah, yeah. Can you let everybody know where they can listen to the show
24:05
Yes, you can listen to Rolling Calls on, I think, every single podcast streaming service
24:13
You can listen at bpn.fm slash Rolling Calls. You can listen on Spotify or Apple Podcasts
24:20
If I'm saying anything that's not right, please let me know. But I do think..
24:26
I went to your link tree. That sounds right. Yes, Jason. I think you can listen on any streaming service, pretty much
24:34
And I think new episodes drop every Thursday. So put that in your calendar, y'all
24:41
Listen right before us or right after us. There you go. We drop on Thursdays as well
24:47
It's all fate. It's all fate that we're all here together. How long is the season going to be
24:54
This season, I'm actually not entirely sure. I think it might be 10 episodes
24:59
10 episodes? I could be wrong, but there's definitely a lot more episodes that come out
25:06
And the arc is pretty fun to follow through. I mean, it's just an all-star cast
25:10
and just every episode kind of stands alone, but it has this big through line of Walt navigating this horrible, you know
25:17
situation of an agency and then coming out on the other side a little bit stronger
25:23
I love that. It's so cool. Like, I feel like with this new, like, you know
25:29
these audio stories, It's taken us back to days when, well, I mean, I wasn't alive, but like, you know, back where I imagined when radio plays were around, right
25:37
When like people would sit around the radio listening to these stories and before TV
25:43
And, you know, it just really reminds me of that. It's like so cool to be taken back to that
25:47
Yeah, it's fun because it's, I mean, it's just storytelling. There's nothing else visually there for you to like catch your eye on
25:56
But it's just our editors did an amazing job, like adding all the sound effects of what it's like to be in a local office or taking a phone call or like a chair squeak, you know, or opening a soda
26:07
But it's just like this audio experience. It's really fun. It's really fun
26:12
And I love that it's accessible to everyone, you know, like theater and live shows
26:17
It's not accessible to everyone. Either you're not in the right location or you can't afford a ticket price
26:22
So how wonderful to be able to access this on so many platforms
26:28
So great. Shout out. Shout out to BPN and shout out to Rolling Calls
26:32
Shout out. Shout out to Walt. I want to switch gears just a little bit because like most
26:39
like most theater fans, I feel 99% of us love Hamilton. And you were in the Hamilton parody, right
26:46
Yes. Where you played Lin-Manuel Miranda. I think it was Hamilton, right
26:51
Yes. yes so i have two questions two quick questions for you yeah i don't take too much of your time
26:56
but like what was that process like and and i saw like lynn actually came so what was it like to
27:02
be him and and being in this parody of like this iconic show that he created and performing in
27:07
front of him right um it was wild it was a wild experience when i first got the appointment for
27:15
my agents it was I think the name was untitled parody musical I don't know some like weird
27:22
secret name and I was like I don't know what the hell this is but sure okay I was working at
27:29
Isabella's being like I don't want to work here anymore let me get something else um so I went in
27:36
and then I was like oh this is Hamilton but just a parody and funny it's it was written by Gerard
27:42
allison dreamy famously from uh forbidden broadway and all those iterations yes um so i mean it was
27:49
really fun i got to play lynn um and funnily enough i had actually served lynn and his wife
27:57
while i was a waiter at isabella's before they had a child and i like vividly remember this
28:03
experience i was like meeting one of my heroes and i didn't want to geek out and be like i'm such a
28:08
huge fan of yours you're such an inspiration so i just like sent them a bunch of free stuff i was
28:13
like i'm trying not to be overbearing because i know you're out at dinner but like hey love you
28:17
love your work um you're like try the strawberry butter honestly i was like do you want like a
28:24
dark and stormy do you need it like anything you need please let me know but he was literally
28:30
crying like tears rolling down my eyes just like with the check like
28:38
they came to the show tommy kale alex lacamore and lynn and i told him this story and he vividly
28:48
remembers it because i think it was the day or two days before his wife gave birth or maybe the
28:53
week whatever it was and he's like yes we went out to isabella's and that was like one of our last
28:57
meals out when we had together. I was like, yeah, I was your service. Like what? No way. And he was like, yeah, do you remember this guy
29:05
He was our serve. It was just a weird, like full circle experience working at my survival job
29:11
having booked this amazing new parody job that really took off. And it was really affirming in that sense, which was really fun
29:21
The show was a hoot. It was 90 minutes, you know, a parody of every single thing about Broadway and Hamilton
29:27
Yeah. And I mean, everyone remembers how hot Hamilton was slash is is still, I guess
29:33
Is. Yeah. Totally is. And people like lost their minds. I was like, OK, cool. I'm all here for it. You know
29:43
Yes. I'm going to put you on the spot, Dan. Can you give us a little little impression
29:48
Oh, my gosh. Oh, my God. Oh, yeah. It is 930 in the morning over there
29:53
It is 930. You can decline if you want. I'll decline here, but if you go to Spotify
29:59
and you want to listen to our original cast album, it is out there for all its glory
30:05
And you can listen to my whiny nasal Lin-Manuel impression. My whiny nasal
30:12
That's so funny. So we're going to wrap this up shortly. We have a couple more questions
30:17
And then surprise, we play a quick fun game at the end
30:20
to just keep everything fun and happy. I love it. I love it
30:25
You know, you've had so many great experiences so far artistically. Do you have a dream role or a dream collaboration that would be like the end all be all for you
30:40
Do I have a dream role? I mean, I do think that I would love to, talking about full circles still, make the full circle connection back to Hamilton
30:52
And that's something that I've had the experience and luckily enough to make it through several rounds to the very end
30:58
and it just hasn't been the right time yet. But I would love to, you know
31:03
work with Lynn in any capacity and being in that show is definitely like
31:07
I mean, I wouldn't want to be in that show, right? It's a huge bucket list. So I think that's
31:12
or just working with him in general would be just a momentous occasion
31:16
Working with another huge Latin icon, being Latino myself, you know, I think that would be really, really special
31:24
I love that. Okay, one last question for the really fun game
31:28
Do you have just one piece of advice for any actors that are trying to you know just moving to New York City or moving to L or wherever they are who are trying to get to that next level in their careers Yeah I guess it I guess it would be twofold I mean the first of course is to never stop trying because everyone timeline is different And we all know this right It
31:53
such a cliche, but like, what happens to someone at 21 can also happen to someone at 51 or 61
31:59
You know, the success is not a straight line. It's, it's ups and downs and peaks and valleys
32:04
But the second part to that is also find stuff that you love that isn't necessarily involved in your dream or what you want your ultimate goal to be
32:13
Because it just makes you a more rounded person that you can bring to whatever else you want or desire, you know
32:22
I don't know. You preaching. You preaching, Mr. Dan. By the way, we heard from your first time survival jobs, Dan is going to be starring in Hamilton
32:32
And that's just it. You're here first. We manifest it all together
32:37
Hey, Lynn. Did you hear that? Hello, Lynn. If you're listening, definitely check out Rolling Calls
32:44
And then after, just cast Dan. No big deal. Wait. Also, I'm sorry to plug this in last minute
32:49
Lynn's dad, Luis Miranda, plays my dad in the podcast. Full circle again
32:56
Yes. Oh, my God. He plays your dad, and you played Lynn. It's funny
33:00
That's so good. That's so funny. It's meant to be. it is i saw that i saw the name in the cast list and i was like oh no it's probably just another
33:08
that's so crazy wow that's wow that gave me chills full circle okay we're we're manifesting this come on yes the three of us together
33:20
it was just 11 11 22 kind of we all here everything connecting and it all gonna work out I love it I love it wow dan thank you so much this was so fun you know what makes me laugh of jay said about us every time we like talk about
33:37
the game we're like we're gonna play a really fun game like we haven't found a new way to just but
33:43
it is it's fun okay so we're just gonna play a quick word association game we're gonna say
33:50
something and then the first thing that comes to your mind say as quick as possible whatever it is
33:57
oh my god you can swear on this show if that's the first thing that comes okay approved by broadway
34:02
worlds when when we have lisa lampanelli on and i was like hey um there's gonna be some explicit
34:10
