Tell me what it's been to you to work on Broadway
0:03
I mean, to become a part of the Broadway family and the theater family, what that's meant to you
0:06
It's so strange because I thought it was going to be this big barrier and these like gatekeeper-y folks
0:16
They don't nobody care. They're like, you did that too? Hey, come here. They're so like welcoming and sweet
0:21
Way more than I thought. Yeah. Yeah. Some Like It Hot will remain one of my favorite musicals
0:26
from now until eternity. What did you enjoy the most about working
0:30
with Matthew Lopez on that? Of course, with Scott and Mark. You know, I liked that we all kind of sat around
0:35
and we're like, what if it was this? Well, what if it was this? And it sort of felt like a TV writer's room in a way
0:42
And that I think is the way to do it. Yeah. Yeah. Meanwhile, I'm working by myself on The Wiz
0:47
so let me shut up. Let's talk about The Wiz. The Wiz, one of my all-time favorite shows of all time
0:52
Stored at the Majestic, stored at the Broadway many, many times. How much joy is that giving you
0:57
working on this new production of The Wiz that is coming to Broadway? It's, The Wiz is so outstanding
1:03
And you know, they're all like, when you do interviews under promise and over-deliver
1:09
no dice, it is the best. It's the friggin', it's fantastic. I cannot over, it's outstanding
1:16
It really is. Okay, you just opened in Baltimore, right? Yeah. Okay, what was it like adding the audience into that
1:22
of all the people who love The Wiz and discovering The Wiz for the very first time
1:26
I was so scared. Were you? Yes, because I thought that it would be
1:33
because when we are watching The Wiz, when we are watching our rehearsals, we're friggin' standing up and shouting
1:38
and these are our little friends, we know them. So then I thought, oh, the regular audience
1:43
is gonna be so quiet compared to us. No. No, they're not
1:47
No, they're not, they are just as rowdy as we are. It's very fun
1:51
It must be so great, because I fell in love with that as a kid, 1975. Bringing it to a new generation
1:56
and a new take on what that means to you with your spin on it
2:00
Yeah, what I like to think I've done, is I like to think that I made it a timeless version
2:08
The Wiz is extremely 70s, which is cool and fun and good
2:12
And then other iterations of it have been of its specific time
2:17
But I like to think we just washed away all of the 70s slang and all the iPads and stuff
2:26
and was just like, you can take this show, and you can do it 30 years from now
2:30
and you don't have to change a word. And now you've done that. Yeah, that's my hope
2:34
What's been the biggest pinch-me moment for you? You've worked with everybody in every genre
2:38
working on The Wiz. The biggest pinch-me moment for you was what so far
2:45
Just seeing the, I feel like my biggest pinch-me moment working on The Wiz was just seeing my goofy
2:54
goofy, goofy jokes lead into some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard
3:01
I just got goosebumps from the bottom of my feet to the top of my bald head. Oh, buddy, when you hear these songs
3:06
I mean, you're gonna lose it. It's the music. The music has always been the star of The Wiz
3:11
And this is no different. It's absolutely, it's untouchable, this music. I can't wait
3:17
Thank you as always. I'll be there way before them, I can't
