Hello, I'm Richard Ridge for Broadway World. We're here at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center for the
0:06
71st Annual Outer Critics Circle Awards which are given for excellence in the New York theater. What does this honor mean to you
0:13
You know, I was talking about this with friends of mine Just I love what the Outer Critics represent because they represent a freedom I think in our press right now
0:22
that's really really nice and to be honored by that opinion and
0:27
people that really do have the freedom to create their own space is really fantastic, and I'm just I'm bowled over to be here
0:34
This is incredible. It means a lot. It means that theater is changing. It's the change that I've wanted
0:39
to be a part of and I get to be a part of it with such amazing people and
0:44
I see the work being done slowly, but surely and we're getting there. It feels amazing
0:49
You know just a little over two years ago. I was at home not sure if there's gonna be civilization again
0:57
Trying to figure out how to sew masks for people who needed it I have you having no idea that was gonna be the subject of this show that would go off-broadway that would land me
1:06
here Outer Critics Circle Best Solo Show Award. So like that's yeah, it's it's it's been an amazing turn of events. Well, it's really lovely
1:15
It's great to be acknowledged and and especially because our show was a couple of months ago now
1:20
so it feels really nice to be acknowledged and it was such a joy to To cobble together so it really means a lot
1:27
Look, it's always nice to win It's especially nice being on the list of all of these other amazing people and be among those artists
1:34
That's what's most meaningful to me. It's terrifically exciting It leads a lot to the show
1:38
It means so much to all of us that we were able to capture the world of the show and the sound of the Show and put it all together and for me personally to be recognized this way by everybody feels really good
1:46
This is the first time my work in a play has been acknowledged with an award and I am
1:53
Beside myself it feels so I just feel honored to be having given the Outer Critics Circle
2:01
Award because these are the critics who come from all over and support and they see everything
2:07
So the fact that they're acknowledging my work is deeply important to me. It's a privilege
2:11
I honestly never thought we would be able to do this play. We waited for years and years so to have the reception be
2:18
so positive and Enthusiastic is amazing. I'm just kind of amazed that we put the play up in the first place. Yeah, the honor of being a presenter
2:28
Nearly equals the honor of having been an awardee of the Outer Critics Circle
2:35
I'm so excited just to be a part of this community I feel like every time I remember that I'm a part of it. I get re-excited
2:41
So being able to be a presenter and meet some of my heroes even today
2:47
So excited and just honored to be here and be a part of it the thing about six is that it's all about
2:54
adjusting each other's crowns and you know also to have the critics say
2:58
You know what? This show needs to be seen and I know it's tough to be a critic and that you know
3:02
You're having to quote-unquote judge and yet our show reminds you it's not about judging people. It's about
3:08
Encouraging their voice to see the lights back on and to see the audiences
3:14
Receiving art and story live in real time is Really? I just feel grateful to be able a witness
3:22
I feel grateful to be a witness and then to be recognized feels like an
3:27
Extraordinary piece of icing on an already sweet and delicious cake this whole thing was about love and hope and about my mother and the person that gave me the possibility of
3:38
Living and being something so for people to recognize and honor it means a lot to me
3:43
anything to do with this play just feels really emotional to me and it's it's the most important play of my life in the theater and
3:51
These two are you know? So dear to me and it's just it feels really emotional and I'm grateful
4:00
Feel what she said no, um, I I've never been more grateful in my life to be able to do a play. I did 25 years ago
4:10
I really didn't think it was gonna happen and it did and it is one of them
4:14
It is the most important play I've ever done Yeah, you know we've talked about before it really is one of the most amazing
4:22
Experiences of our lives and that the three of us get to be here together today, you know to sort of celebrate that
4:28
That's a really wonderful thing. You know, I mean, I know this comes from critics I'm one who tries not to read reviews, but
4:34
When not nice things are said about you They sort of seep out anyways, and I was just very moved by
4:41
people Responding so positively to not only my performance but our play so it means it means a lot, you know
4:50
Elaine stretch says people who say they don't read reviews are lying She's right
