Hi, I'm Carol Rothman. I'm nominated for Clyde's for Best Play and for Take Me Out for Best Revival
0:12
It is Tony Day and you are here for a double nomination. Yay! How exciting is this, Carol
0:17
Well, it's just thrilling because it's been such a hard time. It's been a time when we haven't
0:22
been able to do what we really love to do and I feel now part of the theater community. We're
0:27
all coming back and for me to have a for second stage to have a Best Play nomination and a Best
0:34
Revival nomination and hey we only did two shows this year on Broadway so I think we're batting
0:39
a thousand. Yeah. And it's very exciting. It's an incredible season you've had here. Clyde's
0:45
is such an incredible play and what Scott Ellis has done with Take Me Out. I was a huge fan of
0:51
the original but there's something about this production that it flies by even faster. I mean
0:57
just what's it been like having both of these shows in second stage this season? Well, you know
1:03
opening the show of Clyde's, which I really believed in as a new play, in the middle of a
1:08
pandemic was incredibly difficult just in terms of, you know, stressful. So I would get a call
1:16
saying so-and-so can't be there tonight or like okay the understudy's going on for this
1:21
and it was just a constant kind of battle. So I think that that was incredibly stressful and
1:28
you know I don't think that's totally gone away now but I think that, you know, Take Me Out is
1:33
here in the springtime. It's about baseball, you know, it's just wonderful and you know the
1:39
the actors are really wonderful and they're a team and so they were really interrupted
1:46
frankly, you know, two years ago and my feeling why I'm so emotional about it is because every
1:52
single one of them came back. The actors, the understudies, the director, obviously the writer
1:59
but you know the stage management, the designers, they all came back after two years because they
2:05
were committed to the play and because they were committed to each other. They're a great team
2:10
But they were also committed to second stage because no one does work like second stage does
2:14
How many years have second stage been around? 43. That's incredible. No seriously, I mean I just want to hear that. That's an incredible number
2:24
when you think of, you know, like Circle Rep was something I thought would live on forever
2:28
I did too. And now the garage down, you know, on 7th Avenue is a restaurant. I look at myself
2:33
you saw Lanford Wilson plays there. I saw Jeff Daniels. I saw all these incredible actors
2:37
just starting out. 43 years for second stage with all your different homes
2:42
and now you have a gorgeous Broadway home. I mean it must be so thrilling. It is thrilling. You know being on Broadway is a really special experience. I think it's because
2:50
it impacts the community in terms of economically and you know just it's a very strong community
2:59
and it's a great brand. I think Broadway is a great brand and I think people come to New York
3:03
to see Broadway and I hope they come to see Take Me Out but I think that they're really connected
3:10
to the experience of being in a Broadway theater. You know the other great thing about Take Me Out is I mean because of the notoriety of some of the
3:18
people that are in it, known from film and television, many people will be going to see
3:22
live theater for the first time because they idolize these people from another medium and
3:26
they're like oh my gosh this is what live theater is. That is so true because you know and I never really expected it but there you have you know
3:35
Jesse Tyler Ferguson who everybody's seen in Modern Family Forever and he's on stage and it's
3:41
like yeah or you know Jesse Williams from Grey's Anatomy you know he's not actually a doctor
3:50
He's actually an actor and he can be he's playing a baseball player totally different
3:57
So you know Patrick Adams same thing you know people know him from television but
4:02
he comes out on stage and he transforms and he speaks to the audience and the audience
4:07
sees him as the character and that's what theater's about right
