Hi, I'm Katie Lynch with Broadway World. We are here at Feinstein's 54 Below for a
0:05
sneak peek of their upcoming summer shows. Can't wait, let's get inside
0:30
The show is called Showstoppers, and that's because I wanted to explore the different facets and varieties of songs that stop the show
0:42
And there are the conventional showstoppers that we know, but there are also songs that are intimate ballads, quiet songs that go so deeply to the heart that they also create an experience where you have to have time to recover, and that is a showstopper
0:59
I will be doing traditional showstoppers, of course, and I have some comedic things that comment on the absurdity of performing
1:08
and of having to get out there and do these songs that are always like
1:12
you know, kind of like in your face kind of stuff, because there is a craziness about what we do
1:21
It's madness. and yet the bottom line is that people want and need this kind of connection
1:28
with this kind of music in their lives. I'm most excited about the guests with whom I'll be sharing the engagement
1:34
working with Betty Buckley again and John Lloyd Young, of course the Tony winner from Jersey Boys
1:40
and Eric Bergen who is now in Madam Secretary. If only somebody's planted really needed me
1:48
Someone affectionate and dear cares What the hell do you think if I know you're waiting
2:00
Oh, what can I do? It raining rain from the skies It raining tears fly for you rain in the rain
2:22
Well, the Broadhurst at 100. The Broadhurst Theatre is 100 years old and I have the pleasure
2:28
and the privilege of being part of this show because I created the role of Sandy in Grease
2:34
on Broadway in 1972 and we played at the Broadhurst Theatre. There was something warm about that
2:42
place, you could feel the history in it and when you think about it, that was 45 years
2:48
ago so it's kind of like almost halfway back into the Broadhurst's history. I will be with
2:56
Josh Franklin who was the last Danny in the last revival on Broadway so it will be the
3:03
Sandy and the last Danny and we're going to sing Summer Nights. I'm very glad to be a part of a little piece of history
3:12
Look at me, there has to be something more than what they see
3:25
All stupid and pure, all so scared and unsure of poor man's Sandra Dee
3:39
I got hooded someone since galore. You want to think of a boss? I got too much
3:47
But who cares? No big deal. I want more
3:57
The show is called Rule Your Kingdom. And it's some of my old famous stories that I tell that have kind of been like retooled
4:06
And then a bunch of brand new stuff. I chose songs that spoke to me
4:12
And I came from stories first about what I wanted to talk about
4:17
and then chose these pop songs And there some I mean I do tell some theater stories as well of course because it part of my life but I felt like it was really important to talk about ruling your kingdom
4:30
And especially now, it's so important to just own who you are and because who cares
4:38
It's like my journey to how I'm okay with myself and it's hopefully like inspiring and
4:44
empowering and through my like crazy funny failures and how you like rise up from all
4:53
of that. I'm looking forward to doing the old stuff with like a little twist but the new stuff
4:57
is amazing and I'm really really excited to do that. We use like multimedia and uh-huh
5:05
It's really fun. It's really fun. It's just fun. And then as I continue to sing, a group of drunk college boys joined in my song
5:15
I want to be where the people are. I want to see them dancing
5:23
Walking around on those... What's that word again? Dance! On my back, serpent, I'm ready to go
5:37
I'm standing here outside your door. I hate to wake you up to say goodbye
5:50
The name of my show is The Beat Goes On, and it's an evening of music from the 1960s
5:57
not just pop songs but also songs from Broadway shows and some really great movie songs too
6:03
I'm still looking forward to sharing it with the audience and I'm also doing some songs I've never done before that I've always wanted to do
6:10
This seems like the right time to take another look at these songs
6:14
My show is going to definitely be a combination of very fun and then bring me back to my childhood and personal stories
6:59
Oh, babe, I hate to go home. I was a kid that you wouldn't like
7:08
Just a small boy honored by riding topless. Yeah, I never cared who saw
7:14
My neighbor came outside to say, get your shirt. I said, no way
7:18
It's my last time. I'm not breaking any law. My show is called Aging is Optional because, God, I hope it is
7:26
And at this point in my life, God, do I hope it is. So I was looking for pathways to reclaim, maintain, and live inside my youth
7:37
Regalvanized to cellularly remember what it felt like to ride a bike
7:43
to hang upside down on Dr. Clark's apple trees, and to climb the rocks of Central Park
7:49
Aging is optional. It's my avenue in for young and old to maintain youth until we pop off, until we leave our body
7:57
And then who knows what happens? Well, they can expect Peter Pan
8:01
They can expect Lily, my mother, who lived to over 103 years old
8:06
She comes on and she sings. She loves to sing and she talks like this
8:10
The reason I'm so excited about coming back to Feinstein's 54 Below
8:14
Tuesday, August 1st, Thursday, August 3rd at 7 p.m. You're out at 8.30
8:20
It's because I want to be live again, leading with my heart and my smile with Aging is Optional
8:26
Because God, I hope it is. And I was just like you
