Hello, I'm Richard Ridge for Broadway World
0:02
One of the most beloved musicals of all time, Rodgers and Hammerstein's The Sound of Music
0:07
will be presented in a live three-hour broadcast on NBC on December 5th
0:12
It will star five-time Grammy Award winner Carrie Underwood as Maria and True Blood star Stephen Moyer as Captain Von Trapp
0:19
And I'm here at the Grace Church School, where NBC and casting director Bernie Telsey are looking to cast the Von Trapp children
0:25
And I caught up with many of the kids who are hoping to grab one of these coveted roles
0:30
So how did you find out about this audition? So it was about like a year ago, and I was like, Carrie Underwood, what
0:37
And then I was like, Sound Music, it's going to be a revival? And then I was like, I have to try out for this
0:42
So yeah, and here I am now trying out for it. I'm very excited
0:46
I got up very early in the morning, and some people wouldn't, they'd mind that a lot
0:50
but I didn't at all because I'm just so psyched for this. What time did you all get up today first
0:55
6.15. You were up at 6.15, so you got here at what time? 7-ish
1:01
What time did you get up? 6.15, like 6. I woke up at 7 o'clock and kind of left right afterward
1:10
What time did you get here today? I got here about like 6 o'clock in the morning
1:15
Did you sleep last night? Not really. So what was last night like for you
1:20
I was just practicing and practicing until it was perfect, until I felt confident
1:25
It's just a great experience to be with very professional people. and it would be a really good experience
1:33
It would be very fun, because I love performing. And I never really been in a real film only shows So it would be a great experience I was like oh I really want to be in it because I really like the movie a lot and I want to be a part of it
1:49
So how excited are you to be here today auditioning for The Sound of Music? Really excited
1:54
Do you know the movie? Do you know the show? Yeah. Do you know the musical? Do you know the movie
1:59
Yeah, I've been in the play once before and also my school's doing it this year. I love the movie, but I've never done the show, so I've tried out
2:06
How cool would this be if you were cast in this live three-hour broadcast of The Sound of Music on NBC
2:14
It would be like to die for. It's just a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and it's really exciting
2:21
How do you feel today? Very excited. I would be so ecstatic. I think I would die because it would be extraordinary if I got this
2:34
So how excited would you be if you were cast in this for NBC
2:38
That'd be so cool. I don't even know if I could put that into words
2:43
That'd be awesome. It would be a great honor to work with Carrie Underwood
2:47
but I might just drop dead, so I might not be able to do it. Is The Sound of Music a show you know or the movie
2:52
Yeah, I've done the show before. We've all done the show before together at a theater. At a theater
2:57
Yeah. We love to do open calls so we can find brand-new kids, you know, kids who aren't represented, don't have agents
3:03
don't have those sort of business connections, but yet have that incredible natural talent
3:08
And we're hoping to literally find our Von Trapp kids. And, you know, at least half of them from this kind of experience
3:15
This is really different because this is going to be a live broadcast. Talk about what's going to happen on NBC with this
3:20
Sure I mean this thing is going to rehearse like a normal Broadway musical It starts rehearsals in mid And then you know opening night is one night only You know December 5th NBC Live
3:30
There it is, the sound of music, you know, in a studio. You know, sort of, I always sort of connected a little bit to that
3:36
to that Cinderella that we all grew up with, Leslie Ann Warren. You know, where it was on the sound stage, but it was Cinderella
3:42
And this is going to be, you know, fully orchestrated, fully directed and choreographed by Rob Ashford and, you know, Carrie Underwood
3:49
I mean, it's such a great, you know, out-of-the-box idea, fresh idea
3:53
And she's so Maria-like, you know what I mean? Coming from a different world like Maria does and sort of making an impact on this family
4:01
And it's, I think, great. Because you wonder, like, why hasn't it been done
4:05
You know, it's such an iconic piece of material to have a sort of fresh take on it
4:11
And a, you know, 2012, 2013 take on it is great. How do you narrow it all down
4:17
You know, you do have your specifics in the script of, you know, one kid's got to be six and one kid's got to be ten
4:24
And you are looking for a family that will, you know, look Austrian
4:30
So there's some sort of that. But then again, it's the harmonizing
4:35
Nothing's going to harm you. No, sir. Not while I'm around. A finer night you know you'll never see
4:43
The world's going to wake up and see. me baltimore and me who will tie it up with a ribbon and put it in a box for me
4:56
is this home am i here for a day or forever let imagine we flying through the air i should have heeded her advice but he seemed so nice In passing where the weeping willows quiver
5:15
Whenever I feel afraid, I hold my head erect One small story puts the countryside in bloom
5:27
I found magic, but they won't see it Wouldn't you think I'm the girl, the girl who has everything
5:38
I'm leaning on a lamp. Maybe you think I look a tramp
5:45
I want to live at last. It's clear we're going to get along
5:54
You can bet that he's doing it for some doll. She says, Cosette, I love you very much
6:01
There is a life about to start when tomorrow comes. We'll look just like these pictures
6:09
And we'll live in our own way. And I'll see you every day
6:17
Edelweiss, Edelweiss. When the dog bites, when the bee stings, when I'm feeling sad
6:27
My heart will be blessed with the sound of music
6:39
And I'll sing once more
