It's All Puppy Love on the SYLVIA Red Carpet; Find Out Why Broadway's Best Loves Their Pooches!
Nov 7, 2022
It was 20 years ago when Sarah Jessica Parker starred Off-Broadway in A.R. Gurney's off-beat comedy about a man and his dog, SYLVIA. Just last night her hubby Matthew Broderick had the honor of opening in SYLVIA on Broadway, joined by Annaleigh Ashford as Sylvia, with Julie White and Robert Sella. BroadwayWorld was on the red carpet for the big night to chat with the celebrity guests about the show, and more importantly, whether they are dog-people or cat-people. Find out what Sarah Jessica Parker, Nathan Lane, Jerry Mitchell and more had to say below!

Hello, I'm Richard Ridge for Broadway World
0:02
A.R. Gurney's beloved comedy, Sylvia, has come to Broadway for the very first time
0:07
Under the direction of Daniel Sullivan, it stars Matthew Broderick, Julie White, Annalee Ashford, and Robert Stella
0:13
And we are here on the opening night red carpet where the stars came out to celebrate
0:17
How cool is it just to be here for a Broadway opening? You know what? I've rarely, I haven't done that many of these
0:24
I mean, I've always been in there just a wreck. So it's a thrill to be out here
0:29
And, you know, look, I love dogs. And so there's a very beautiful dog in this show
0:35
And I'm excited to see her and my dear friend Robby Sella. And I've heard amazing things about this show
0:41
And so I'm just thrilled and excited to be here. So were you a dog family growing up
0:47
I've always had dogs. I had dogs as a child. I feel it's life-affirming
0:52
Everyone must have a dog. I had 20 years of Springer Spaniels, which I love
0:57
I've just bought, I just now have an Australian Shepherd poodle mix called an Aussie Doodle
1:04
An Aussie Doodle? An Aussie Doodle. It is a seriously intense dog, and I find that I have to leave the apartment to concentrate
1:12
because he stares at me and expects me to work with him and do something
1:17
I guess he wants acting, I don't know what he wants, acting less, I don't know what he wants
1:21
But he's very intense, and I love this dog. I had it on my phone, but my phone's in my coat, and I was going to show everybody my dog tonight
1:29
Tell me what's brought you here tonight. Annalee Ashford, number one. Actually, she's coming to On Your Feet tomorrow night, so I'm going to see her tonight
1:37
David Rockwell, who designed On Your Feet, and Kinky Boots, and Matthew Broderick, of course, and everybody
1:44
I'm just excited to see it. Daryl, you know, yeah. Isn't it great when you work in this business, it all comes full circle
1:50
Like, oh, my God, all these people in the show I have worked with or know. We're in a really tight community, and, you know, there's nothing I like more than seeing my friends succeed
2:01
Do you believe the adage that a dog is a man's best friend? I do, actually. I've had dogs and cats, and I love them both
2:09
But the relationship with a dog is different. Dogs teach us about unconditional love
2:14
They really do. What sport did you hear tonight Miss Julie White and Miss Annelie Ashford I worked with them them both All right Julie you just worked on Airline Highway Airline Highway and Anna Lee and I
2:26
were in Wicked on the Road, back when she was a chorus girl, begging to be a Glinda understudy
2:31
So I knew her when. Clawing her way up to Glinda understudy
2:36
And look what she did. Did you a dog lover growing up? I was. We had four dogs since I was during my childhood
2:43
German Shepherds, usually. We love shepherds and collies, yeah. Not really a small dog, personally
2:48
Big ones. Yeah. How did you get them? Did you find them? Were they stray dogs
2:52
Did they come from a breeder? We usually got them from breeders back then
2:56
And one just appeared on our porch one day and wouldn't leave. So four shepherds
3:01
Well, no. The one that appeared on our porch was like a little terrier mix of something
3:06
But the rest were shepherds, yeah. Have you been back a lot during the preview period
3:10
Tell me. Yeah, no, I have. It's hard to stay away, but I don't want to breathe down Dan Sullivan's neck or the actor's neck
3:20
I don't want to say, well, we did it this way in California. But they've done it their own way, and they've done it beautifully
3:27
I'm very proud of it. And just this new production, what it means to you
3:32
Well, it's exciting, exciting. This has never happened to me this way before
3:38
And the cast? Yeah, perfect. Just perfect. Do you know the play
3:43
We know of the play, but no, I don't know all the twists and turns of the play
3:49
Never seen it. Never seen it. But we love that. I love when people come to a theater like, you think everybody knows these things
3:55
You're like, no, I've never seen it. I've never read it. We just know Anna Lee Ashford cast as a dog
4:00
Done. I mean, done. We both did Wicked with her many years ago and almost 10 years ago now
4:06
And we knew then that she was a singular talent. So we're thrilled to get to see her do this
4:11
Dog people? Oh, yeah. Dog person. Makako. Makako. You know Makako? So he kind of ruled our lives before the baby was born, and now he rules all of our lives
4:23
I've never seen the play, which is a real... I know Pete Gurney very well, but for some reason, I never saw it
4:31
And so I'm really looking forward to it. Also, my family is a dog family
4:35
So I mean we always had crazy dogs Insane dogs No because I was going to ask you You know what the story about So I mean it the love of a dog and everything else I sure Annalie Ashford will remind me of every dog my mother ever brought home
4:49
She brought strays home. I was going to ask you, growing up, it started with your mom bringing dogs home
4:54
Oh, yes. Oh, yeah, totally. Well, when I was brought home from the hospital, I am told
4:59
we had a Doberman Pinscher, and everybody was scared that the Doberman wouldn't like the baby
5:04
so my mother put the baby on a blanket and let the dog come over and sniff me or eat me i guess
5:12
i don't know and uh the dog then liked me and adopted me and then i was his forever what's
5:18
you out here tonight matthew broderick you know and sylvia i saw you know years ago and so i'm
5:24
anxious to see it again i loved it then you know it's come full circle because of course his wife
5:28
sarah was sylvia the first time at mtc the original doggie yeah matthew's so wonderful
5:33
They all are in this show. It's such a great show. Yeah, yeah. I'm glad they brought it back
5:38
Growing up, were you a dog person, a cat person? I was a both person. We had from Great Danes to Australian Silkies to Burmese cats
5:48
So we've had everything. And I don't have an animal now, and I really miss it
5:53
It's going to be fun to see how it unfolds, because I've already got ideas in my mind of what's going to happen
5:57
but I don't really know what's going to happen. Growing up, were you a dog lover, a cat lover
6:02
I loved all animals, and our parents would not allow us to have pets. And my sister's friend gave her a dog for her birthday
6:08
and I was so excited that my mom made her give it back immediately. So we eventually were allowed to have parakeets
6:14
So the first thing I did when I moved out on my own was get two cats
6:20
Richard Chamberlain had a cat that got knocked up, and he gave me two of the kittens, and those were my beloved creatures for years
6:27
Then I went on from there with dogs and more animals and still have them in my life
6:32
I'm so excited because I never saw it when Sarah was in it. I was, I don't know where I was, but I never saw it
6:37
So I'm finally getting to see it with at least one member of that marriage
6:41
Totally. And I've seen it, and Matthew is fantastic. I never knew he was a true AR gurney
6:48
He really is. That's a great match in heaven. Are you guys dog lovers
6:54
Yeah. We had a dog for 15 years. She went to every rehearsal She went to out of town and she flew back and forth on private planes So yeah we dog people What a life she had right Yeah she dead now Thank you for bringing it up though
7:09
Had you been here to see it before? Yeah, I just saw it and it's lovely. It's wonderful
7:13
Yeah, I'm really, I think it's a delightful, lovely play. Lovely. How proud you are to see Matthew up there with this new cast
7:19
I'm always proud to see Matthew. Yeah, and everybody's so wonderful and I'm a big fan of Julie's, long time fan and to
7:26
see somebody else have the same experience and enjoy it clearly loves playing the part of Sylvia
7:31
so much. It's wonderful. And I thought I would be far more proprietary about it, but I've not been
7:36
at all. I've been very proud of myself. Yeah. It was such a career changer for you. This show
7:40
when you did MTC, what was it like taking on this role and working, you know, for Pete Gurney and the
7:45
whole production? It was a thrill. It was fun. I never panicked for some reason. It was one of
7:49
those experiences that was without, it wasn't wrought with a lot of like Cirrus. It was a very
7:55
wonderful, vivid in my memory experience. It was a very joyous time
8:01
I'm very excited to see my friend and do this. It's a charming play, and I hear it's a terrific production
8:09
I was here three days ago. They're all terrific. Matthew is off the map. They all are
8:13
Beautifully designed. Did you see it originally with Sarah? Yeah, oh, sure. Yeah, it's a charming play
8:18
And, you know, it was a real breakthrough for Sarah. Sarah, she was just great in it and adorable and funny and touching
8:26
And so, yeah, and Annalie Ashford is fantastic. So I can only imagine how great she is
8:32
Model after in this show too. Oh, yeah, absolutely. Now, Nathan, growing up, dog or cat person
8:38
I'm a dog person, very much a dog person. But you've had for a long time, same dog
8:44
Nine years, Mabel, my dog Mabel, yeah, French Bulldog. How did you get here
8:49
I've been talking to people along the line. Many people traveled across the country. Like, you know, people have done less to get a child
8:54
So what did you do to get Mabel? This was a present from Terrence McNally
9:00
He brought her home, and she was this little tiny black and white ball of fur
9:04
And we put her down, and she immediately crawled into a corner and just sat there staring at us
9:10
And I said to Devlin, I think you picked a lemon. But she's been, she changed our lives
9:20
It's been a great, great thing. I highly recommend getting a dog
