September 1st, 1989, Dear Diary

I look around at these kids I've known all my life and wonder what happened
0:11
What you waiting for? Welcome to my candy store! From day one I knew it would have a live all its own
0:21
So she is set in high school, back in high school were either of you two in a particular clique
0:26
Were you heathers yourself at all? I was a stoner. I wasn't a heather
0:32
I was sadly kind of the nerdy outsider. I know that it's sad. I wish that I were cool and hip and mean
0:38
But I was a bit of a nerdy outsider. I just think Sophia does an amazing job
0:44
And when she sings that song, which obviously I didn't sing. Because nobody would want me to sing
0:49
It makes me cry every time. So I think they've done an honor to Heather McNamara's legacy
0:58
I would come with all the family. I'd rather take them to the theatre than get them to come and see me
1:03
Did you ever watch Heathers before the movie? I haven't actually. My boys have
1:08
So it was their idea that we came. I got the invitation. I thought, why not
1:12
I've only heard good things about it. He's set in a high school. Were you in a particular group of cliques when you were in secondary school
1:19
Yeah, I was with all the big girls. These kids I've known all my life and wonder what happened
1:27
I'm rather excited. I love the film. And it was sort of a film that my oldest daughter dragged me to see
1:36
Because she's of the age when Heathers was the thing. So yeah, I'm very excited
1:43
I love a musical. I love a good story. I love a story that's difficult
1:49
Someone's turning to a musical. Couldn't be happier. When I was at school, let me tell you
1:55
My clique was me. Because I was the only girl in my grammar school that danced
2:02
There were a thousand students. And I was going to ballet classes
2:09
And what was the odd one out? It's absolutely amazing. This is a dream come true for me
2:16
As you know, we did a workshop at the other palace. We then played the main house at the other palace
2:21
And halfway through, I had a run at the other palace. To know that we were going to end up in the beautiful Theatre Royal Haymarket
2:26
It's an honour. I'm co-producing with Bill Kenwright. Who, as far as I'm concerned, is like a father figure to me
2:33
The most brilliant class we could have hoped for. And on paper, Heathers shouldn't have worked
2:38
I've got a great team who are all on different corners of the globe. And for some reason, someone was looking down on me
2:45
And it's worked. So I'm so happy. At school, I'm actually doing this show
2:51
I've started to think more about school. I used to be the nerd
2:55
And then I turned into the bully. And then I went back to the nerd. But I think if I had to associate myself with a character
3:01
I think I'd be a Martha. That's a strange one, isn't it
3:06
A Martha with a tiny bit of Chandler. I'd like to see that person
3:16
It feels amazing. This is like the best night ever. We didn't know that we were going to get here
3:21
When we closed the show off Broadway, we thought, Okay, this is it for Heathers
3:26
Now it's going to belong to colleges and small professional theaters and amateur
3:31
And it was just such an incredible blessing that Paul Taylor Mills brought us to the other palace
3:38
And let us not only come ourselves, but he let us bring Andy Fickman, who nobody knew
3:43
And we didn't want to do this without Andy. Now we're on the West End, which is crazy
3:50
When we were off Broadway, people started dressing up. But it wasn't a thing yet
3:55
It was only after we closed in 2014. People started getting really into it through our social media
4:02
through our Instagram and our Facebook and our Twitter and all that other stuff
4:06
But we had no idea whether that was going to extend to the UK or not
4:11
And it was a wonderful surprise when we got to our first workshop at the other palace last year
4:18
and people were in costume already. And now it's just getting bigger and bigger
4:22
So I'm really just blessed and grateful. The reason to come see Heathers is because you will have bragging rights in a couple of years
4:34
just like the people who saw the original cast of Rent, the original cast of Wicked
4:39
the original cast of Hamilton, because all of these guys are stars
4:44
And we were really, really lucky that we got them just out of school
4:48
And you're never going to get these people on the same stage again
4:53
See them while you can
