Hi Eddie Varley of Broadway World
0:32
You're here in the middle of Les Miserables rehearsal in sunny Los Angeles where the weather is the same every day
0:40
But we're very excited and we're going to put fingers crossed for a great show this weekend
0:45
I can't believe what we've pulled off, you know, with myself and Mary Beth Abel and Kevin Stites and all the people working on the show
0:52
But last November when Cameron Mackintosh called me and Richard Selfis from MTI along with the Bole people to say
0:59
we're going to do the Miss Robin concert, would you be interested
1:03
Well you know that took me about two seconds to figure out What I didn understand because I had done an in before in Toronto at the Sky Dome with Keith Batten and what I didn quite understand is that they actually don
1:17
do concerts here. And of course, they do many concerts at Hollywood Bowl, but when they do their musical every
1:22
summer, it's staged. Like last summer when they did South Pacific with Brian Stokes, Mitchell, and Reba McIntyre
1:27
or when they did Sound of Music with Melissa Errico, they're staged, you know
1:32
And so when I talked to everybody, I said, boy, you know, the concert version won't exactly translate to physical staging, you know, per se
1:44
And so can we get a modified text and script and libretto? And Cameron and the folks in London, Claude Michel, Schoenberg and Alain Boubile went through the stuff
1:52
And we have a very sort of unique version that's being performed here. And I'm very excited about it
1:57
And we're pulling it off, I hope. Fingers crossed. We promote St John prietal Who loves to talk I love to talk to you
2:23
I love to talk to you. To do this re-invented staging with no turntable and all that was wonderful and illuminating and scary
2:32
It was as scary as hell. And I have to say that every actor in this show, even the high school kids who just graduated from Oak School
2:40
and from Hamilton High where I saw a high school production and cried from top of my head
2:44
I said, I want those kids in the show. They all contributed and they all understood
2:49
how the show's put together. Here's the room, now go. It's sort of like Morales talking about her acting teacher
2:55
You're on a bobsled, it's snowing, go. And you just let the people loose
2:59
and you took what worked and you got rid of what didn't and you told story. We did theater games and I hate that term
3:05
but we did things that were applicable about communication and hearing and listening and physicality and the whole thing's just been mind-boggling
3:13
If I think about it, I'll start crying, and I have done a lot of crying. To the future, the people sing, sing the song of every hand
3:22
This is the music of a people who would not be slaves again When When the music of our hearts and the music of their hearts there is a
3:34
book about to start a tomorrow part. I'm thrilled
3:44
at the opportunity to revisit the show 12 years later. And it's just thrilling
3:50
And the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, the Hollywood Bowl structure. I just can't even say enough about it
3:54
Everybody here, every designer, every operator, I just can't believe they put on a show here
3:59
every single night. There's something here. And I just think they're the nicest people I've ever met
4:04
And I'm not just saying that because I certainly want to come back for a show that I'm not known for
4:09
But for right now, I'll take a little bit of a job. And it's just been a blessing all the way around
4:15
I know people say that a lot. I'm not going to tell you about the journey and this and that and all those boring things
4:20
but it's rock solid. We are rock solid and hopefully people will get it
4:25
and I'm very excited and thanks for listening and thanks for watching Broadway World
