EMPTY SPACE Bonus Featurette: Funny Stories from the Set
Nov 7, 2022
BroadwayWorld is excited to exclusively bring you our newest, and first webseries that takes place in an actual theatre- Empty Space. Empty Space is a love-letter to live theater, a nine-episode comedy that explores and glorifies the world of diehard thespians, those hardcore beasts of the theater who soldier on against the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune because, after all, the show must go on.

I have a noose hanging in my living room that Joey gave me, I think, the last day of shooting
0:42
because he felt like a noose was an appropriate gift. Who's Joey
0:48
Joey was... Joey did everything. Joey was just... Joey ran around and made everything work
1:00
He also hosted our cast party. One of the big challenges for me in addition to getting to the facility was being hired to do one part and getting on set and being told that oh no you going to be doing a different character a totally different character Once you on the set and the cameras are rolling I mean things can go wrong
1:25
but, you know, the show must go on. So once you're on set, if an actor is like, I can't play this part anymore
1:32
then you turn to one of the extras and you say, guess what? You're pretty talented
1:36
I've known you for a long time. Had you liked to step in. And that did happen on set, you know
1:40
and in Paul Eiding's case, and Sarah Peck, Sarah was an actor in I Stanced Andy Warhol, my first movie
1:48
and she just showed up to support to be an extra, and Paul was supposed to play the reporter in episode one
1:54
who's interviewing Ian, and then the actor who was going to play Carlyle couldn't make it
2:00
And it was his first day of shooting, and I just had to make a decision
2:04
And I said, well, Paul is one of the most talented, extraordinary actors I know
2:08
what am I thinking, casting him in a smaller role anyway. I shifted him over to Carlisle, and I turned to Sarah, and I said, hey, how'd you like to play
2:16
the reporter? You're funny. I know you can do it. And she said, yeah. So they were in the lines
2:19
that day, and they stepped into the parts, and it's terrific that it worked out the way it did
2:25
Yeah so you know the changing characters that why I get the medium bucks You know it funny because on my first movie I snatched Andy Warhol I was actually able to cut together several blooper reels from all these different takes we messed up and everything like this
2:45
And if you feel like I feel, baby. And on empty space, I tried to do that, but we don't have anything
2:54
All the actors were really on point, and so is the crew. I couldn't cut together a blooper reel if I tried
3:01
So, fun stories from set, certainly. A lot of fun things happening, just that the crew was so fun
3:06
and the cast was so fun, and everybody got along so well, and had a great time
3:11
But most funny stories for me come from things that were disastrously wrong
3:15
and we didn't have, honestly, too much of that. The thing that got me was that everybody was really cool about everything
3:23
If something took a little longer, cool. if people change parts we had to wait for lighting
3:31
all those things that happened on the set no one while I was there
3:37
was perturbed by anything everyone had a common purpose and that was to make it as good as it could be
3:43
the one funny thing that can happen with all of that is just sheer delirium after you you know you do a 12 shoot day and then uh uh you you had to drive there in the morning The Warner Grand is in San Pedro
3:54
and if you're familiar with Los Angeles, that's a long way from home. Uh, so we, we drive out there
4:00
and rush hour traffic, you'd get back and you'd be exhausted, but you have to offload the footage
4:05
and do all that stuff. And so you end up getting almost no sleep and you get that burnout energy
4:09
going, um, which is great and awesome to have on set, but sometimes you get a little, you get a little
4:14
a little crazy. And then you see crew members and cast members respond accordingly
4:19
I remember Karina one day forgot to bring her makeup bag and had to, she was about to get
4:25
ready for a scene and she had a stray, I can't remember if it was an eyebrow or an eyelash
4:29
but she just grabbed leatherman pliers and she just pulled out her eyebrow with these
4:33
leatherman pliers instead because she couldn't find anything. Stuff like that. People just trying desperately to keep their sanity together as they plow through this stuff is
4:43
pretty extraordinary. Because everyone was invested in the project, in the writing
4:51
And it was just a gas to do. Watch empty space. Watch empty space
4:58
Watch empty space. Watch empty space. Watch empty space
