COME FROM AWAY Gets Ready to Spread the Love on Broadway!
Nov 5, 2022
In a heartbeat, 38 planes and 6,579 passengers were forced to land in Gander, Newfoundland, doubling the population of one small town on The Edge of the world. On September 11, 2001 the world stopped. On September 12, their stories moved us all.

Hi Broadway world buddies, it's your Broadway buddy Ben Cameron here at the meet and greet for the new musical Come From Away
0:07
We had a moment to talk to some of the cast and creative team and we found out that it's all about the love
0:26
Happy first day of school. Wow, I brought my trapper keeper, I got my pencil case, I got my Spider-Man lunchbox, I'm ready
0:33
It is all happening. What started out as a blink in your eye two and a half years ago is coming to fruition
0:41
Broadway is happening. How does it make you feel to see this through through so many stages and make the transition to Broadway
0:47
I mean, I couldn't sleep last night. It was like the first day of school. You know, we're like, we're finally here
0:52
And you're like, wait, I can't believe it. It seems like the longest, shortest time to get here, if that makes any sense, you know
1:00
But once again, it's a big love fest, and we're all thrilled
1:04
That's what everyone has said kind of throughout, that there's a genuine love between this cast and creative team
1:08
What do you attribute that to? It's a lie. It's a lie
1:12
I'm here with Chad and Caesar from Stars Have Come From Away
1:16
Chad's enjoying a delicious prop meal. What's in your bowl, Chad? Fish and cheese
1:21
Is fish and cheese a thing? In this show, it is. What are you looking forward to sending people away with after they see Come From Away
1:28
What are the main messages you're hoping that they walk in? Besides tapping their toes the score is incredible but what greater mission do you have in this I think it just feeds kindness And it so simple
1:42
Also that we are good, that people are good, and they just want to help each other out
1:48
And when it really comes down to it, we want to help each other out. And I think we need that message now more than ever
1:54
Kindness has come up a lot. Inclusion and kindness and friendship and the power of that
1:58
how do you think that the messages didn't come from a way applied to today's world
2:01
where there's a lot of disconnect, maybe? You know, I think kindness is a message anybody can hear at any time
2:07
There's never a time when it's not appropriate. I think certainly in some places in the world right now
2:15
it might be a more needed message. But I think it's something that is never out of fashion
2:21
And have you guys thought about opening night yet? What are we wearing? Or is that so far away
2:25
You know what? I'm hoping they get us into some kind of showroom, if I'm being honest
2:31
Okay, Donna, Karen, where you at? We were in Vanity Fair, so let's have this happen
2:36
We were in Vanity Fair. No, no, no. That's what we got to do. Okay. You know, we want to look good
2:41
We want to look good. We want to look good. You're both very attractive. I'm sure you'll look great
2:45
Thank you. Thank you so much. Thank you. But also individual. You know, we're all so individual, this whole company
2:52
And that's what I think has made us so complete as a family
2:58
You know, theater, we always talk about family. But we've been together for two years, strong
3:04
And we seen each other at our highest at our lowest in between And we have just I love you You know and that really resonates on stage
3:17
And what do you hope that people walk away from after seeing Come From Away? I hope that they take that sense of community that we create on stage about these people
3:26
and how they took care of one another. And that they want to be part of the community, be good citizens in the sense of
3:32
you know, not good citizens, but just kind people. to bring that out of themselves and to have a good laugh
3:38
and to have fun and to celebrate people being kind. The people that had the experience of being again
3:47
or that come from a ways, from off the plains, they came back and they have revisited those people many times over
3:55
because they want to reconnect over and over and over again with that sense of goodness and openness and kindness
4:03
I met a couple in Gander who said they don't feel comfortable if their house doesn't have extra toothbrushes, extra soap bars, extra deodorant, everything set up for somebody just stopping in and staying
4:16
How have you navigated all of those to make the most of this incredible music? Yeah, we were so inspired and blown away with the music making that is happening in Newfoundland today, which is really unlike any other sound I've experienced
4:29
And I would describe it as like a traditional Celtic band gets jammed together with a contemporary rock band
4:36
So we have whistles We have one guy playing 25 different whistles and flutes which are all portable instruments that was a big thing in Newfoundland is a big thing that so much of the music making happens socially and in people kitchens and people living rooms so you see these instruments like the flutes and whistles the fiddle the button accordion which is different than the
4:55
keyboard accordion I had to learn a button accordion for this show and what kind of research
4:58
did you do I saw there was some step dancing going on I did see there was a little very little
5:03
yeah sort of took my own little spin on it and I don't it's it's because we're representing real
5:10
people and I've met a lot of them. They're not professional dancers
5:15
Sure, it would be silly if they were doing 20 turns. It's about finding the right tone and
5:20
making sure that they're not too good at anything but it just feels real
5:24
in the moment and situational. That's been interesting. There's a lot of trial and error in that too
5:30
Now compare this experience to Rock of Ages where you have dancing sluts
5:34
everywhere. How does this vary and what are the perks to either
5:38
or both? I miss those dancing sluts all the time. No, come on
5:45
I mean, who gets to pole dance anymore? What do you hope that people take away after seeing Come From Away? I know
5:50
there's a lot of really important themes of friendship and kindness, and you all seem
5:54
everybody I've talked to just says how much, how madly in love with each other you all are
5:58
Which is such a beautiful thing, it doesn't always happen. What do you hope that, how do you think that
6:02
translates to the audience, and what do you hope they get out of this show? I hope they feel the same way
6:06
that we do, that we love each other and we're in this together
6:10
And I hope they leave even more so feeling that ripple effect of love
6:14
and maybe they can spread that love out like the people of Gander did. It's a world we live in right now
6:19
and always a good time to love somebody else but even more so now than ever
