I think people will be really blown away when they see it using all of this space
0:04
It's kind of a weird hybrid between film and theatre. I also think it's going to be very historical
0:18
We were so, so, so determined that we did something at Christmas. It's such an important landmark, you know, families going to their local theatre
0:26
to see a show, whether it's a pantomime or a musical, like we do here at Curve, and the fact we can do this and film it is just incredible
0:34
So it's really, it's a special, special time. This has been made for the camera
0:38
It's a seven-camera shoot and most of them are moving, they're fluid
0:42
they change position, they have cues. You know, it's not like you're just archiving a performance
0:47
where it's just standard coverage. You know, we're actually doing it in a 360 space
0:51
so there's audience spaces that are all around us. So it's kind of, as an actor, like, oh, this is like something in the round
0:58
but then, actually, you're having to make sure the camera's there for this, so this is played this way
1:03
So as a director, you can see the nuance and the thought process and the detail
1:09
And then, of course, when we get in a big space like this, or, you know, we're on tour
1:13
Ria and Danny are really having to project that performance to 1,200 people
1:19
And it's a very different sort of experience. The camera sees so much, you know, it can really see the twinkle in your eye and the detail
1:28
And it's amazing seeing those performances again with that nuance, that detail
1:33
It's, I suppose, sometimes you have to think more stillness when a camera's so closer to you
1:39
as opposed to in the theatre, when you have to project up to the back row of the upper circle
1:44
Very hard sometimes trying to keep focused in character when you have a camera there
1:48
And you're trying to look past that and continue with your internal thoughts of the role
1:54
and where you are in the piece. That's tricky. It's managed to bring a whole new dimension to the piece
1:59
I mean, we obviously created this show as a stage show with full sets, lights, costumes, everything
2:04
To now have to film it because of the circumstances has unleashed a whole new aspect
2:10
Got a 16-piece orchestra live in the room. The lighting rig is massive. Not only the main stage we played on before is here
2:17
we've lifted the wall and we've opened up the other stage. So we've got the whole 360 auditorium
2:22
But now we've got an audience who we can't see, who we're not aware of
2:27
and they're only going to now see what they're shown through the camera. It's a crazy hybrid, modern, exciting, vibrant mesh of theatre and film coming together
2:39
What Nikolaj and Crosscut are doing is, I've never seen it done before
2:43
And it just seems so poetic to be filming a story that was initially about being behind the camera
2:54
and now we're showing them behind the curtain
