Could this be the best MGP release yet? Stay tuned to find out
0:06
Hey everyone, welcome to Bourbon Bites. I'm Clifton, and today we're reviewing Remus Repeal
0:11
Reserve Series 5. This is the 2021 release of the George Remus Limited Edition. They release it
0:17
every single year. Of course, George Remus is the house brand of MGP out of Indiana. They make a lot
0:23
of whiskey that's sourced by a lot of different brands, but this is their own stuff, and they put
0:27
this out once a year. MSRP on this is $90, but it's actually their oldest release yet
0:32
So it's made up of a blend of five different bourbons, which I'll put a chart up here telling
0:36
you, but the youngest one in this is 13 years old. In fact, it's almost 70% 13-year-old
0:42
and it only gets older from there. 24% of this is a 15-year-old bourbon, and 9% is 16 years old
0:49
So when you look at the scheme of age and pricing in bourbon, $90 seems like a pretty good deal
0:54
especially for MGP. Some older single barrels for the brand go for crazy prices. There's even like a
0:59
secondary market for it Um but for them to release their own stuff yes it is a blend and yes it proof down to 100 proof but for 90 bucks I think you know hopefully it a winner already Now I also tried Series 4 which came out last year and
1:12
I remember really loving that one, but this one's even older than that, so my expectations are really
1:17
high for this one, so I hope it lives up to it. So let's go ahead and get into it. Huh, that's
1:21
surprisingly light on the nose. It's more in like the nutty, like the fruit, like trail mix kind of
1:27
note compared to what I expected. It was, I expected an oak bomb with this, but on the nose
1:31
it's not really giving me too strong of an oak flavor. It does remind me of like, you know
1:35
the trail mix that has like the chocolate in it, the nuts, the raisins and things like that
1:40
It has a little bit of like a cherry note as well. Definitely not as oak forward as I thought
1:45
but it's still a really lovely nose. So let's go ahead and give it a try. Cheers guys. Wow. The first thing that hits me isn't necessarily a flavor. It's more of the mouthfeel
1:56
This is very thick, it's very viscous, and that's probably due to the older whiskey in here
2:01
But it completely coats the mouth, and I'm enjoying that quite a bit because these flavors are right up my alley
2:06
Again it doesn hit me up front with the oak that comes a bit later on it towards the finish but it still hitting me with a nice creaminess with that mouthfeel Still nutty and still fruity not necessarily cherry as much as I was getting on the nose It more of just a very nice warming baked good kind of note
2:24
And the age definitely shows itself with that finish. The oak is there
2:27
It's not overwhelming. Again, I thought with something being so old, there's going to be a lot more oak
2:31
It's actually balanced really nicely with the sweetness, the fruitiness, the nuttiness
2:35
at the front of the palate. It gives it a nice, well-rounded experience. especially with the finish because that's usually what I like the oak to linger a bit. Some older
2:42
releases like from Knob Creek I enjoy that the most about it. This gives me those vibes that
2:47
really rich dark dark very old saturated oak but thankfully up front it's definitely sweet and got
2:54
that spice so it's definitely balanced and well-rounded um all together. Finish wise for 100
2:58
proof this actually is really long. I definitely would have guessed that this is higher proof if I
3:03
hadn't known that it was 100. I think it gives you the experience of a cast strength whiskey
3:08
but at that lower proof. And usually that happens when you have an older release
3:11
because the older a whiskey is, the chances are the natural castor is probably gonna come down a bit especially with Kentucky bourbon or in this case Indiana bourbon So I think this 100 proof isn a negative sign at all I think this is actually maybe it even benefits this whiskey
3:25
although I always like to try thinking of cast strength, but at 100 proof, it actually is really
3:30
really solid. So now the question is, is Remus Repeal Reserve Series 5 worth the buy at the $90
3:36
price point? For me, this is an absolute winner. Dare I say one of the best whiskeys I've purchased
3:42
this year. Some really interesting and complex flavors that only come through with older stock
3:46
A lot of brands aren't releasing that anymore like they used to. So this is a nice, nice little
3:51
you know, supplement for lacking some older stock from other distilleries because this
3:54
this is just fantastic. I'm actually super surprised to see this in Southern California
3:59
It's actually the first Remus product I've seen out here. So let me know if, is this more available
4:03
in your area this year than previous years or is it just us? So thank you all so much for watching
