Stop the Shame Spiral | Deepak Kashyap x Bonobology
Jun 3, 2023
Shame is a slippery slope. It is easy to get caught in its vicious cycle without being aware of it. It can start off with you doing something you regret and spiral into you feeling unworthy of friends and family and isolating yourself. This in turn will make you feel worse about yourself and the cycle will continue. If you don’t actively try to bring yourself out of this pit of shame, you might end up living there forever. Deepak Kashyap, a renowned psychologist, shares some tips on how to get out of this shame spiral.
Making a mistake or doing something you regret does not make you a bad person. One action should not define who you are. The first step of getting out of a shame spiral is understanding the distinction between doing something bad and being bad. An action is simply something you do, not who you are. Often, you can be your own harshest critic and so, once you understand this, you can start to forgive yourself.
If you are struggling with feelings of insecurity and unworthiness, you can seek help from a counselor. Check them out here: https://www.bonobology.com/online-love-and-relationship-counseling/
