Today I'm going to show you what could be the best microphone to get started on YouTube
0:04
That microphone is this, the Movo VXR10. So the reason I think it's important to invest in a microphone when you're getting started
0:10
on YouTube is the audio is by far the most important factor for people sticking around
0:14
and watching your videos. You could have bad lighting, not a great camera, and it's not that bad, but if the audio is
0:20
bad people aren't going to want to continue listening to your video
0:24
Your phone audio can be okay if your phone is like right in your face, but as it gets
0:28
further away it just picks up all the sound around it because it's not a directional microphone
0:33
Something like this shotgun mic is going to pick up what's directly in front of it and reject what's going on, the sounds around it
0:39
So it'll pick up your voice much better than having no microphone
0:44
The thing is too, compared to say a lab mic, is you don't have these cables kind of running
0:48
through your shirt and connecting to your phone. So I prefer using something like this instead of a lab mic
0:54
And so what we're going to do now is I'm going to switch over to using this connected to my Sony camera
0:59
Then I'm going to compare this microphone to a $20 Movo lab mic, and then just my iPhone
1:06
by itself with no external microphone, both here at my desk and outside
1:10
And then we'll come back and talk about some of the differences. So with that said, let's hook up the Movo mic
1:14
Okay, so here we are with the Movo shotgun mic. How does the audio sound right now
1:18
How would you compare that to the audio you just heard a second ago with the Rode VideoMic NTG
1:23
This microphone is six times more expensive than this microphone. $40, $250
1:28
Is this one worth that much more than this? The audio is actually pretty good coming from this microphone, right
1:33
So what we'll do now is I'll get on my iPhone and we'll hear the audio with this microphone
1:36
a $20 lab mic from Movo, and just the audio being recorded directly on my iPhone
1:41
Okay, so here we are now on my iPhone. It's a little bit further away
1:46
The Movo shotgun mic is mounted directly above it. How does my voice sound right now
1:51
How clear is it? Testing, one, two, three, four. Now let's see what the lab mic sounds like
2:10
All right, so now we are recording on my iPhone with the lab mic
2:16
What do you think? How does the audio sound with this microphone? Obviously this microphone is closer to my mouth than the phone was and the shotgun mic
2:24
mounted on top of it. The one thing with lab mics is this
2:29
So I don't know. I'm not great at keeping all the cables organized. I feel like I'm going to trip over it, pull on it, something like that
2:36
So lab mics are not my favorite, but obviously having a microphone really close to your mouth
2:40
the audio generally tends to be pretty good. This lab mic costs $20, so a small investment in a lab mic like this is a good investment
2:48
to improve your audio. Just don't rip out the cord from your phone or trip over it or something like that
2:59
Okay, so here is the iPhone recording all by itself, no external microphone
3:03
How does the audio sound right now? So the phone is a little bit further away than arm's length
3:08
The thing is the microphone, or there are several microphones actually on an iPhone
3:11
and they're not directional like a shotgun mic is. So it's probably picking up sound all the way around the phone as opposed to something
3:17
pointed directly at me. But I don't know. What do you think
3:21
How does this audio sound compared to the two previous options? Okay, so here we are outside right now
3:26
My phone is arm's length away. I'm using the Movo VXR10. How is the audio right now
3:33
How does my voice sound? Can you hear anything else outside at the moment
3:38
We're going to compare this to both the Movo lab mic as well as just the internal mic on
3:44
my iPhone. Okay, so here we are outside right now with the Movo lab mic
3:52
How does this sound compared to the shotgun mic? Normally when I'm recording the shotgun mic or when we listen to my iPhone, it's essentially
4:00
arm's length away where this is obviously a little bit closer to my mouth
4:04
So it should be picking up fairly clear audio. But obviously I have this huge cable running down from my phone into my pocket up through
4:12
my shirt. I'm not the hugest fan of lab mics, but hopefully the audio is pretty good right now
4:19
Testing 1, 2, 3, 4. Okay, so here I'm recording outside with my iPhone held out at arm's length
4:26
This is just the internal microphone right now. So how does this sound compared to the Movo shotgun mic
4:32
Does my voice sound as clear as it did just a second ago? Can you hear more of the background noise
4:38
Obviously this isn't going to be quite as directional and picking up just the audio
4:43
from my voice is probably picking up more around me or maybe I'm wrong
4:47
What do you think? So testing 1, 2, 3, 4. Okay, so what'd you think about the audio from the Movo VXR10
4:53
