Nitrogenase in biology
Jun 5, 2024
Before we dive into the world of nitrogenase, let's take a moment to appreciate the importance of nitrogen in our ecosystem. Nitrogen is an essential element for all living organisms, serving as a building block for proteins, nucleic acids, and other vital molecules. However, the atmospheric nitrogen (N2) that makes up around 78% of our air is largely inaccessible to most organisms. This is where nitrogenase comes into play, enabling the conversion of atmospheric nitrogen into biologically useful forms in a process called nitrogen fixation.
