0:07
Reading from the book of Genesis. In
0:10
those days, all Egypt began to be
0:12
hungry. And the people cried out to
0:14
Pharaoh for food. He replied, "Go to
0:17
Joseph and do whatever he tells you."
0:20
When the famine spread throughout the
0:21
land, Joseph opened the storehouses and
0:24
sold grain to the Egyptians. because the
0:26
famine was severe in them. People from
0:29
all over the country came to Egypt to
0:31
buy food because the famine was severe
0:33
throughout the land. The Israelites went
0:36
into the land of Egypt with others who
0:38
were also buying grain because there was
0:40
a famine in Canaan. Joseph was governor
0:43
in the land of Egypt. And grain was sold
0:45
to the people according to his will.
0:48
When Joseph's brothers came and fell
0:50
face down before him, Joseph recognized
0:52
them and put them in prison for 3 days.
0:55
On the third day, he said to them, "Do
0:57
what I have told you, and you will live,
1:00
for I fear God. If you are sincere, let
1:03
one of your brothers remain in prison
1:05
here, and you go and take the grain you
1:07
have bought to your homes." But bring
1:09
your youngest brother to me so that I
1:11
may prove the truth of your words, and
1:13
you will not die." They did as Joseph
1:16
had told them. And they said to one
1:18
another, "We have suffered this because
1:20
we sinned against our brother. We saw
1:23
his distress when he cried out to us for
1:25
mercy and we did not listen. That is why
1:28
this trouble has come upon us. Reuben
1:31
said to them, "Did I not warn you? Do
1:34
not sin against the boy, and you did not
1:37
listen. And now you are demanding an
1:39
account of his blood from us." Now they
1:42
did not know that Joseph understood
1:44
them, for he spoke to them through an
1:46
interpreter. Then Joseph went away from
1:48
them and wept. The word of the Lord.
2:01
Proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus
2:04
Christ according to St. Matthew. Glory
2:06
to you, Lord. At that time, Jesus called
2:10
the 12 disciples and gave them authority
2:12
to drive out evil spirits and to cure
2:14
every disease and every illness. These
2:17
are the names of the twel apostles.
2:19
First, Simon called Peter and Andrew his
2:22
brother. James the son of Zebedee and
2:24
John his brother, Philip and
2:26
Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew the tax
2:29
collector, James the son of Alfus and
2:31
Thaddius, Simon the Zealot, and Judas
2:34
Ice Scariot who betrayed Jesus. Jesus
2:37
sent these 12 with the following
2:39
instructions. Do not go to the Gentiles,
2:42
nor enter any town of the Samaritans. Go
2:45
instead to the lost sheep of the house
2:47
of Israel. As you go, proclaim, "The
2:51
kingdom of heaven is near." The word of
2:53
the Savior. Glory to you, Lord.
3:05
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
3:07
imagine yourself lost in a sandstorm in
3:10
the desert. The wind howls. The dark
3:13
sand completely obscures your vision.
3:15
And you feel like you are walking in
3:17
circles. Suddenly, through the storm,
3:20
you glimpse a distant light, an oasis, a
3:23
city, a refuge. This light is not just
3:27
hope. It is salvation. Today, through
3:30
the story of Joseph and the calling of
3:32
the apostles, we discover how God calls
3:35
us to be that light in the midst of
3:36
life's storms. In the first reading, we
3:39
find Joseph, the son of Jacob, in an
3:42
extraordinary position. Sold into
3:45
slavery by his own brothers. He now
3:47
rules over all Egypt, controlling the
3:50
granaries that will feed not just one
3:52
nation, but the known world. The whole
3:54
earth came to buy grain from Joseph
3:56
because the famine was severe throughout
3:58
the land. What a dramatic turn of
4:01
events. The young man who was thrown
4:04
into a sistern by his jealous brothers
4:06
has now become the savior of the
4:07
nations. But Joseph is not just a
4:10
historical figure. He is a type, a
4:13
prefiguration of Christ. Just as Joseph
4:16
was rejected by his own and became the
4:18
savior of the Gentiles, so Jesus was
4:21
rejected by his own and became the
4:22
savior of the world. The famine that
4:25
plagues the earth is not just physical.
4:27
It is a powerful image of the spiritual
4:29
hunger that consumes humanity. In every
4:32
generation, in every heart, there is a
4:35
deep hunger that only God can satisfy.
4:38
And it is through human instruments like
4:40
Joseph, like the apostles, like each of
4:42
us that God chooses to feed that hunger.
4:45
Note the divine irony. Joseph's brothers
4:48
who tried to destroy him now come to him
4:51
seeking salvation. They do not recognize
4:54
him. How is it possible that this dreamy
4:56
boy they sold into slavery is now the
4:59
powerful ruler of Egypt? But Joseph
5:01
recognizes them immediately. Joseph
5:04
recognized his brothers, but did not
5:07
make himself known. What a moving
5:09
moment. Imagine the conflicting feelings
5:12
that must have flooded Joseph's heart.
5:14
The pain of betrayal, the joy of
5:17
reunion, the temptation for revenge, the
5:20
urge to forgive. All of this
5:21
concentrated in a single moment. But
5:24
Joseph does not act on impulse. He puts
5:27
them in prison for 3 days. Not out of
5:30
cruelty, but out of wisdom. Sometimes
5:33
God allows us to go through times of
5:35
trial, not to punish us, but to prepare
5:37
us for the blessing that is to come.
5:40
Those three days in prison were for
5:41
Joseph's brothers a time of reflection,
5:44
of repentance, of preparation for what
5:47
was to come. And then on the third day,
5:49
a significant number in scripture,
5:51
Joseph speaks to them, "Do this and you
5:54
will live for I fear God." What a
5:57
powerful statement. Joseph does not use
6:00
his power for revenge, but for
6:02
restoration. His authority is grounded
6:05
not in human pride, but in the fear of
6:08
God. This is where we see the deep
6:10
connection with the gospel. Jesus calls
6:13
the 12 and gives them authority over
6:15
unclean spirits and to heal all manner
6:17
of diseases. This authority is not to
6:20
dominate but to serve. It is not to
6:23
exalt oneself but to set others free. Go
6:27
to the lost sheep of the house of
6:28
Israel. Jesus instructs them. Preach
6:32
saying the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
6:35
What an extraordinary mission. Just as
6:38
Joseph was sent to feed the world with
6:40
physical wheat, the apostles are sent to
6:42
feed the world with the bread of
6:44
spiritual life. But let us note
6:46
something important. Jesus does not send
6:49
them everywhere at once. He sends them
6:51
specifically to the lost sheep of the
6:55
There is a divine order, a heavenly
6:58
strategy. God has a specific plan for
7:01
each person, each family, each
7:04
community. My dear brothers and sisters,
7:07
today we are invited to view our own
7:09
lives through this lens of divine
7:11
purpose. Just as Joseph could not have
7:13
imagined that his sale into slavery
7:15
would lead him to a position where he
7:16
could save nations, we too cannot always
7:19
see how God is working through our
7:21
circumstances. How often do we
7:23
misinterpret the difficulties in our
7:25
lives? How often do we see only the pit,
7:28
the captivity, the prison, and lose
7:31
sight of the greater purpose God has for
7:33
us? The story of Joseph reminds us that
7:36
God can use even betrayal and injustice
7:38
to accomplish his redemptive purposes.
7:41
Perhaps today you feel like Joseph in
7:43
prison, facing circumstances that seem
7:45
unjust or incomprehensible.
7:48
Remember, God wastes nothing. Every
7:51
experience, every pain, every challenge
7:54
can be used by God to prepare us for a
7:57
greater purpose. Or perhaps you feel
7:59
like Joseph's brothers, carrying the
8:01
weight of guilt for past wrong choices.
8:04
The message today is clear. It is never
8:07
too late to turn back. God knows our
8:10
hearts better than we know ourselves.
8:12
And his mercy is greater than our guilt.
8:15
And we are all called to be like the
8:16
apostles, sent with divine authority to
8:19
proclaim that the kingdom of heaven is
8:21
at hand. This is not a mission for
8:23
clergy or especially holy people. It is
8:26
a calling for every baptized person, for
8:29
every person who has experienced the
8:31
transforming love of Christ. Notice that
8:34
Jesus not only gives authority to the
8:36
apostles, he also defines their message.
8:39
The kingdom of heaven is at hand. This
8:42
is not just a statement about the
8:43
future. It is a proclamation about the
8:46
present reality. Wherever we go,
8:48
wherever we are, we can manifest the
8:51
kingdom of God through our actions, our
8:53
words, our very presence. When we
8:56
comfort the afflicted, we are
8:57
demonstrating that the kingdom is at
8:59
hand. When we forgive an offense, we are
9:02
proclaiming that the kingdom is at hand.
9:05
When we feed the hungry, visit the sick,
9:08
welcome a stranger, we are making the
9:10
kingdom a tangible reality. Just as
9:13
Joseph fed the world with wheat during
9:14
the physical famine. So, we are called
9:16
to feed our world with love, hope, and
9:19
truth during the spiritual famine of our
9:21
time. our family, our friends, our
9:24
colleagues, our community, all of the
9:27
lost sheep to whom we are sent. But
9:30
remember this authority we have received
9:32
is not our own. It is delegated by
9:35
Christ and it must be exercised with the
9:38
same spirit as Joseph. I fear God. Our
9:42
authority as Christians must always be
9:44
grounded in humility, service, and love.
9:47
Today my dear brothers and sisters, you
9:51
are sent. You leave here not just as
9:53
people who have heard a message but as
9:55
messengers not just as people who have
9:58
been blessed but as channels of
10:00
blessing. Not just as people who have
10:02
received love but as instruments of
10:05
God's love. In your work be Joseph using
10:09
your position not for personal gain but
10:11
to serve and save. In your family, be
10:15
the apostles, proclaiming with life and
10:17
word that the kingdom of heaven is at
10:19
hand. In your community, be the light in
10:22
the storm, offering hope and direction
10:24
to those who are lost. And always
10:27
remember, just as Joseph was prepared
10:29
through his trials to save many lives.
10:32
So God is preparing each of you through
10:34
your experiences to fulfill his purposes
10:36
in your generation. May we, like Joseph,
10:39
use our authority with wisdom and godly
10:42
fear. May we like the apostles boldly
10:46
proclaim that the kingdom of heaven is
10:47
at hand. And may we be instruments of
10:50
salvation in a world hungry for hope and
10:52
love. May the Lord bless you and keep
10:55
you. May he make his face shine upon you
10:58
and grant you peace today, tomorrow, and
11:12
St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in
11:15
battle. Be our protection against the
11:17
wickedness and snares of the devil. May
11:20
God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do
11:23
thou, O prince of the heavenly host by
11:26
the power of God, cast into hell Satan
11:30
and all the evil spirits who prowl
11:32
throughout the world seeking the ruin of
