Stock Market Today: Dow Futures Rise, S&P 500 Falls As Trump Says Iran Wants To Negotiate
Jul 16, 2026
U.S. stock futures were mixed on Thursday, as the Dow Jones index rose while the Nasdaq 100 and S&P 500 indices fell, following Wednesday's higher close.
The domestic retail sales growth cooled to a modest 0.2% in June, and regional manufacturing performance staged an aggressive rebound as the July Philadelphia Fed Business Outlook Survey surged 31 points to a nearly five-year high of 41.4.
Compounding the positive momentum, labor market pressures eased unexpectedly, with weekly initial jobless claims dropping by 8,000 to a seasonally adjusted 208,000.
Meanwhile, the 10-year Treasury bond yielded 4.57%, and the two-year bond was at 4.15%. The CME Group’s FedWatch tool’s projections show markets pricing an 89.8% likelihood of the Federal Reserve leaving the current interest rates unchanged during July’s meeting.
The SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:SPY) and Invesco QQQ Trust ETF (NASDAQ:QQQ), which track the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100, respectively, were lower in premarket on Thursday. The SPY was down 0.061% at $754.35, while the QQQ declined by 0.29% to $715.68.
