Why America's $4.3B Megacities Project Failed
Why America Tried Building 13 Megacities And Failed The history of planning in America is fascinating, like the transition from urban grid designs to sprawling suburbs, which is well documented. Theres the current movement toward new urban tactics, and the ideas that may be used in the future. I love to look back at the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, with suburbanization and freeways taking center stage. At this time, governments and developers were trying to find city identities that could provide high-quality living conditions for the middle and upper class, and from this came one of the most interesting ideas in urban planning history, master-planned communities. These cities or neighborhoods were designed from scratch, and in nearly every case either ended up as total failures, or just really weird. One case of this came from the government, where the government founded 13 different communities to combat the housing crisis, and all but one of them saw a slow, sad decline. So today I’m going to tell you where they are, because they might be places youve heard of, and then ill tell you why nearly all of them failed.
