Many of these came with steady upgrades and small projects to keep up with increased traffic volume, but after this happens for 15 to 20 years, suddenly you have some of the widest freeways in the nation, with upwards of 20 lanes in some cases. The effectiveness of this style of freeway is debated, but especially in areas around the Sun Belt, there are many wide interstates and freeways seen from the suburbs to the downtown. Present day, there has been one freeway known as the widest in the country for over a decade now, but this may be changing. So today I wanted to explore our current widest freeway, which is the infamous Katy Freeway in Texas, but I mostly want to talk about a new project that may take its place.
