The first biggest red flag for your beard is if it is dry and brittle

Now this one is one that always concerns me, particularly because I live in a hot and dry environment in Australia

And it's easy to resolve, but it's hard to kind of find when your beard is dry

Because it's kind of happens slowly. Over time, it's not like one day you wake up and your beard's like all of a sudden super dry and brittle

It just happens slowly. The moisture is whipped out from the depths of their hair

you really need to ask yourself, why is it drying out? Why is it being super dry and brittle

So for me, I know that if I spend a lot of time in the ocean and outside

that evening I need to make sure that I do a super deep hydration treatment of my beard

using a good quality beard product such as a beard butter or a beard balm

or something that just kind of is a leave-in conditioner. I use blue beards, beard saver quite often for that purpose

And that is because it's like a moose that sits in my beard and it just gives me a really deep hydration treatment

And so the first red flag you should watch for is if your beard is dry because that leads to brittleness

Brittleness is absolutely horrible. I've got had a sort of like a couple of times where beard hairs have become very easy to snap off

One thing I've noticed is that the beard hair is fine until a certain point and then there's this little knot and it carries on

And at that knot, it's brittle, and it's easy to snap off and pull

So the hair has an outside kind of layer like cuticle cells, and if they get damaged

it's easy then to damage the inside hairs and dry that out

So be careful if your bead is becoming dry because it seems to accelerate quite quickly

due to the damage of those cuticle cells, and then it can dry from deep inside the hair structure

stages of growing a beard is quite normal. It becomes a red flag when your beard is a little

bit longer. You've got past that growing itchy stage, but now it's itchy underneath. And that

means you are not getting your products or your beard treatment close enough to the roots and the skin

of your beard. Now, it could be dermatitis or something that needs to be treated medically. Go check

out that with your health professional if you think it's that or you've suffered from that on other

parts of your body. But quite often, I find just using the fingertips to kind of apply the product

deep into the skin and make sure that I actually touch the skin with my fingertips, with the products

on it, can alleviate some of those itchy beard problems. Now, itchy beards are uncomfortable

and it can be the one thing that makes you think, I am going to cut off my beard. No, stop, wait

Make sure you use a skin product or a beard product high in hajoba oil, which is kind of like

the closest to natural sebum that we have. The problem is hajoba oil isn't well absorbed by

the hair on the face, but it is very well absorbed by your skin. So if you're finding itchy skin

choose a product with hajoba oil in it and make sure you massage it deep into the skin and solve

that itchy skin problem. The next biggest red flag is beard smell. Gross. Now the problem is

this is quite embarrassing because you don't notice your beard smells until someone else tells you

or if you have started to notice your beard smells it means other people have noticed way before you

Beards can smell like onions, cheese, vomit, horrible stuff because bacteria loves to

grow in the warm, damp spot right at the base of the beard. And also, environmental smells

where you're working or playing or whatever or where you're sort of spending time can end up

deep inside the beard. For example, you know, like when you're at a campfire and your beard

smells like smoke for ages, the same thing can happen if you're in a stinky environment

So deep cleansing making sure that you use products actually smell nice if you want to cover up sort of like low level smells But if your beer continues to smell for a long period of time go check out my other video where I talk about beard smells because it can smell like some gross things

and it could be a bacterial or fungal infection causing that, and that is disgusting

Now the thing is, is there are a ton of different products on the market at the moment for your beard

for beard care in general, and it can be confusing about which one to use

Now, I've suffered this in the past where I'm like, this is not working

This is not making my beard how I want it to sort of like sit, or it's not styling my beard properly

And that was because I was using the wrong product. Now, beard products have a range of different sort of like promises on them

But really, each product only does one or two things if you want to hide

and condition your beard, make sure you're using something that actually absorbs into the skin

That is one of the biggest problems that if you want to condition your beard

getting stuff that absorbs well into the hair is probably something that we overlook

We go, yeah, it's a beard product, great, it will be fine for beers, but not all beard products and all beard ingredients are created equal

So if you're solving that problem, choose a product that has those ingredients

If you want to hold your beard style, choose a product with wax or a natural hold component

or something to actually hold your beard for a long time throughout the day

If you want to deep hydrate your beard, choose something that sits against your beard in a beard wrap

you know, for a long period of time, and that's how you get these beard problems solved

And I kind of like figured this out early on because I was using beard oil as a one stop

kind of like solve the problems of my beard, and that really didn't kind of help

It's because I'm a little bit tight. I don't want to spend all this money on beard stuff that I just

used to think was like just a fad. Yes, there are some fads, but most of the time you do need

beard oil, you need beard products that condition, you need beard products for hold, and then

you need your like, oh shit, there's something seriously wrong with my beard in terms of dryness

I need this product on there and I need to leave it in there for a while So if none of your beard products are working make sure you actually choosing the right product for the right problem and I sure that problem will go away very quickly

The last red flag for your beard is if your beard hair is falling out a lot. Now in my other

the most damaging because the twisting is like perfectly translated to the root of the hair

You twist the root, boom, it comes out easily. Bending and sort of like acute pressure on different parts of your beard can cause beard hair

Problem so if your beard hair is falling out if all of a sudden you realize that it's falling out a lot

You know it could be a hormonal thing it could be that you've done something to your diet recently

It could be the symptom of a bigger underlying problem So go check out with your health professional if you think that's the issue

But it could be that you've just changed your pillow or that you've changed your comb that happened to me recently I changed to a new

comb with slightly narrower teeth and I was brushing it. I was like, oh my god, there's so much stuff

And so I actually decided not to use that comb anymore because it was clearly not suitable for my

beard, but it may be good for everyone else. I sort of like lose anywhere between sort of like

20 and 30 beard hairs a day. Find them in my bed. I see them in the shower when I'm brushing my

beard. They fall out when I'm sat on my computer after editing these videos. I'll notice that

their beard hairs around and you know, it's just a natural part of having a beard. And, um, and

And if you're noticing that it increases a lot or that clumps are falling out or that your hair is pulling out particularly easily

it could indicate an underlying problem with your beard. And yeah, you need to get that sorted
